  1. This thread from people waiting last year makes it look like notifications arrived around 10/10:30am EST? https://academicjobs.wikia.org/wiki/Dissertation_Fellowships_2018-2019
  2. Neighborhoods in Oakland/Berkeley For those heading to Berkeley/Stanford etc.. this fall, I've just had some advice about different areas of Oakland and Berkeley. Oakland is a lot less expensive than Berkeley and significantly less expensive than SF. As a disclaimer this is obviously just one person's perspective. It does not mean the rest of the E Bay is uninhabitable. It is just a bit of advice based on personal experience. She has been living in East Oakland for three years, and has lived in the Bay Area almost 10 years. Everyone's sense of comfort/affordability is different. "I would say the best spot in Oakland that also stands a chance of being affordable is Rockridge. The muggings/robberies are definitely there but it's so cute and accessible and the risk is lower. Of course Glenview and Piedmont, Montclair, around Piedmont Avenue is usually good but also pricey. North Berkeley is nice-- most of Berkeley is nice. Perhaps a little bit less so right around Ashby BART/ MLK/ Adeline. Housing close to campus is convenient and safe but also houses a lot of undergrads - so there can be noise/overcrowding issues. North Berkeley is nice, can be expensive, but is more remote, less walkable but has BART." Just in case that's helpful at all!
  3. Congrats!! Isn't it exciting? What's your research interest area if you don't mind me asking? As for the detailed offer being sent, I'm not sure. I was so surprised (as you said it was an unknown number) that I think I made a bit of a fool of myself saying "ok, wow, thank you." I did have the wherewithal to ask if the details would come by post or by email, and it is the latter, so hopefully won't be too long...
  4. I can claim the second Berkeley Jurisprudence and Social Policy admission! 5 years of funding including summers... My choice just got so much more difficult!
  5. Thanks, that's the impression I got as well. I live in London, so without any travel assistance to make a dent in the $1000 flight it's unlikely I can be there. Has he revealed anything re funding? My POI directed me to the grad coordinator with questions, but no answers yet other than await official offer letter in the post...
  6. Does anyone know if Davis are paying for people to attend the recruitment event?
  7. Hi VirginianFeminist I do have an interest in feminist legal studies, but my focus professionally has been on gender and the construction of law and policy relating to migration - trafficking, refugee and asylum issues, displacement etc... I've been an expert witness in gender-based asylum cases for several years now and I do a lot of human rights advocacy work with courts and governments. Berkeley does a lot of work in those areas and there is some overlap with faculty who also have an interest in women's rights. I don't think there is necessarily anyone specifically on the JSP faculty who does exactly what I want to do, but I am really interested in Sarah Song's work on citizenship and migration. That said, however, she never emailed me back, so maybe not a good fit...
  8. Hey marneasada I haven't had an actual admission offer yet, I just had an email from my POI wanting to make sure I was really genuinely interested in attending before there was any nomination for any fellowships. I believe the departments recommend people for admission/funding but then it all has to be approved on a higher level before they make offers. Thanks for the info about funding! I'm slightly older than your average PhD student (at 30) and I'm married with various responsibilities so just trying to make sure that we would have enough to live on! Don't let an informal chat worry you too much, you can never be sure what they are looking for. Maybe they love your applicaiton and just need clarification on a few points. I have had a lot of "bad" job interviews that I thought went terribly that resulted in job offers so I don't think anyone can tell for sure! Good luck with all your applications!
  9. $10k per quarter is the maximum central fellowship, and yes that would be great. However it may be that robust - in the current UC budget crisis - means half that or less, that is what I was wondering about.
  10. Hey all I've had an email from feminist studies at UCSB saying I'll be nominated for a central fellowship and that I'm likely to get robust funding - wondering if anyone knows (in actual numeric terms) what that means? I've been on the UCSB website and I have seen the info about $10k/quarter but it seems to me that there isn't any info about what constitutes a small/normal/robust package. Anyone have any ideas? I've seen a few posts about fellowships from other UCSB departments (I think someone in Physics or Chemistry had a 28k stipend) but nothing from feminist studies or even another humanities/social science program... thoughts anyone?
  11. Hello mygrotianmoment I applied to the JSP program as well and since I've already heard back from the other places I applied I feel like waiting til mid-Feb to hear from them will seem like an eternity. I also haven't seen anyone else mention it on gradcafe for this admissions cycle... Do you have a law degree already? And did you establish contact with a POI? Good luck!
  12. Hello all I have an acceptance at Davis as well - wondering if anyone knows what the funding situation could be? I've been searching on these boards for anything from previous Davis students to see what kind of package they might offer. Has anyone seen anything?
  13. Great things all around then! My research area is gender and migration, specifically violence in gender and migration - I've been working in refugee and related issues for a long time, so I'm hoping to be able to draw on feminist/gender studies, critical theory, feminist geography and other related fields... How are people feeling about GRE? I'm pleased with my verbal/writing scores, but my math score is, frankly, awful. I don't want to foolishly assume that just because these aren't hard science programs it means no one cares about math. What do people think?
  14. Just thought I'd start a thread here for anyone applying for women/gender/feminist studies programs for fall 2014. (If there is one already please direct me there, I couldn't find anything.) I thought maybe we could discuss applications, GRE scores, statements of purpose etc... and keep each other posted on progress! To kick things off... my first choice to the PhD in Feminist Studies UC Santa Barbara, also looking at Cultural Studies at UC Davis, MTL at Stanford, and maybe Rhetoric or Ethnic Studies at Berkeley with the designated emphasis in women, gender and sexuality. (In case it isn't obvious, being in California is crucial for me - I've been living abroad 8 years and am really keen to go home!) So where are others applying? How are people feeling about GRE scores, letters of rec, personal statements etc...?
