  1. I'm applying to US PhD programs but I'm just curious about my backup options if applications don't work out the greatest for me on my first cycle. The PhD would obviously be in Political Science but I know MAs work a bit differently so whatever type works best to translate to a PhD later if I have to- probably an MPP or MAIR? Had never really considered European ones but now I'm curious.
  2. Are European Masters typically funded? And what are the benefits of going there vs in the US, desire to go to Europe aside? Any examples of the big/prominent schools there?
  3. Do any/most/all PhD programs allow you to change concentration/major (i.e. Comparative Politics, IR, etc.) once enrolled? I know they expect your research interests to probably change but what about the major to which you applied? Also, is there any risk job market-wise in choosing Public Policy as a major at the schools that offer it knowing that it is not one of the recognized subfields and not really invested in at some universities? Like after you graduate, would you be considered equal to say a comparative politics grad in terms of versatility on the job market? Any other insight strategically on the differences between subfields?
  4. Hi all, What advice do you have for searching through PhD program websites with regards to finding potential faculty to work with? How specifically do your research interests need to align with theirs? And what level of professor (assistant, associate, etc.) should you be looking for? Any advice on reaching out to them prior to applying? Also, what effect would having defined but pretty varied research interests have on an application and a department's perception of your "fit"? For example, public policy and African development.
