  1. i cosign the half.com and amazon suggestions. i'm literally addicted to buying things off of amazon right now - maybe it has something to do with my nostalgia for real mail? either way, i ordered all twenty-one (yes, twenty-one) of my fall semester books off of either half.com or amazon. plus a new cover for my laptop. and a new case. and a new bag to carry my books to and from class. and an 1TB external hard drive. and a case for that, too. and scotch guard, for my new couch (not purchased on amazon), but only because it was nearly free. for those with textbook lists/past experience, is twenty-one textbooks the norm?
  2. this thread makes me so happy - to add my $.02, i think an insulated coffee carafe is completely necessary. i'm not a coffee snob by any stretch of the imagination - IMO, coffee, like alcohol, does not need to taste wonderful, it just needs to fulfill its intended function. with that being said, i'm kind of obsessed with my carafe. imagine: i wake up early one morning to start a marathon day of working at my computer. i make a pot of coffee, drink a cup or two, then leave the rest in the pot. by noon, when i need another cup, the coffee from this morning is either cold or scorched. i throw away what was left, and start another pot. repeat cycle. huge waste of time and money. for those with similarly undistinguished tastes re: your caffeine, peep the carafe i have through the link below - it keeps your coffee hot (and your caffeine-high maintained) for up to eight hours. fantastic. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=126992
  3. Not sure if writing a response will prompt a revival of this thread, but I'm starting at Hopkins in the fall (or, really, next month) and just moved to Mt Vernon! I haven't tried to get to school via the shuttle yet but in terms of the neighborhood it's adooorable, I'm pretty obsessed with it. I moved in last week after driving here from LA and had never seen the apartment before - I was underwhelmed at first, to say the least, but after looking at a few other apartments and spending 96 hours straight cleaning, I realized that 1. Mt Vernon apartments are older and sometimes have strange layouts and 2. cleaning changes everything. I'm in love with the apartment now, our landlady is eccentric but easy going, and I'm so glad I went for this Mt Vernon apartment over any of the others. If you're still looking at apartments, check out www.padmapper.com; I can't really do it justice, but it helped me out immensely when I was trying to figure out where to live. Good luck!
  4. that's what i almost went with, until i read dozens of reviews that said their WD 1TB shit the bed after only a few uses. not sure if i'm willing to try my luck...
  5. I've been obsessively searching Amazon and other review sites and the external hard drives I've read reviews for sound tempermental at best. Any suggestions or personal accounts for amazing external hard drives that have never failed that you can't live without? Thanks!
  6. I think it depends on how many credits you're taking. Did you see this page? http://wagner.nyu.edu/admissions/financialaid/ This page (http://wagner.nyu.edu/pnp/reqs.php) also says that 60 credits are required for graduation; each credit is $954, plus there are added fees for the first credit per semester and each credit thereafter.
  7. is anyone attending the LA admitted students' reception?
  8. this is probably the most useful conversation i've ever witnessed!
  9. true, but i love my inspiron in the blindly-loyal sort of way; i've had problems with it from the first moment. first it was this weird thing with the touch pad no one could fix, then the battery shit the bed, it only sporadically picks up wireless, etc etc - on top of the fact that it's just slow. i upgraded, which somewhat helped, but windows vista is still so slow it makes me want to cry. i love it because it has gotten me from point A to point B and sometimes back again, but my first inclination is to run screaming from a dell, though i am open to convincing. with all that said, can you tell me about your 1720? why that computer? what are your specs?
  10. I love my Dell Inspiron 1501, but it's going on 5 years, and I fantasize about Macs, though I know nothing about them. Does anyone have any advice on a computer they purchased for going back to school? What did you end up buying? What do you wish you had bought? What specs were you looking for? And most importantly, if you own a Mac, out of all the beautiful Macs to choose from, which did you pick? Any help is much appreciated!
  11. Jaclyn Clevenger! There was a link to an interesting blog post, check out the Fels website.
  12. haha! i did the exact same thing, except i was in the middle of a meeting (4:30PM PST) and audibly inhaled, though i will admit that it may have been a gasp
  13. for me it said they weren't able to give any information about funding yet
