I personally visited the MFA studios at SVA a few years back and was really unimpressed... and as someone currently living in New York i really rarely meet artists with grad degrees from there/ no one is talking about that program highly. This is my personal experience, but I've just heard sooo much good stuff about SAIC - and that community would transfer to NY for sure
In my opinion, 100k is too much debt for an mfa. To eachs own, but realistically think of the chances of you paying that back if you don't "make it big" and work a normal job
I'm still payig undergrad off so cant imagine tacking on that much more debt
I'm not TOTALLY surprised - are you fresh out of undergrad? The average age for someone getting an MFA is getting higher, I think and my understanding is that some life experience outside of school is appealing to them. But who knows, it definitely is a bummer if it came off in a weird way
Havent gotten an interview yet but only one of my recommenders was a professor. One is an artist/curator and the other an artist/museum worker. I graduated in 2015 and didnt stay in contact with many professors (a lot have retired since) but kept in contact with one via instagram (thank god for social media, because he really got to see an evolution of my work on there)
Painting! That’s what I was thinking too, it seems that way from other posts here that schools do different departments on slightly different timelines.
Museum studies is an absolute waste of time + money - I worked in museums with just a BFA and was surrounded by folks with museum studies degrees in lower paid positions. There was absolutely no way they would pay off their debt.
I think stability/financial security is an illusion at this point, at least in terms of pursuing a degree in the hopes of security. You get the degree because you want to make art for two or three years. I'm just trudging along and hoping for the best! Its all we can do!
