  1. @feralgrad I am curious how you ended up! Do you think you will be doing an MFA next year?
  2. I live in a place where there are 0 writing jobs as well. I would venture to guess even less than Montana. My advice for you is....a year is not a long time. You are lucky to have rent paid for by parents. I def enjoyed that for many years. And the more experiences you get in life, whatever work you do, the more you'll have to write about. Save as much money as you can, work on your writing, and next year apply ONLY to fully funded programs. If the East Washington program means going into debt, I wouldn't do it, but I don't know about the program
  3. @feralgrad How are you? Since you are in an advice giving mood and I trust your judgment (and I 100% agree with his advice here @Jreanier. Unless you are EXTREMELY independently wealthy, AND certain the ONLY program you want to go to is the one that happens not to offer full funding for some reason, don't do it. It is even a bad idea to go to a program that offers a living stipend that is not so high. If you have to borrow more than 1-2k for your living and tuition expenses throughout the three years, don't do it). I for some reason can't get approved on draft... I am about to make my decision in the next two days (took my time like you suggested!) Do you know of a place that offers an appropriate decline note? Same for asking to be removed from a waitlist....
  4. thanks. by the way I am not too sure schools will open this fall
  5. I 100% agree with you. I love having some one to talk to about this. also I can't take a part time extra job because not a citizen, so not an option. I agree with you but I think for a degree like a cw mfa, 20k debt is too much. that is alot to pay for a degree that in all likelihood would not benefit your financial status one bit. with this corona crisis, we see just how easy it is for things to fall apart. I think 10k maybe is a acceptable risk....
  6. I like it a little better than the better funded program in terms of the fiction faculty, the opportunities, the international aspect, the city...I also didn't realise their 15k stipend is before they deduct about 3k for health insurance, so I didn't think it was a big deal that they were slightly less funded than the other programs and was so excited to follow my bliss regardless of program rank and funding...but now that I understand the stipend is really 12k (for 20 weekly work hours), and they have 0 additional funds one can hope to get by way of fellowships or scholarships or anything for later years, I guess I just need to process that and see if that is something I can feel comfortable doing regardless of my initial excitement....my heart is still leaning there but we'll see. I think I will take your advice and not feel too bad about taking a few weeks to decide. late April is really late...I hope you hear before then. if you are not fully funded or funded enough for your liking, will u still attend?
  7. yes, they fund everyone but I don't think the stipend is realistically live-able, at least not by any calculations I am doing, and you have to pay around 3k for health insurance each year ..No matter what the reality is and what I decide (I have other options), I want to make sure I do it with all the information in front of me, and despite googeling frantically, I am just not sure I can really tell if I will or will not go into debt and by how much, so it's just stressful. I will feel better once I commit to an answer either way I'm sure What's the situation like with GMU?
  8. so worried about funding...ahah
  9. CONGRATS! I am also confused.... would love to chat! Do you think you will be attending? I am kind of inlolve with this program, prefer it to even the "super prestigious" programs. The only downfall I see is the meh funding. But if I can feel confident I can attend without going into debt, I think I will accept. Just have to fully understand it and what it means....
  10. Admitted to UNLV (University of Nevada Las Vegas) for fiction last night (or 6 hours ago, so maybe today, depending on your time zone). Very kind email from the program director. There is a high likelihood I will accept the offer, pending full stipend/cost of living information. Very happy, of course. I am mostly a lurker here and on draft, but because I used this tool to better learn where I stand with a program I have yet to hear from, but that others have received acceptances from (thus assuming rejection...but whatever, I would have preferred other programs including UNLV...) It was particularly important for me to give back and update you all, since I haven't seen another UNLV fiction admission posted. Best of luck today if you are still waiting to hear from UNLV fiction--the email was personalised, so it is likely not all admissions have gone out. And if you are considering going/ have a special insight about this program/Las Vegas (I have never been!) let's chat.
