RE: UC Davis I got an email from them on Friday that said my status would be updated on March 12th after 8pm. The email came from the grad division, not the department, so I'm anticipating seeing a rejection posted. (I haven't had an interview or anything). Best of luck to those who are interviewing today!

Hey dukegirl, have you had your interview with GWU yet? Just curious. I just had mine. I think it went well... Decisions are supposed to go out next week.
-
I'd be working with Craig Nagoshi. I was notified about a month ago (I think). I'm interested in prejudice and stereotyping, particularly relating to the GLBT community. Dr. Nagoshi is doing some fascinating work on homophobia and transphobia. And thanks. I'm pretty excited too!

I'm in at ASU in the psychology department. I got a phone call from a professor and then my status changed on their website. I'm visiting in a couple weeks and looking forward to it!
-
I also applied for social psych at UC Davis. I did not get an interview invite or a generic email. Hmmmm... Guess I'll check my status on Monday and hope for the best! I did just get a phone interview invite for GWU. No idea if they're interviewing all candidates or not. The email (from my POI) said I was on a short list and proposed a couple of phone interview times. We'll see...

If CGU turns out to be the best option for me, I'm willing to go into debt for it. My undergrad is paid off, so it wouldn't be too bad. That said, if I'm deciding between CGU w/out funding and an equally good program w/funding, I'll go with the funding.
-
FYI: The applied social psych page at CGU has a note on it saying - "We still have a few spaces left for Fall 2009. Please contact Paul Thomas, Director of External Affairs, immediately if you would like to be considered for Fall enrollment." Interesting.

I applied for the applied social PhD at Claremont Graduate. I got notified of my acceptance on Tuesday by email (from my POI). I'm thinking they probably haven't made all decisions or notifications yet though. They take at least 20 people per year for the phd program, so odds aren't too bad.

Hmm... I'd say it depends which of the social sciences you're in. Personally, I'm voting in one of the sciences categories.
-
Interesting... but I agree with medianerd. Where are the social sciences?

Hi Dukegirl, I also applied to the GW applied social psych program and haven't heard anything yet. Such a late application deadline though, so I'm not expecting to hear until sometime in March. And to those who got into U Conn, congrats! I'm on "an informal wait list" there. So not too likely to get admission at this point. Oh well.

Just wanted to let the OP know that some of us are just as anxious about whether or not we'll succeed in grad school. I certainly don't keep a clean desk (either at home or work). I'm not so worried about competition with my fellow grad students. I'm struggling more with impostor syndrome. I've been out of school for five years and I'm sure I've forgotten everything and will be miles behind my cohort. My friends who are grad students keep telling me that everyone feels this way and I'll be fine, but I'm still worried. I suspect I'll stay worried until I actually have that PhD in my hand.

Hi Psychosin, I was accepted to ASU without an interview. I got a phone call from my potential advisor telling me I was accepted and we talked a bit about the research he's doing right now. Their recruitment weekend is in mid-March, so I'll be flying down to Phoenix for that. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions.

Good question t_ruth. Three of the programs I applied to were applied social psych, so I did state my true goals on those. On the others, I said I wanted to teach AND do applied research. Which may very well end up happening. Who knows? But it is stretching the truth a bit. I will certainly be up front about my goals with whichever program I end up going to though.
-
I'm going to be getting a PhD in Social Psychology and not going into academia (unless I completely change my mind, which I suppose could happen). I hope to go into social policy research. Maybe work for a think tank like RAND. Or a government agency.

Just a note about UCSC - funding cuts have been extensive, and they are cutting way down on the amount of TA-ships offered. Good luck to everyone applying there! It's really a beautiful place to live and work.

Learning welding is totally my back up plan!
-
Most of my programs accept around 5%. A couple have accepted up to 12 or 14%, but I don't know what they'll do this year with all the budget cuts.
-
Ugh. This is all so stressful. I wish they'd just tell us and get it over with!!
-
But didn't you get a phone interview with Davis? I'd still hold out hope in that case. I haven't heard a word from either Irvine or Davis, and I know some folks have already interviewed with both. Oh well! This feels like such a lottery.
-
Ok, my question about UCLA has been answered in the form of a generic rejection letter. *sigh* Oh well, UCLA was probably the biggest reach for me, but I had hopes since my research interests are an excellent fit with the faculty there. I'm pretty much giving up on UC Davis and Irvine at this point too. I'm so thankful I have one acceptance to cushion the blow!

I'm in a completely different position than most posters. All my co-workers and both my supervisors have known for more than a year that I'm planning to go back to school. In fact, one of my supervisors wrote a letter of rec for me. I'll be helping to recruit, hire, and train my replacement. I've been such a scatterbrain through the whole application process, I don't know how I could have hidden it from them all!

Sooo... I've been accepted to ASU for social psychology. I'll be visiting for their recruitment weekend, but would love to hear from some current ASU grad students (if any are reading this). I know plenty about ASU's party school reputation for undergrad, but not so much about their grad reputation. Anyone have any insight to share?

I haven't heard of programs giving different funding packages to married students, but I am worried about getting health care coverage for my partner. And I just want to say that even when it is financially beneficial to be able to check "single" on the fafsa, or tax forms, or whatever, it's still humiliating to be forced to legally deny your partner.

To the folks who interviewed at UCLA and UC Davis: Any word yet on acceptances or rejections? Thanks!
