  1. Hi all! I'm looking for a 1 ba/1br apartment that is pet friendly (a small corgi) with parking. Ideally, I'd be able to walk/bike to campus. I'm okay with paying up to 2k/month for rent. I used to live in Charleston, South Carolina so I'm used to exorbitant rent lol. Where should I look? I have never been to Cville, though I am visiting in a few weeks and would love to have some recommendations on places to look for apts, eating, fun things to do, etc.
  2. YALL! I got into my dream program at UVA!!! I can’t believe I did it!!!! i got the email while I was at my nanny job and started crying and shaking. I told my child I was happy because I was going to be a teacher and she hugged me said “I hope you will be mine next year!” Cue more tears. I can’t believe this is real!!!
  3. I literally have been wondering the same thing...it seems as if for a lot of schools, PhDs come out before MAs. But for others, they don't. I've only heard back from two of the programs I've applied to so far.
  4. I feel like the anxious waiting is starting to get worse after seeing so many schools release results...I know this month is like "the" month and that by the end of March I'll either have happy tears or sad ones for sure.
  5. Hahaha!! I had a friend in high school who was a rodeo world champion. Some stereotypes are fitting I suppose.
  6. The funny part about the "Texas girl = cattle rancher" is that the guy I'm dating (from SC)'s family are cattle farmers...my state has the wrong stereotype! Haha!
  7. This is so true...I'm from Texas and I went to college in South Carolina. Even in SC people were puzzled when I informed them that no, I do not live on a ranch and raise cattle. My focus in lit is actually Southern lit studies and I love all these little dialects and stereotypes, lol.
  8. It's so crazy...my house is fine but one of my friends in Austin is on day 3 with our power, has only trail mix left to eat, and was taking short intervals of sitting in her car for heat/power to charge her phone. A church close to her opened up it's rec center and she's able to sit inside there now, but it's not very covid safe...sacrificing social distancing for heat.
  9. UVA is still accepting apps as well! Their priority deadline was Jan 15 though.
  10. Clemson! It’s not my top choice, but I’m just so happy to have gotten in somewhere. And I really do love that backwards state of South Carolina. The roads are iced over here in Texas (crazy...), so I celebrated by driving to work really, really slow haha. I’m going to California to visit my boyfriend this weekend so hopefully we can celebrate v-day and grad school all at once!
  11. I got into my first MA program!!! I know most of y'all are PhD applicants, but this is so huge for me!! I got offered a teaching assistantship for two years!!!! This means I can move out of my parents house in August!!!!!!!
  12. @Bopie5 congratulations!!! You're off to do great things!
  13. I'm starting to get nervous for UGA! It's a top 3 choice for me (and my sister went to undergrad there so I LOVE the city). Historically, their results come out smack dab in the middle of February, as in this week or next. Go bulldogs!
  14. I really have no idea how these things work. UGA has a Dec 1 deadline...UVA has a May 1 deadline???? with a "priority deadline" of Jan 15??? what even does this all mean. Part of me says its better to wait and anticipate good news than it is to have news and it be bad. Part of me thinks It would be better to just know and get it over with. I'm thankful I found this forum to commiserate and celebrate with others
  15. MA results usually come out later than PhD! Think around late feb - mid march.
  16. For those of you lovely folk who have attended/are attending a masters program for lit, around when did you hear back? Is it a different timeline from phds? (I imagine so, since there are no interviews.)
  17. This is so relatable to me. You are not alone in these thoughts. Even though I didn't like my job, it was still really rattling when they let me go. I'm finishing up my final two weeks and then I have no clue what to do for the next six months...I just applied to an unpaid virtual internship, so I feel like I'm almost regressing just looking for something to do to fill my resume and my time. Luckily, I live with my parents, so I don't really need to worry about the fall out from not having my paycheck anymore. I was trying to save money for rent and expenses while in grad school, so now I'm starting to get nervous about not having that next year. Yikes. I'm in need of some good news.
  18. I felt the same way! Instead, I just felt immediate anxiety about all the waiting and doubt I would experience in the following months.
  19. I would like to repeat the thanks given! No updates yet, but hopeful to get some in the next week or two. I'm hoping to specialize in Southern-American Literature (i.e. Kate Chopin, Tennessee Williams, Harper Lee, etc. and not South American lit). Specifically, gender and sexuality in the American South from Antebellum period to present. Kind of a wide net, but a fun one
  20. I do Orange Theory about 3-5 times a week and then yoga/long distance running each once a week! I've always wanted to get into barre but couldn't budget it with my Orange Theory membership.
  21. I love puzzles!!! My family has gotten into the NYT daily mini-crossword app and have a competition to see who can do it the fastest each day. It's very entertaining. I've also started doing sudoku again (I had a childhood obsession). I love tiny, brain-busting games and puzzles.
  22. My sister just picked up knitting and has been trying to get me to join her! I love how dainty and sweet embroidery is. And I love houseplants! My room in my house is too dark, so I stick to succulents, but I am also a houseplant enthusiast. I just read Transcendent Kingdom and enjoyed it lots! I'm currently trekking though Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates.
  23. Happy New Year!! I'm stressing about waiting, as I just lost my regular job which was keeping me busy. It was supposed to end in June, but now it's ending next week, so I'm a bit anxious about everything now. I'm hoping the weather will warm up soon in Texas (thanks, global warming...) so I can spend lots of time outdoors with my 4 month old corgi puppy! I'm just planning on going on lots of runs, working out a ton, getting more into a yoga practice, and baking more gluten and dairy free treats. I'm one of those people who likes to be busy for most of my waking hours in the day and loves a checklist of tasks. One can only make up so many reasons to go to Target and Trader Joe's in a week. If anyone has any fun hobbies that are quick to learn and active, let me know! Also, book suggestions are always loved and appreciated! Best wishes and prayers (to those who believe in that sort of thing and want them) for everyone!
