  1. Just saw someone saying they did 90 hours / week in Bioinformatics PHD during the summer. I just wanted to confirm what the experience for you guys? I know that phd is supposed to stretch your limits, but I just wanted to hear other people experiences.

  3. If you are not going to do master, I think you can try work as research assistant?
  4. Didn't apply to umichigan stats phd, but got into umichigan biostats. I am just curious, I know that they are "fairly equal" programs, but I am just wondering how does someone pick which one of them, if they want to focus on applied research or something related to machine learning?
  5. I found the applicant profiles and admission results over previous years to be helpful while selecting the schools I chose to apply to, and now seems like a good time to start the thread for this year. Copy the template below and fill in as much info as you would like. Keep in mind that you can't edit your post for very long after posting, so it may be good to wait until you have most of your results before posting. Here are some links to threads from previous years: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021. Below is the template: Undergrad Institution: (School or type of school (such as Big state/Lib Arts/Ivy/Technical/Foreign (Country?)) Major(s): Minor(s): GPA: Type of Student: (Domestic/International (Country?), Male/Female?, Minority?) GRE General Test: Q: xxx (xx%) V: xxx (xx%) W: x.x (xx%) GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: M: xxx (xx%) TOEFL Score: (xx = Rxx/Lxx/Sxx/Wxx) (if applicable) Grad Institution: (school or type of school?) Any publications or conference talks etc...) Awards/Honors/Recognitions: (Within your school or outside?) Pertinent Activities or Jobs: (Such as tutor, TA, etc...) Letters of Recommendation: (what kinds of professors? "well-known" in field? etc.) Math/Statistics Grades: (calculus sequence, mathematical statistics, probability, real analysis etc.) Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: (Such as connections, grad classes, etc...) 6. Quick question, what schools that if they don't give you interview, you are pretty much rejected for statistics and biostatistics? Thanks!
  7. Hey there! Thanks for starting the thread! Which schools have already sent out interviews? Thanks
  8. I wrote "Rice A&M" and "Baylor A&M". I already submitted the sop, but emailed the admissions. This is for the statistics PhD programs.
  9. Thanks! Do you just put the reu on the school's application's research experience? How do you get the fee waiver? Thanks!
  10. Just looking, I know that TAMU stats phd program give fee waivers for domestic applicants.
  11. Hi! I was wondering if I should sumbit my GRE score considering that the majority of statistics and biostatistics probably recommends sending GRE score? My gre score was Quant: 167. Verbal 159, AWA: 4.0
  12. Hi all, I retook the GRE and got 326 (167 quant and 159 V). This is unofficial score, but I want to know if this is sufficient for some of the biostatistics schools? Thank you
  13. Not the OP, but I am stats phd applying for fall 2022. Is one semester of Real analysis (no measure theory, but used rudin) enough if I took bunch of other math classes? Thanks
  14. Hello, I have an question regarding letter of recommendation. I just finish my semester, and I am nearly about to apply graduate programs for biostatistics and statistics. Is it advisable to ask my real analysis professor (took it in Fall 2020/ A) for letter of recommendation over the Complex Analysis (Spring 2021 / A-)? I was asking this question, because I was wondering if graduate programs want to see letter of recommendation from real analysis, or classes you took recently? I say both professors know me well equally, but I already asked the real analysis professor for REU, so it is proper to ask him again.
  15. @trynagetby @bayessays Thank for advice! What would be some good "safety schools" that I can look into.
  16. Student Type: Domestic Asian male with severe hearing loss Applying for: Biostats / Stats PhD Fall 2022 Undergrad: UT Austin Major: Mathematics with certificates in computer science and statistics GPA: 3.90 overall and 3.9580 in major Math: Calc I and II (AP credit), Calc 3(A), discrete math (A), probability (A), ODE (A-), intro to number theory (A), proof linear algebra (A), Real Analysis I (A), intro to stochastic process (A), intro to math stats (A), Math learning assistant experience (A), numerical analysis (A), Complex analysis ( currently taking- High B or low A), PDE (A) CS: intro to programming (A), data structures and algos for non cs majors (A-), elements of data base(A), elements of data analytics(data mining) (A), graphics and visuals (A) Research - Statistics REU at Texas state, and incoming reu at Emory. Work Experience: grader and learning assitant each for one semester, but not anymore GRE: 163 Q, 156 V, 4.5 AW ( WILL RETAKE) Letter of Recommendation: I will probably ask the professors at the two reu, and one of the math professors I took class under. I think they will be medicore or fine. Questions: Any advice for improvements? I am only decided on applying to UT, TAMU, and Rice. I am unsure on what other schools to apply to. Is the next semester course load of applied regression, applied statistics, and elements of software engineering okay? Any other courses should I take? I am really interested in machine learning and data science related fields, but I am unsure on what to study in graduate school. Thank you!
