  1. PhD or Thd?
  2. i think that i may have already said this in a pm or you may have seen it in the results search but i have a friend who got a call on monday night - she was admitted.
  3. That's cool good for you! Damn though didn't hear anything from Duke. Guess I know what that means. Wonder when they'll send out rejections.
  4. good for you congratulations!
  5. argh i'm out of the country and can hardly think about anything but the potential letters sitting on my table...
  6. i'm thinking/hoping this week...aaarrgghghhhgh please let it be this week.
  7. thanks! you know what i forgot to mention that i applied to their fellowship program and interviewing for it as well. i don't know if they're doing all the interviews right now or just the folks who are applying for phd and the fellowship? don't have to give up completely!
  8. congrats on the baylor interview. i didn't apply to baylor. i applied to duke and vandy as well. i got an invitation to interview at vandy for E&S next week. best of luck!
  9. i didn't mean to ask if duke gdr and div are the same, i meant to ask if the notifications are the same week. thought that was obvious. thanks.
  10. "Duke sends out first round of rejections the last week of January, and they invite for interviews the first week of February." Is that Duke, as in Duke GDR or Duke Div? Or is that the same? And do they send out the invites first week Feb or interview 1st week???
  11. Late poster but following these threads for a while, and reapplying after last year's round of disappointments. 1. Where are you definitely applying / not applying? Drew, Temple, Union, Garrett, Vanderbilt, Princeton Sem, UC-Berkeley, Duke Div 2. What discipline(s)? (Religion, Theology, PR) Practical Theology and Religion/Society 3. What did you learn from the last round? Needed a clearer, more concise SOP. Best of luck! I think we're approaching the home stretch...
  12. Not that I have a ton of experience or have gotten in anywhere...I do hear that it's best to be short and concise. I think it's easy to lose the reader's attention if it gets too long, and longer length kind of doesn't communicate focus. It's not necessary to put everything in there - just do what's most pertinent to your topic. Hope this makes sense and isn't too preachy.
  13. i check this forum pretty incessantly and facebook to see if any friends post any news about phd studies. work keeps me busy, too though, and i also like getting outdoors (though all the rain is washing away the snow out here), socializing, reading...though none of this really helps for those nights i am wide awake randomly at 4 am. keep on...
  14. this is tremendously helpful! i'm planning on taking french and german at a nearby state university next fall - just the first level...hoping that'll be a good jumpstart, and then have it on my transcripts. i think the self-study will be my way to go though in the spring. thanks for the recs on texts, i'll definitely look them up.
  15. Ok, so thinking some more about apps for next year. I'm wondering: How many PhD acceptees took German and/or French before applying to the programs? Is this a helpful thing to have on the application? I think some programs require you to have it before you matriculate, but I can't think of any that require it upon application. Thanks in advance for any advice!
  16. thanks retiredwaif, this is helpful.
  17. NRM Scholar - What program did you apply to at U of Colorado?
  18. thanks this is all REALLY helpful...and encouraging. i'm looking forward to getting into the work to make these apps hopefully a little better for next year. and luck to everyone this year - those still waiting to hear...and those who have been accepted and starting their programs in the fall.
  19. so i'm starting to think about apps for next year, and feel like i could spend some time on pretty much everything on the app to improve it [gre's, ps, and of course, ws]...but for those who've gotten into programs this year, could you provide some advice and insight on the writing sample? like...if i'm using a paper from a class that i got a decent grade on it, with some helpful comments, should i use the paper for the ws as is or try to polish it with the prof's comments, etc.? should i try to add more to the paper in general in terms of more research and other sources? i wonder how much time the admissions committee spends on reading the paper itself? thanks in advance for any future help. i applied to 5 schools this year, and just was idiotic about everything.
