  1. I would really suggest to follow the advice below and similar strategies. I completely agree. A lot of people focus on their CV (obviously this is a crucial part of your application) but perhaps spend less time on the small details of their application such as wording, grammar and structure. Most applicants are quite competitive if they've made it to national competition so the difference between your application and a colleague could be down to an eloquently written proposal. My old institution ran a tri-council writing seminar where they provided a lot of great writing tips for the proposal and contribution sections. Most of these tips are mentioned above. It would be worth while to inquire with your institution to see if they run similar sessions or if the office that collects NSERC applications can provide any tips/feedback etc. A mentor of mine suggested paying close attention to the optional documents you can provide: inclusion in research, explanation of delays, etc. Even if it may be obvious why your program was delayed because of COVID (as an example) its a bonus to include a blurb acknowledging these aspects and how you persevered despite this. As mentioned above, asking your references to highlight certain aspects of your research/volunteer/academic experience, your proposal or general attributes may go a long way to complimenting your application package. While they may be writing you a positive letter, you may take it for granted that your referees are being specific, which can emphasis some of these points (particularly if you've run out of space in the relevant sections). Unfortunately, application committees are made up of people who have biases (whether intentional or not) and when faced with a stack of excellent applications choices have to be made. Rejection from NSERC does not determine your worth or your value as a scientist - speaking from someone who was rejected on my first try. Good luck to everyone hoping to apply again!
  2. Just got the email for committee 187 for PGS-D award at foreign institution (Oxford)! Hopefully you all will receive yours soon. It's been a long day waiting for the results (currently 12:30am). This is my second time applying and I didn't rank the best the first time - don't give up hope! Best of luck ☺️
  3. I emailed them just before midnight on the 16th because I was in the 187 committee and was among the people that didn't get their results. They only got back to me yesterday asking if I had received my notification letter. So it seems they're fairly backed up.
  4. My results finally got posted. I had sort of given up with how long I was waiting for the results so I wasn't surprised that I wasn't successful. However, I was a little surprised to see how poorly I had done, although it was my first time applying. I agree that the feedback form is more or less useless. I plan to apply again next year, but with the 'feedback' given im a little unsure on how to improve. I just received a full ride scholarship thats fairly prestigious and only a given to one applicant so im sort of confused with the discrepancy here.
  5. I feel you, I got revisions back from my committee yesterday and I haven't been able to concentrate enough to even start working on them. I wish they would just send out an email or something to let us know whats going on.
  6. When did you receive your results? Just wondering because no one has posted about receiving anything since earlier last night. I'm wondering if this is a technical issue they're experiencing or just slower than expected processing times.
  7. I feel like i'm going through all the stages of grief waiting to hear back about this damn award. I was up until 2am last night waiting and hoping they would actually upload the results. I called and all the guy said was "they haven't released the results yet", you're talking to a bunch of people applying for PhD's, we're not stupid. I just want the rejection letter already so I can stop worrying about it, because god knows this can't mean good news. ?
