It would depend on the distirbution of applicants. I like the idea of 199 apps being distributed among the fours depts I'm not applying to, and mine being the only app in my dept. Unlikely, I know... I just want one acceptance, anywhere. The waiting is making me crazy!

Thesis writing: Instant Cure for Waiting Ailments.
ridgey replied to MDLee's topic in Waiting it Out
I know I should be writing - if I ever get an acceptance, I won't get to go unless my thesis is submitted. Thus far, this hasn't proven sufficient to motivate me to do any work... -
Yale's 5/200 is across the whole school of Public Health; I think there are 5 departments altogether. Last year a post on the results board said they didn't admit anyone in my department, Health Policy. It could be that each department admits a max of 1? Re: Columbia 1 in 4 - the department I applied to is far more competitive. When I spoke to someone mid last year (pre-economic collapse), I was told that department planned to take 7 this round, and they had had between 90 and 100 aplicants each year for the past 3 years. I was surprised by Michigan - their website suggests they take 10/50-60.

They offer a LOT of degrees though. Three versions of the MSc (or whatever notation Harvard uses) alone. Two other Masters degrees and two doctoral. That's just on the school's page; I looked at one department (Environmental Health, just randomly) and they offer different specialisations in the MSc. And there are what, 10 departments?

There have neen two: one Mental Health and one International Health. I assume each department at Bloomberg is making their decisions completely independently so this doesn't indicate when decisions in my dept wil be made. Still, it feels closer...

Anyone considering or choosing an online program?
ridgey replied to orangepotato's topic in Public Health Forum
Caveat: My experience is completely outside the US; there may be factors that are relevant to you that I have not even considered. I'm mid-MPH now, nearly finished and hoping to submit my thesis soon. I LOVED my coursework, and a huge part of that was my classmates. I got a lot out of the coursework itself, and I guess I could have doen the readings and assignments independently. I think, though, that doing that would have lost some of the richness of the experience. I think the nature of the public health, as compared to for example English, is that it draws a lot of people with incredible amounts of practical experience. When I did my coursework, I was one of two people straight out of undergrad, and I really valued the perspective of my more older classmates - so much so that I took a few years between coursework and thesis to gain some perspective myself. I guess what I'm saying is that having actual classmates is invaluable. There is certainly appeal in the convenience of online courses, but in my opinion, it's not worth it - you lose out on something, and even if that something's not a tangible learning objective, it's an integral part of the whole process. Having said that, maybe the hybrid course would be a good option, allowing you to get the best of both worlds? -
Congratulations to whoever got the JHU acceptance! Of course, now I'm going to be checking even more frequently than the every 7 minutes I've been doing so far...

Good luck for your interview! Even though my powers of deduction tell me your interview means I am rejected...

Ditto on the many hours/$$ submitting applications. Give up the rest of my twenties to minimal income and maximal stress. Basically, skipping the "independent adult with a real income but no responsibilities" phase of life. Though I suppose there's no law saying I have to be responsible in my thirties. More in the spirit of this thread: I would eat gross things (well, things that are gross to me) inlcuding avocado, cucumber, watermelon, strong olives. I would fast for a week (I'd be willing to go as long as it tok for a guaranteed admission; however the my willpower would definitely end run out at 1 week, if not earlier). I would work fulltime at the job I had and hated while I was in highschool. In fact, there probably isn't much I wouldn't do for a guaranteed, funded

The gradcafe has made Public Health its very own area, yay!
-
Now we can wait anxiously away from the rest of the world, who aren't sure whether public health means nursing or social work  Though I think the WHO definition of health makes it legitimate to consider anything, including any academic endeavour, as being in the domain of public health. Anyway. Has anyone else heard NOTHING yet? Convinced themselves they'll get in NOWHERE?
-
There were a few Health Policy interviews on the result boards, none for any other area that I recall. Nice to see another public health person here! I think they've given us our own wee dark corner of thee board all for ourselves, though last I checked it was locked...

They must consider your application quite strong to go to that trouble! Sounds positive...

Glad I'm not the only one! I haven't been doing it quite that often though - on average, it has probably been one SoP/2 weeks. For some schools, I've reread the SoP several times; for others, not at all. There have thankfully been times where I'm quite pleased with the statement. Whether that'll be enough to overcome what I consider are the weaknesses in my app remains to be seen!

Hey that wasn't me!!!!
-
Well, if that's your experience/reality and that of your friends, it MUST be true for everyone else in every circumstance. It's a nice saying "Theres [sic] always options" but in the real world that simply isn't true.

Yikes I don't have either of those. I got the "thanks for submitting your app" right after I submitted. I emailed to tell them when I changed address, and got a "we have updated at your request etc etc". The announcement on the website was pretty much "don't bug us, we'll let you know if anything's missing" - did you get a NYU ID?
-
If you take a squiz even on the results page here, you'll find it's not "easy" to get in at the places you mentioned. There isn't the several hundred applications of a handful of slots, but to even apply you have to be a "better" applicant in these places, in the sense that you have to have a polished thesis proposal.

I won't go unless I get funded. Even my top school (which, like all my applications, is taking its sweet time in getting back to me). that was my position even before reading these threads over at Chronicle: http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/t ... 080.0.html http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/t ... 288.0.html Not that I'm in the humanities, but I don't want to take debt of $35k/year in tuition alone for 5 years, as well as living costs. That is enough to buy a house. Onen big reason I'm applying in the US is because funding is usually - at least in my field - tied to admission. Elsewhere, you have to do twice as much work - you have to get admitted, and then you have to track down the $$. And, I've heard it said often that funding (at least at PhD level; it probably works differnetly at Masters level) shows how into you they are. If you're the one inyour incoming class who didn't receive funding, are you also going to be the oen who is less valued by faculty, gets less support and fewer opportunities, etc?

I've had a couple of dreams where I log into my applications/email and am excited to see a decision has finally been made. But in none of these dreams have I actually been accepted/rejected. Last night, I dreamed that I discovered three grad-cafe usernames were the same person, and it was all part of some conspiracy or something. They were after money and power, and had to ensure I didn't get admtted anywhere to achieve that. Only one of the user names is one I recognise here and I'd be very surprised if they were really plotting anything. I will be very glad when this is all over!

post here if one of your programs has started contacting...

Sorry, linguists, to interrupt your plotting of world domination, but I wanted to be the 100th post. Carry on! -
Seems to have been temporary. And the annoncement hasn't changed, still dated 5/1/09. I've been looking here http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/news/2007/8/2 ... app_update.
-
Exactly! Especially given the money and time in these applications.
-
I can't believe I'm gonna say this, being a kiwi, but the funding situation DEFINITELY is better in Australia. You're almost guaranteed not to have to pay tuition, and there's money floating around through the govt, eg NH&MRC. You also have the advantage of US$ going a LONG way in these parts at the moment.

I'm applying to a different Steinhardt programme. I obsessively check all my applications each day, including Steinhardt's "Application announcements/news" or whatever it's called. Today, following the same links as every other time, it asks me for a NYU netid. I don't have one, that I know of, but I wonder if this means they're loading decisions or other exciting information...
