  1. honestly, it seems very random. everyone else I know got rejected. A friend of mine who was waitlisted last year was rejected outright this year. Another friend who got the Sharpe Walentas studio space and the LMCC residency (two SUPER competitive NYC based programs) was waitlisted and i would be the first person to say he is a better artist than I am. I have been rejected from every single issue of New American Paintings and the two ppl who got in to the last one both got rejected from Skowhegan. I was really surprised. So there's really no logic to it. The judges change every year and I think it has to do with the faculty's tastes. And frankly if something is that random it can't be used as a metric for artistic worth. So keep on applying but also don't fixate on the documentation or the details. Always be moving forward!
  2. I got into skowhegan... I am very surprised. It was my third year applying... And neither year did I receive that little note saying I made it to the final round. so just fyi for ppl that are frustrated or feeling discouraged: I got rejected from every residency I applied to in 2014 and 2015, including all my top MFA choices. and this year I got into skowhegan and another quite competitive residency so I guess you just have to keep applying and keep working hard. good luck to everyone here. we are all lucky to have the time, resources and imagination to make art and no matter where we do it it is a privilege.
  3. Has anyone not heard yet, been wait listed, accepted? Etc. or been rejected beyond the initial wave of rejections that went out yesterday... Haven't heard anything, freaking out here.
  4. did anyone apply to the august 31st deadline for northeast? has anyone heard? Thanks!
  5. I'm sorry you feel that way. I feel that way about my program as well. Stay until it's over. It's like a bad (but not abusive) relationship. Infuriating, frustating, world-darkening. But once you get out you will have gained a lot of wisdom (and no debt) and soon you'll be laughing at how stupid it was and how much better off you are wherever you choose to go next.
  6. Studio visit magazine obviously - it's not actually juried by anyone credible and then you have to pay for a publication fee. It's the exact same thing as the first opportunity. New American paintings is much more legitimate - the last issue was juried by Michelle grabner who curated the most recent Whitney biennial. You pay an entry fee but then there is nothing else if you are selected. I mean, it's a real competition. I think that if you had it on your cv the response would be at worst neutral and likely positive. The other two things are scams. Don't enter them, don't put them on your cv, don't empower people who are operating under false pretenses. Spend your money on art supplies or cute clothes for going to gallery openings: those will help you more. Srsly
  7. This type of a thing is a scam. Don't submit. Those magazines will go straight to the garbage at Art Basel (hopefully the recycling bin actually) Just as you should never have to pay to be exhibited in a gallery, you should never have to pay to be published. It's the same as a vanity gallery.
  8. http://www.resartis.org/en/ http://www.artistcommunities.org/residencies Both of these are very thorough databases.
  9. you all do know that every time there is a new post on this board I assume it's someone who's heard and have a little stroke... before realizing that it's just another speculative post. lol
  10. yeah maybe it's a little brash (sorry) but it's true anyone who tells you to apply to the program or to even consider applying for it next year is doing you a giant disservice I went to your website - your work is quite good but it's really not "social practice" or engaging theory (even if you have an intellectual or theoretical approach). you're also very young. the people that go to that program are most in their 30's and doing work that has very little/nothing to do with craft and explicitly addresses institutional critique, labor, globalism, capitalism, identity politics, etc. a lot of the work is text based (i.e. art writing) as I said before, your work is good and you have the kind of background that will probably help you get into other equally prestigious residencies like skowhegan, macdowell, yaddo, vermont studio center (w fellowship) among others. I would focus my energies on those. you need a totally different type of statement of purpose for those types of residencies than you would the whitney isp. I know I sound like a jerk and a know it all but I'm giving you good advice. talk to your professors about it when you start your MFA next year and see what they say. Maybe I'm wrong (you never know).
  11. you're a printmaker (huge strike one) who hasn't gotten his or her MFA yet (strike two) my advice is don't apply. it'll be a waste of your time and money. it's for people who make theoretical art. the only two people I know who went there both did conceptual videos with a marxist bent and had already gotten their MFA's from Columbia. that program is impossible to get into and is only for a specific subset of artists. if you look at the faculty and past faculty there is literally no one who is a painter (or a printmaker for that matter) trust me on this one
  12. usually it's at the end of the first week in April - NOT April 1st.
  13. nyu's admission process after interviews is super staggered.. they let applicants know slowly. I applied there last year.. so don't stress if you don't hear right away
  14. um so if it says MFA after your painting thing at Columbia you've probably been rejected... that one girl got an interview. everyone else didn't. I don't know why they changed that process but it's over for everyone I think (including me). womp womp
  15. last year I heard from NYU for an interview invite on the 18th of February (today) so you'll hear any day I guess.
  16. they are reviewing now. you'll hear if you get an interview by e-mail towards the end of february I think.
  17. no.. they change your title to 2015 Painting MFA when they start considering applications and then if the MFA goes away that means you are no longer being considered as an applicant (i.e. you have been rejected). this has happened the past few years and is not an urban legend. which doesn't necessarily mean it will happen this way this year. my title has not changed. also it only pertains to columbia.
  18. has anyone's columbia slide room application title changed to add MFA to it?
  19. dooooo ittttt - and report back!
  20. it'll be on the application last year they posted around 11:00 pm but this year they pushed the application date back a week so they may not do it until next week... just hypothesizing tho
  21. this kind of thing is a total racket don't waste your money spend it on nice art supplies instead
  22. has anyone heard from the yale painting waitlist?
