POI told me. All acceptances were sent out. A real bummer because Vanderbilt is an excellent program.

You are so right. This has been an incredibly competitive and difficult cycle. Many, many qualified and brilliant people will be turned away. I'm going to try again next year if things don't work out. Good luck everyone!

As an addendum, I’ve been told that, at least in some places, americanists are being preferenced this year. There is also the fact that the job market for Europeanists is dire.

Much fewer spots. My POI at Berkeley told me that I would have been accepted in a normal year, but that they had the lowest number of Europeanists that they have ever taken in.

Has anyone heard anything from Stanford? I’ve been rejected from Vanderbilt and Berkeley (after interviewing) and Stanford is kind of my last hope. From what I’ve heard, Europe as a field has been hit really hard this cycle.

I didn't get informed one way or another. POI isn't on Adcom. I am assuming rejection but holding out hope for waitlist or even a possible admit. European history BTW.

My interviewer told me they were an application reader for my field (modern Europe). I think interviews are going to depend on field and the timeline of the faculty in those fields. According to grad cafe (which is of course not exhaustive) it seems like less than ten interviews have gone out. Keep up the hope!

I was one of the Berkeley posters as well. It was a very informal meeting, my potential advisor didn't even ask questions per se it was more of a conversation. They prefaced by saying that it was simply a new requirement of the graduate school so I believe the interviews are going to be more or less informal and sent out on a rolling basis.
