Based on my experience, I feel like it's harder to get into the fully-funded university programs... I got into two top-tiers, but no fully-funded universities yet.

I get this. I was accepted to SAIC & Cranbrook which are reputed to be the top schools in my interest area, BUT they would both put me massively into debt and this is even WITH scholarships / grant money. I was told I was a "top candidate" at the end of a state school interview, which really got my hopes up, but I was rejected as a "top alternate candidate." That was definitely a huge blow. I also feel a little ridiculous turning those schools down, because they're really good for fiber! But, like, my professor in undergraduate told me, "There's no point in going to graduate school, if you are going to be in so much debt afterward you can't make art." I'm waiting for one more school to post results, and if they accept me then I'll be able to afford graduate school. And if not... it sucks, but I'm going to reapply next year and in the meantime try and get a job that's connected to the arts. I'm moving back to the states after 5 years abroad, so this is a huge step and kind of terrifying lol. I have literally nothing in the states anymore. If I don't get in, it definitely feels like I'm putting my life on hold. I also don't know where I'm going with this. I just sympathize with what you're going through.

Ohhh, at Iowa state? Thought you were talking about university of Iowa and got a little worried that I hadn't hear anything, haha Thanks! Congrats on your acceptances!
-
What department for Iowa? When did you hear?
-
Agreed. If it continues into the fall, then something has really gone wrong and we'll have other things to worry about rather than school haha
-
I'm a teacher, and currently in Japan the schools have been flat out canceled, at least from elem - HS, universities seem to be cancelling all extracurricular activity as well as doing more work-from-home stuff. That's all fine and good for some departments, but art? Yikes. Maybe it'll be like a low-res for awhile...? Honestly, it's my hope that it'll clear up before then.

a worldwide pandemic was the only thing that managed to take my attention off the application process for a few days looool congrats on your acceptance!
-
Thank you! That's good to know.

Has anyone heard from Iowa? I've been really hoping for it. Also, has anyone received rejections from VCU craft & material studies yet? I'm just waiting for mine so I can have a bit of closure lol
-
If I was in your position, I would try calling them instead of email. Seems bizarre that you would schedule an interview and then be rejected without having one.
-
I received my first packet in the mail last night and yeah, like you said, I didn't get another envelope either. (It was a yellow envelope too, so...) However, I was told that I'd be receiving one (TA position), so I think it takes a bit longer to put together the financial information. My email said this: A formal letter outlining all of the details of your admission will be quickly forthcoming, including info on Financial Aid. These will come in separate envelopes. My assumption is that it's just not here yet, but you could always ask your admissions counselor?

"I interviewed with VCU material studies back in January and they placed me on the waitlist shortly after." "I interviewed with VCU Craft and Material studies about two weeks ago." @Nonameguy101 @HydroHydra Thanks for the info! Looks like that's a rejection for me from them then as I haven't received any emails. (Did you receive emails, or is there some mysterious online portal I'm missing?) Oh well! You win some, you lose some! LOL
-
Thanks! It was fiber!
-
Yeah! I had the interview on the fifteenth!
-
Thank you!! Apparently they hold a few TA positions open for incoming first years, but generally they’re by competitive application in the second year. I was pleasantly surprised, but it might help that I have five years of assistant teaching abroad, though admittedly in a different subject. I haven’t seen the rest of the financial package yet, the TA position was offered in my acceptance email!

Accepted to SAIC this morning via email because I'm abroad! If anyone is waiting on SAIC, you should be hearing soon! My list as of now: Cranbrook: interviewed, accepted w/ scholarship SAIC: interviewed, accepted with TA position University of Oregon: interviewed & waiting for results VCU: nothing yet Tyler: nothing yet, assuming rejection University of Iowa: nothing yet Has anyone heard from VCU for the craft & material studies area?

OMG seriously? adfasfasdfsafjljfasj that's hilarious??? There's definitely a trade-off, like, live in a small town? But have a decent standard of living. Vs paying absolutely ridiculous amounts of rent. My part of Hokkaido is incredibly remote, so I'm also ready for a change. I'm trying to go for a happy medium and live in a small city.
-
"but i really can't afford toronto rent and would ideally not want to live with 10 roommates in a basement eating nothing but oatmeal for 2 years... lol..." This is a BIG MOOD, @janelane2, I relate so hard. This whole process has made me realize how unwilling I am to live like that.

Just received an email from University of Oregon for a fiber interview!
-
Thank you!!! In the end, it'll all come down to financials, but I'm hopeful because it's such a nice school! :')
-
Accepted to Cranbrook fiber this morning via email, so if anyone is lurking & interested, those are out. Official acceptance letter & financial package will be sent out later.
-
Fiber! But I think the discussing of work is pretty standard across all areas from what other people have said for SAIC.
-
So I've got my interview with SAIC this weekend, and I was told via email that we will talk about 2-3 of my best pieces & the conceptual / material framework, influences, and what I want from grad school. For any of y'all that know SAIC, do you know if we get to choose what we think are our 2-3 best pieces, or is it something they're going to choose? Because if I get to choose, we are good to go. (Also, if anyone was interested in the SAIC interview content, apparently this is it and it's only 20 minutes.)
-
I haven't either! But I'm fiber. I was worried that they'd make the decisions via the TUportal or whatever, but I don't have access to that. Glad to hear that they do emails. :')
-
I live abroad so I'm unable to visit, so first I got an email, and then I had a skype interview, so I'm afraid I can't help with that. However, it's a good sign that they want to talk to you, and that's what I was told during my interview. They don't talk to candidates they don't think would be a good fit for the program.
