Is anyone still waiting on uOttawa MPH?

So re this I thought a lot of you would find it interesting on how they roll out the admissions processes.. I talked to the co-director for a different program at U of T (MHSc in clinical physiology) who also used to be my prof and from talking to her and going to the DLSPH open house in 2018 here's how I assume they do their admissions for DLSPH at the very least, if not for other graduate schools/programs as well. Round 1: After reviewing everyone's files they send out initial rejectiioins. These are people who did not meet the "unspecified" cut off. As someone said earlier they liikely rank you on each part of your application then choose a cutoff rank for further considerations. They also do immediate acceptances. This is for the most highly rated candidates who applied. They want to be competetive with other schools so they offer these people admissioins first. Ongoing rounds: So this is where it gets interesting. From talking to my old prof, she said that they want to ensure their incoming cohort is diverse in terms of demographics (place of undergrad, undergraduate study, age, race, ethnicity, etc.) AND diverse in experiences. Hence even though a lot of medical professionals apply they obvs want a cohort that is mixed in terms of their experiences. This is mostly because they only have so many seats to fill so they want to make sure that even though it's a "smaller" program, they have a representative group. TLDR: if you haven't heard an answer, it's not that you're rejected and have to wait for a spot to open up, it's more likely that they have already admitted their top candidates and are now in the process of a rolling decision to ensure they have a diverse cohort for the incoming class. Be patient! It's still early for decisions to be coming out and most schools won't finalize until June/July. Congrats to everyone who received acceptances already and good luck to everyone still waiting!

What the heck? The more i learn about OSAP the happier I am that I retained my Alberta residency... Alberta loans cover so much more in terms of schools/programs. Only downside is far less grant funding available.

Rejected from MSc epi at uOttawa this morning. So I guess they do send decisions on weekends afterall lol

These are awesome stats/backgrounds! You seem really well-rounded and would make a great fit to any program!

Same here Lame U of T, lame. Fingers crossed for uOttawa and Western now

No problem! I was connected through my program at U of T. My U of T supervisor (since I'm doing this project as my specialist project) was also the same supervisor I had last year. There is a whole list of organisations affiliated with the Canadian Council of Refugees and mine is also affiliated. I would suggest reaching out to university faculty members who are cross-appointed between certain organisations and schools to volunteer under them. If you're in Toronto, York as well as DLSPH are both really great for that. York has more connections imo though. Not going to lie, a lot of my experiences were through some sort of connection or sort of "fell into my lap" so to speak. So it never hurts to network and be friendly at conferences, student clubs, etc.

Program – I'm in my last year at U of T doing an honours BSc with a specialization in global health & minors in German studies and Physiology. GPA – cGPA is not great do to some rlly unfortunate circumstances my first couple years – 76% I think is what I put for uOttawa. My sub GPA for Western was a 3.3, and 3.7 for U of T. But if my fall grades are used for U of T then my sub GPA was a 4.0 Stats – I got a B+ in my calculus courses, and then a C+ in my first stats course, but I took a harder stats course and got an A-. I also took AP stats in highschool. I took two epi courses too and got an A- in the first one and an A in the upper level one. Stats experience in excel and R. Experience – I shadowed in a (wet)lab at SickKids and an infectious disease specialist at TGH in my first & second year. After second year & third year I volunteered and did clinical research (w stats analysis) in a specialised lung clinic. 4th year I did a placement project looking at behavioural aspects to engage youth in extracurriculars as a means of health promotion. This year I am currently researching refugee youth and their health outcomes in Canada and started working on a policy statement. One conference, no pubs. I'm also currently the health director for a not for profit that assists getting hygiene products and increasing health care accessibility for refugees and new immigrants.
