  1. I'm a recent graduate (May 2020) and am applying for an ETA to Kyrgyzstan. I'm not sure how this round is going to look with the previous two cohorts being granted the ability to compete without penalty, so I'm prepared to reapply again next cycle if need be! My qualifications are: Gilman - Kyrgyzstan (ten weeks, 2018) CLS - I received one this year for Russian. The actual travel/in-person stuff was cancelled, but we're finishing up the virtual program this week. Tutoring experience with ESL learners of Russian-speaking backgrounds Dean's list 5x, presented two research projects in May Volunteer experience, held two leadership positions in my sorority Currently working with the International Rescue Committee as an Americorps member I'm mostly concerned about my lack of formal teaching experience, and the fact that education isn't the field I hope to go into. It's definitely been a bit challenging to spin ETA to suit my professional goals (entering Foreign Service), but I think we're getting there, albeit slowly.
  2. I go to a large public university. First honors student in my family (and the third to receive anything more than a GED), had my research conferences either moved to an online platform or canned altogether, was essentially displaced/kicked out of my sorority house, and a scholarship I was awarded was cancelled rather than deferred, so it's definitely been a difficult semester to end things on. Finances prevented me from applying to graduate school straight out of undergrad this year, and I was wondering what the aid situation would look like in the coming years. I'm pretty glad I found this thread-- it's confirmed basically what I thought would happen with the whole Corona crisis. Guess I'll focus on studying for the GRE (whenever that'll be held) and getting some work experience for the next few years!
  3. Well, as of this morning, CLS 2020 is cancelled due to COVID-19. Finalists and alternates for this year are only allowed a chance to reapply next cycle, rather than guaranteed a spot. As a finalist, I'm pretty upset, to put it mildly. It was my second year applying, and next year will be my third, but I guess that's just the way the dice rolls. Good luck to everyone should they choose to reapply, or with whatever endeavors they're pursuing instead.
  4. That's what I've heard as well. The idea is that they narrow down from ~5000 applicants to ~1000 semifinalists and from those semifinalists, they have 500 finalists. I think that (ideally) leaves 250 alternates and 250 nonrecipients? I'm not quite sure how they decide alternate status
