Agreed. I don't have a lot of hope that I'll get into either program, but the fact that they've started notifying is definitely shortening my attention span.

Just saw a Purdue phd acceptance on the results board... anyone want to claim it? Looked like the person received a fellowship, too, so the rest of us will probably still have to wait until late March or April for our acceptances/rejections/waitlist notifications. But congrats to whoever was just accepted!

Hi techcommie. I submitted the introduction + part of a chapter of my master's thesis, which was on Cape Verdean and Brazilian women's fiction and short poetry, and the intersections of identity, culture, race, gender, and movements towards independence within each nation. Obviously it was not technically within the field of rhetoric and composition, but it did tie in with what some of my research interests are (writing and identity, gender theory, etc) for my phd work. My undergrad was in English, my MA was in Gender and Cultural Studies, and I applied mostly to Rhet/Comp programs that would incorporate those things, along with my other interests. I would say just pick a solid piece of writing that demonstrates your ability to research, think critically, analyze whatever it is you're writing about, and write well, and perhaps has some connection to what you want to study in grad school. Hope that helps some. But definitely don't feel like your sample *must* be within the field of rhet/comp. Many rhet/comp applicants don't have backgrounds in rhet/comp, strictly speaking.

Mine too. Bummer. -
I'm waiting on UT-Austin too, and although it's definitely one of my top/dream schools, I don't have high hopes. Fingers crossed! And hopefully we'll find out next week!

woolfie, crae, and Disney, did you check the website on your own or did you get some sort of email notification telling you to check your status? As a sidenote, I have no idea what my login info is for the website, so I can't check it anyway! But I really really want to know now, and it's driving me crazy. I'll definitely be calling them later today. -

Also, right after I posted that I got an email from one of my programs stating, "attached please find important information regarding your application for admission." I almost had a heart attack, but it was just a letter informing me that my application has been forwarded to the department. Seriously, I'm shaking right now! Ugh. -

I'm in my second round of applications, and whenever I'm feeling particularly pessimistic my family and friends try to be supportive by saying, "you can always apply again next year." The very thought of going through this a third time is soul-crushing, but I'm happy to hear that you succeeded your third try, and that gives me some hope for myself. I applied to 15 programs last year and was rejected by all of them as well. This year I went all out and applied to 20. So far I've gotten 2 rejections back, and I'm trying to stay positive by saying to myself that I only need one acceptance. That's it; just one. But it's not an easy process, and I just don't know what I'll do if things go the way they did last year. That was pretty rough. Anyway, I feel for all of you, and you're not alone in this. That's one of the reasons I'm so glad I found GC; none of my friends or coworkers or family really understand how I'm feeling right now, but I know you guys do! Good luck to everybody. -

Just emailed Louisville to ask about the status of my application (I had been missing a recommendation and wanted to make sure it was received).... got this response: "Your application is complete and has been reviewed by the committee. Thanks." AAAAAAAAH of course I'm assuming rejection, but at least it's nice to know that hopefully I'll be hearing something soon? -

The department sent out an email about two weeks ago and said if we haven't heard from them by the 14th or if our online status hasn't changed by the 14th we should contact the department directly. The annoying part of the email was that the first three sentences or so almost made it sound like you were about to get rejected.... but then suddenly it was just a "don't call us, we'll call you" type thing. I've applied to the PhD in Composition & Rhetoric, so I'm waiting to hear about that. And I have an MA in Gender & Cultural Studies. -

Lost all 3 of my Letter of Recommendations
snappysorbet replied to durango1192's topic in Letters of Recommendation
This actually happened to me with one program I applied to this year. I only found out about it because I have been in touch with a professor in the department, and when I asked about the status of my application she said it was complete except for my letters of recommendation, and therefore they could not move forward with reviewing my app. I did the same thing that you did; the letters were mailed early, but separately. I called the Graduate Admission Office and the problem seemed to be that letters of recommendation are not considered "high priority" for the Grad Admissions Office, although they are for the department, so the Grad Office took their time about passing them along to the department. The young woman I spoke with didn't know if they had arrived or not, but told me that they probably had and just hadn't been processed yet because they are considered "low priority." In the end, the professor at this particular institution suggested that I have my recommenders email their letters to her directly. That seemed easy enough, and my recommenders were more than willing to take 5 minutes to send off an email to her. Anyway, I would suggest calling/emailing the Graduate Admissions Office directly, and also calling/emailing someone in the department, and simply explaining what's going on. People are usually fairly willing to help. Good luck, and let me know how this turns out for you. -
outofredink, I just wanted to tell you that I love your signature, specifically the university you're currently attending Also, I don't think you're the only one who can't stop checking the results page. I'm definitely in the same boat.
