Hi all! I wondered if there are any current students in Ontario SLP programs who could tell me if they think it’s possible to work part-time while in the program? Just trying to plan out my life haha

I'm currently an SLP student at UofT and work part time on the weekends. It's doable but was quite difficult in the beginning. Anything more than just working weekends wouldn't be feasible, especially considering how we were in classes every day of the week for our first unit. Our second unit we had Fridays off but I still elected to keep that as a study day. I'm glad I kept my job and I'm managing but everyone is different of course.

First of all congrats to everyone who got acceptances!
I was waitlisted at UofT and Western.
I found it odd that Western stated there would be zero information about where we sit on the waitlist as historically they have shared quadrant information.

Is anyone else super suspicious of why none of these schools share waitlist information?
My theory (and please tell me if you think I’m insane) is that they have “quotas” and essentially there isn’t much of an order to the waitlist. If their (for example) bisexual applicant accepts somewhere else, they contact their “next in line” bisexual applicant, etc.

It just makes zero sense to me why they can’t share our position on the waitlist, how many people they waitlist, or really anything in regards to waitlist.

Plus all that information they had us input about gender, sexual identity, nationality, etc doesn’t make me any less suspicious. 😅

I honestly think western stopped sharing wait list information because they've gotten severely inundated with applications in the recent years. I think the people who get accepted, do so because they have every right to be there, irrespective of a certain quota. I know our current first year cohort at UofT is probably the most diverse one yet but that could be down to quite literally anything besides just EDI. While they may take this into account, I don't believe it would be an overriding factor into whether someone receives an acceptance or offer to the program. And quite frankly, if this is something they are considering when looking at apps, I don't think it's a terrible thing when you consider how diverse the populations SLPs work with are and continue to be.  I hesitate to bring this up because I'd probably be crucified but if you look back at previous cohorts, they've consisted mainly of white women and one man thrown in the mix. I think the lack of transparency and information about the waitlist is because they've become so inundated with applications and so that their selection process can remain private for whatever reason.

My idea is that I mainly lacked hands-on experience. I didn't get any feedback about why I was rejected though. I was also in the final year of my undergraduate degree and someone on this forum suggested it could've been because I had prerequisites in progress? I didn't really understand how that would affect my application though.

I think my application is stronger this time around. My sGPA is higher at a 3.94 and I'm also currently working as an EA to help boost my application. I also improved my statement of intent as I had more experience to talk about compared to last year.

It was really discouraging at first but I learned a lot working in this position and I feel more (cautiously) optimistic knowing I have some experience to back up my drive to become a SLP. It goes to show that admissions can be really unpredictable. Wishing everyone good luck!

I'm a current SLP student at UofT and I have classmates with lower sGPAs and less experience who were able to get in. I know many that did not have any direct SLP related experience but were accepted. Even if you haven't had any direct hands on experience in the field, I would not discount other experiences that involve leadership, working with kids, research, volunteering in the community etc, which many of them had.

My sGPA was similar to yours and I had some experience working with adults with aphasia, but definitely not as vast as others that I know. It's quite a peculiar case that UofT did not accept you since they value GPA quite a bit but it could be the references and statement of intent that may have been a contributing factor. The statement of intent and having strong references can really elevate an application. I know western especially wants students to demonstrate how their past experiences, regardless of whether they are SLP-related, make them a good fit for the field, and what characteristics they believe will make them a good clinician.

From the dozens of statement of intents I've read, the ones from those who get in are really more on discussing those aspects rather than talking about their passion for the field and simply listing their experiences instead of elaborating on the WHY. I know UofT is seen as the school that cares only about academics but you need to be well rounded. It's also very important to ask professors who can give you a strong reference, as that can help you stick out as well. It seems as though you have improved both of those aspects so you'll likely hear back. Having your prerequisites in progress is not at all a factor that would have discounted you.

I know this is a late reply as I'm not as active on this forum because of coursework but I hope this may be a bit helpful to you and others perplexed by this.

  4. I hope this doesn't come across as boastful because I'm just genuinely curious if anyone else who was accepted to western also received a call from them? I got a call from a professor at Western letting me know that herself and the department/committee were incredibly impressed with my application and hope I attend. Not sure if all students who receive an acceptance get that call. I've accepted U of T's offer and am set on attending their program but that was incredibly validating. I'm very shook.

@SLPPLS101 I applied to several American schools just in case and thankfully have heard back from all of them and got into a couple pretty competitive programs! If I don't get in to one of the Canadian schools I applied to, I'll likely go to the states. However, I'd obviously prefer staying in Canada if I can because of the cost would be much lower. Friday can't come soon enough. ?

But also, how is Friday arriving so soon? I'm going to be an absolute mess this whole week ?

    Hi everyone!

Is anyone else else in the same boat - I'm a current fourth year at York and applied to SLP programs at University of Toronto and Western but I'm concerned about the talk surrounding a strike at York. They announced the tentative day for a strike to be March 23 but negotiations are still going on. I feel really good about my applications and will be devastated if this strike affects my chance at admissions due to marks not being allowed to be submitted or courses being put on hold so close to when I was supposed to graduate.

Does anyone have any insight on what would happen in this case with my applications? It's my first time ever going through something like this and it's been stressing me out a lot. For now I'm trying to carry on with my school work and hope for the best. Thanks guys :)

Hi! I also completed my degree at York U and went through a strike albeit it was ages ago and during my second year. I know that schools will need to look at your remainder grades in order for you to keep your admission but I'm not entirely sure what will happen in the case that a strike occurs. I know last time some professors did continue courses and gave students the opportunity to accept a grade based on 60% of assessments being completed and many still gave students the opportunity to write a final exam or assessment. If a strike does ensue and you receive admission before the remainder of your grades are released, I'd communicate with the specific school you end up accepting your offer of admission.

Hey guys so subGPAs are up and mine turned out much lower than expected. For people that have graduated and had to reapply what have you done in the one year to improve your application? Also with COVID a lot of places are not accepting new volunteers and I have a couple of virtual SLP-related opportunities but I don't think it is enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

The main advice I've gotten from current SLP students who had to go through the process of reapplying was to try and increase one's subGPA. One student I know said that while she ended up doing a CDA program what she felt ultimately helped her get into an SLP program was that she went back, retook some courses and got her subGPA up. She emphasized that while the CDA program gave her more insight to the field and more practical experience, which can help in boosting your application, it isn't a golden ticket to SLP like a lot of her classmates thought. I know it's probably tiring to hear again and again but this is what I hear the most.

  8. I got an email from western yesterday and was immediately panicking until I realized it was just them sending me my western ID number lol. I'm kinda surprised at how fast January sped by and it'll be February soon. The waiting game sucks but time is going so fast that I feel like April is going to be here before we know it. I'm counting down the days till it's February and we get our subGPA calculation because I'm just hoping that I did the math right and that they don't make any errors either. Does anyone else feel like all of this is kinda surreal? I've been working towards this career goal for years and now the wait is only a few months away. Hoping the very best for everyone! Nearly there!

Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone knows when our subGPA will be posted by ORPAS? I feel like I haven't calculated mine right so I'm waiting to see what it is! Thanks :)

They said the subGPA calculation should be available early February. They didn't give a specific date but I'm assuming it'll be within the first week or so of February.

Hi everyone! For those of you who applied to U of T through ORPAS... Have your transcripts been submitted yet? I know there's still 10 days until they're due, but I'm getting nervous!

When I go to the transcripts section, it says that it's been "received." If you're seeing something similar, I don't think you need to worry. Not sure if it also depends on the University they're requesting from which could explain delays.

I had no clue about KINE2011 either, and I ended up including it as the prerequisite for McMaster. I just assumed it was accepted since every other school does. And I thought it was a good idea to include it in the prerequisites because it was fairly difficult and I got an A+.

I even took ANAT100 Online at Queens which is included in the approved courses, but that course was a joke compared to KINE2011. And in ANAT100 we barely covered any "areas relevant to SLP", it's  literally something that you can learn in a few hours or less (some superficial info on oral cavity structures and larynx as part of the digestive & respiratory system). It's just silly.

Oh well, it was a long shot for me anyway, I guess I just donated 100 bucks to McMaster ?

Nothing of substance to add but here to agree that KINE 2011 was the worst ? I still don't know how I got such a good grade.

Anyone else from York applying to McMaster? I find it ridiculous how they're the only school that doesn't accept KINE 2011 Human Physiology as satisfying the human anatomy/physiology prerequisite because it doesn't include an area on speech and hearing. Instead, they suggest NATS 1675 Human Development whose syllabus doesn't even indicate a section on speech and hearing. Debating if I should still apply regardless.

woah, I'm from york and not applying to McMaster but had no clue they aren't accepting KINE 2011 as a pre requisite. It's especially bizarre considering how U of T and Western accept it. Do they accept KINE 2031 Human Anatomy? I know McMaster cares more about your subGPA and the pre requisites are there as a requirement that just need to be fulfilled but I have no clue if they'd still consider your application without an acceptable course that falls under that pre req. Your application may look incomplete. I can see Human Development is the only course from York that they suggest on the chart they have on their website but did you clear this with their graduate student affairs/ whoever the appropriate contact would be? It's weird they didn't include Human Anatomy on that chart either because one of the instructors who teaches that course also teaches Human Development which is a more watered down version of Human Anatomy as far as what my friend has told me.

My friend who applied last cycle had only taken KINE 2011 and she applied to McMaster without an issue. No clue if this is something they recently implemented ?

    Hi everyone,

I'm really contemplating if it's even worth applying to SLP with a 3.6 GPA... has anyone ever gotten in with a 3.6?

I'd suggest looking at some of the older threads. From what I can remember in the past it was possible to get into Western with a 3.6 but I think it may be harder now as they've become so inundated with applications. I also believe it's possible to get into University of Alberta too from what I've seen on older threads! But others can attest to this. I don't want to be a downer or discourage anyone at all, but as of last cycle I did not know anyone who got into UofT with a GPA under 3.8 (this doesn't mean it isn't possible, simply just an anecdotal remark on my behalf). Both friends of mine who had a 3.7 were waitlisted at UofT and did not hear back. With a 3.6, I think it may be more difficult to get into UofT, McMaster, Dalhousie, and McGill. It would be worth trying with UofA and Western.

Same here! My reference hasn't submitted yet. :( When do you think its appropriate to send a follow-up email? I don't want to rush her but I'm getting pretty anxious.

I was thinking of sending a reminder email tomorrow because someone told me that's when many profs come back from break. Not sure if that's entirely true since I'm not currently in university right now.

Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well as we near the end. I was just wondering how many people/who did you ask to review your personal statement? I asked a few friends but haven't really gotten constructive feedback. Wondering who else to ask.....

I had some close friends look at it too and their feedback was more by word of mouth. I had a friend who applied last cycle that went through my entire personal statement and wrote detailed comments and tore into it like I wanted someone to. I also had a current SLP student and a friend applying this cycle have a look at it too. They gave me some pretty helpful comments as well. So overall I had around 5 people look at it. If you'd like someone to give detailed feedback I could have a look at it for you if you like. Feel free to message me!

    Hi everyone,

Is anyone else waiting for their references to submit? I am getting extremely anxious as it is nearing the application deadline but most profs are still on holiday break

Yes, I am. I keep looking to see if they've submitted yet but nope. The only reference submitted is my personal one and she did so in November, bless her soul. Apparently, it's common for professors to submit their references pretty last minute. I'm also getting kinda anxious with the deadline approaching. That and the fact that the more I look at my personal statement the more I grow to hate it. Help

    Hi,

Is anyone including their volunteer experiences under personal submissions on ORPAS for UofT and Western? I know both programs have mentioned that they won't be considering that information so I'm wondering if there is any point.

If you are, are you strictly mentioning your volunteer experiences with an SLP? I have volunteer experience helping ESL students with their English language development and comprehension skills but I'm not sure if this would be relevant.

    Thanks!

I made sure to include my volunteer experiences under personal submissions because I don't think it could hurt and we weren't necessarily discouraged from doing this, at least this is the impression I got from Western. I included directly relevant volunteer experiences ( eg. shadowing an slp, directly working with individuals with swallowing and communications difficulties) and ones that weren't since they give us the option to add both in the drop down bar. Some of my volunteer hours that weren't related included things like helping out in a kindergarten classroom, tutoring young kids, leadership roles etc. I remember Janet mentioned that you could also put things down like if you were a camp counsellor and other similar volunteer positions. So yes, I would honestly include what you're considering adding since it sounds a lot more relevant than you think!

Hi everyone, has anyone who's applying to Western noticed something weird with the prerequisites? It says half credit for human anatomy/physiology but it lets you enter more than one.

I remember this was asked at western's professional day event (can't remember the proper name for it lol). Janet confirmed this was a glitch in the system on ORPAS.
