  1. Well I was curious enough just to check the website, and there were no specifics given about undergraduate GPAs from what I saw.
  2. I see where you are coming from Eigen, but the department was well aware that there was a GPA cut-off and they were taking a big risk. I don't see why they couldn't have discussed Dean's application with the school dean just to get a head's up before taking it any further. It seems as though it was pretty black and white.
  3. I still believe it is unprofessional for the university to have sent out the unofficial acceptance in the first place and inform the candidate that a financial package is in the works. I would think that those on the committee would have a heart and not play with someone's emotions. Politics and job market aside.

Hey all, I wanted to know how expensive it is to live near campus? Also, how are the undegrads? Does the campus get rowdy on weekends? Similar to a couple people on this post, I do not own a car and am not sure if I would get one before the fall, which is why I might just want to live as close to campus as I can for a year or so.
  5. Also, how do you feel about the stipend? I do not know what the standard of living is in that area, but I assuming that since Tufts is near Boston, it must be expensive to live up there.
  6. Hi! I also got a call from Virginia Jackson around 4pm today! Exact package that you have but Virginia did talk about being some kind of "teaching apprentice" my first year given that I have a MA already. Congrats on your admittance!
  7. Great question. I wonder what people think a female should wear for an open house for humanities?
  8. This is just crazy to me. It makes no sense that they liked your application, yet wouldn't even attempt to write a letter. Was that out of laziness? Seems as though all they had to do was to come up with a couple letters on your behalf and there would have been no problem. This seems suspicious.
  9. Has Yale already contacted those they accepted/waitlisted? I am wondering if I should continue being hopeful.
  10. To those accepted to multiple schools, do you plan on visiting all of them before making a final decision or only visiting those you are absolutely sure are in the running?
  11. I am definitely keeping my rejection letter from Harvard....I really can't tell you why...I guess because its Harvard lol.
  12. Ah, I see. Well, that leaves about 12 spots right? I would hope that more than just 3 admittees would post their results. Still optimistic!
  13. I'm still only seeing one admit by the way? Are you sure 3 jpruf?
  14. You never know jprufrock, maybe Penn will break their tradition! I certainly hope so.
  15. I am 23 right now...but I will be a couple days from 24 when I start my PhD this fall. I have not taken a break from school but I am very confident I am doing what I am meant to do. Everyone is different.
  16. Is it safe to assume more calls will be made tomorrow? I know that not everyone records their schools on the grad cafe results page but there is only one Penn admit so far.Crossing my fingers!
  17. This is too much math for me! Hah. I think I am just going to go with my gut feeling as far as my school choice is concerned.
  18. I recently was notified by an ivy league school that I was waitlisted for their English Phd program, but they refused to tell me what position I was on the list. I honestly don't think, however, that anyone who got accepted into an ivy league school would ever give up their spot! Does anyone know of anyone who was waitlisted at an ivy league and actually got in? I definitely know that I would not wait to the last possible moment to hear from this school. I have heard of people passing up offers from schools in hopes of making it off of the waiting list of their dream school...but also being denied by the dream school at the end and left with no schools.
  19. I am very tempted not to work all summer...I don't know if that is smart though. But I rather just take a language course, travel to Europe and throughout the US, and spend time on a hobby. It is so easy to get burned out while doing graduate work, so I really do intend on taking it easy during the summer....it might be the only time I can!
  20. Ah, lovely quote squaressquared, recording it in my journal ASAP. Thanks.
  21. Haha, maybe its better not to be too close to nice beaches squaresquared, since you might not get your work done! I would be at the beach everyday lol. Thanks for giving the specifics as to why location is important to you. I didn't even really think about transportation, but I can see why that would be really important. Given that I will be at a school for 5-7 years, location should be important.
  22. To those with multiple offers, how important is the location of the school in making your decision? Anecdotes would be very helpful.
  23. You absolutely can get into a higher-ranked school. Graduate admissions is basically like a crap shoot...of course you can do your part to make your application outstanding, but there are other factors that come into play that are out of your control, such as fit. Therefore, a lower-ranked school might not accept you if they don't think you would be the best fit for the program. On the other hand, a higher-ranked school might think you are the best candidate fit-wise and accept you. This admissions process is very unpredictable...you never know what ANY school is looking for exactly.
  24. Just because someone's GPA or GRE is lower than yours doesn't make them less qualified for a PhD program. It is that type of attitude that you have to change to get accepted to a program. Relying on scores and grades alone is not going to get you far. Just my two cents.
