  1. I went to Lesley for undergrad! The new facilities are beautiful.
  2. I know someone. Do you have instagram? I can send you info there
  3. Are folks still getting interviews? I'm waiting to hear on one school, but feel like I may just take the plunge and accept the offer I have!
  4. Yeah I feel like I am sort of in this place and not wanting to drag it out too long... I let them know I will reach out with my decision as soon as possible, but also curious what people think a good personal deadline to wait til is if you havent heard from a school yet?
  5. Alright, question time y'all. At this point, how likely is it to hear from a school if you haven't gotten interviewed? And secondly, how long can you wait to give a school a decision? I'm holding out hope on one other school I applied to.
  6. amazing! Yeah you'll prob here after those meetings! good luck!
  7. I got a call first, and after we spoke I got the email. Where you in the facilities meeting on zoom this past week??
  8. When did you hear about waitlist? I got a cryptic email from them saying that basically all hope is not lost, and they are waiting on funding after sending out the first round of acceptances before they reach out to more folks. I applied for painting. But i do already have an offer and if the waiting goes into the summer.... how do you decide!?
  9. Yes, I got in! I heard this weekend.
  10. Who said coffee? Who said amenities? You're not making proper connections if your professors dont care about you.
  11. I unfortunately dont know much about parsons. Anyone else? In regards to NYC I've heard most great things about state/city schools
  12. I'm sorry but the cost of tuition there SHOULD get you nice studios, facilities etc and more than the ability to make art while homeless. I mean, really. Thats a very fantastical way to think about education, but the reality is if you're paying for school you are hoping to get useful tools and connections out of that, not just some external "hustle." School is part of that network building. If you are paying as much as you are for SVA the professors should be enthusiastic and generous.
  13. Not necessarily an opinion, just what I have heard from folks who attended! I am sure not everyone there is from a wealthy background, but many international students dont qualify for aid so they have to pay out of pocket.
  14. Hmm... from my understanding, it was that they have a lot of big name professors who don't really care about teaching. So you have access to big names, but they are not dedicated to you. And that every little thing is an extra charge, and what you get for your money is not a lot. I don't personally know what the studios look like and my partner was in illustration, but his studio was a cubicle. Now, you only really need a cubicle for illustration maybe but.. thats in comparison to my experience where illustration got studios same size as fine arts students, and they were all large. I also had a friend do a residency there with the same complaints - fancy professors who were never around or willing to help, meh access to facilities, a huge fee, etc etc. None of the professors from that program were even willing to write her a recommendation. SO you're paying for access, to be in NY, to be around the professors, but not necessarily for rigor or building a long lasting community.
  15. My partner attended SVA for undergrad and said they do massive advertising in Asia to pull in wealthy international students who need no aid. As someone mentioned here, its a for-profit school, and most folks I know that went there said it FEELS for profit. It feels like youre there to make them money.
  16. SO sorry to hear about your rejection but HUGE congrats on Tulane. it is soooo competitive, and totally free and such an honor to get in!!! Amazing for you!
  17. Hmmm I would definitely not say that LOL Do you LIKE science? Does it inform your artwork at all? Those are the things I would tie in. Or I would talk about how you've always liked art or been an artist (if thats the case, it sounds liek you wanted to go to art school) and then talk about how you got to science. I think science and art can be intertwined so they may just be interested in how you got where you are and how the two interests may feed off each other.
  18. Update from GSU - I emailed and was told that they sent out first round of applications but that they are waiting to hear form those folks and funders before sending more offers/making any more decisions. So ... sorta hopeful!!?!
  19. Thank you for saying this. I think its important people realize "affordable" is different for different people and that NY may not work for everyone. I live here and grew up here and dont think its affordable aha. I can't afford studio space either (and I work a full time job, which most artist I know do not) and my partner and I have a "home studio" which is just the bedroom in our one bedroom. It works perfectly for us, but its not the big beautiful studio space you see many others having. Now I also know artists with many roommates who pay less in rent, but pay about the cost of rent for a studio monthly. It greatly depends on HOW you want to live, and WHY you want to be someplace. Debating one city over another feels a bit silly on here when it should really be about the school experience you want and what you plan to do after.
  20. Do you have a strong/stable career now? I only ask because 300 a month sounds doable if you have one, but I can tell you i make in the 50k range in NYC and paying rent + all other bills plus my loan payment (which is around the same) is... hard. I am so grateful for the federal deferment right now LOL I think you make a good point about your personality though. If you really feel like you need to be around a lot of people for your creativity to thrive, that is good to keep in mind. But i like to think of a small program that offers a lot of aid as a place that really wants to invest in YOU. They believe in their students, they want to put money into you and your experience. I think that's really valuable. I think either way you should feel really great that you got into both of these programs and are having to make this decision lol
  21. I used to have this same mindset but have changed my mind as time goes on - but yeah its so different person to person. As someone who doesnt come from money at all, and the first person to graduate college in my family etc seeing folks in my family who own NOTHING no car no house.. really got me thinking that those things matter to me a lot more and I don't want anymore debt to possibly hinder my chances of that. Like yes, being an artist doesn't make much money, but because of that I wouldn't want more debt looming over me and making things overall harder. However I think theres a big difference in choosing slightly lower debt vs a lot debt, and free vs a lot of debt LOL
  22. This is a very personal decision and one I think you should think really long and hard about, but from everything I've been told from mentors and artists - get the cheapest MFA possible especially when there are so many great programs that are more affordable. I mean if you're thinking of keeping your mortgage vs school, i would definitely do what I needed to do keep the mortgage. I'm also from a financially challenged background and have 30k in undergrad debt. I have barely made a dent in it. You could regret not going to SAIC for the experience but be in a financially stable place, or go to SAIC and be so burdened by debt that it leaves a cloud over it.
  23. I meant more about the quality of the work. but this was for painting/sculpture, so I cant speak to other departments.
