I am waiting to hear from Texas schools before committing to Michigan.
  2. I found the applicant profiles and admission results over previous years to be helpful while selecting the schools I chose to apply to, and now seems like a good time to start the thread for this year. Copy the template below and fill in as much info as you would like. Keep in mind that you can't edit your post for very long after posting, so it may be good to wait until you have most of your results before posting.

Here are some links to threads from previous years: 20132014201520162017201820192020, 2021.

You should already get invited to interview with top biostatistics program like UW, Harvard, and JHU.

If your thesis advisor really likes you, it pretty much guaranteed for you to get UChicago's offer.

I am little surprised, as you indicated your interest in statistical genetics, but Michigan (the power house of statistical genetics) isn't in your application list.

    Good luck with your application.

Quick question, what schools that if they don't give you interview, you are pretty much rejected for statistics and biostatistics?

    Thanks!

I also attended the statistics REU at Texas State. A surprising number of schools gave me a fee waiver just for participating in an REU summer program. It literally saved me hundreds of dollars. I can search around and see if I stored a list of schools that did this.

Thanks! Do you just put the reu on the school's application's research experience? How do you get the fee waiver?

    Thanks!

All of these schools have at least one of a stats phd/biostat phd/math phd with stats focus.  Success may vary by school and some will have stricter requirements, but I've gotten a ton of free apps this way.

Absolutely, especially for a domestic student.  For lower-ranked programs, it wouldn't necessarily even be the end of the world if you didn't have real analysis.  But OP has essentially no theoretical math background, which is why these programs are not just unlikely but impossible given his current profile.

    Thank you!

The major problem in your profile is your weak math background. At the minimum, you would need two semesters of real analysis and/or some other proof-based courses. However, I don't see any proof-based courses in your profile. The actuarial science program at Waterloo is intended for people who wanna become an actuary. Unfortunately, the mathematical training you obtained from the program is not enough for you to apply for statistics PhD. You would've been better off if you majored in pure math/applied math/CO. However, if you can make up the required mathematical background, you will not be at a disadvantage when it comes to admission. If you could take a few courses in real analysis/measure theory and get A's in them, then you might have a chance at some of the top 50's such as CSU/FSU/Iowa. You should also have a good shot at Waterloo. Given your math background, I wouldn't suggest you take the math GRE subject test. Only if you have had most of the pure math courses should you consider taking the test.

Not the OP, but I am stats phd applying for fall 2022. Is one semester of Real analysis (no measure theory, but used rudin) enough if I took bunch of other math classes?

    Thanks

  8. Hello, I have an question regarding letter of recommendation.

I just finish my semester, and I am nearly about to apply graduate programs for biostatistics and statistics.

Is it advisable to ask my real analysis professor (took it in Fall 2020/ A) for letter of recommendation over the Complex Analysis (Spring 2021 / A-)?

I was asking this question, because I was wondering if graduate programs want to see letter of recommendation from real analysis, or classes you took recently?

I say both professors know me well equally, but I already asked the real analysis professor for REU, so it is proper to ask him again.

  9. Student Type: Domestic Asian male with severe hearing loss

Applying for: BiostatsStats PhD Fall 2022

    Undergrad: UT Austin

Major: Mathematics with certificates in computer science and statistics

GPA: 3.90 overall and 3.9580 in major

Math: Calc I and II (AP credit), Calc 3(A), discrete math (A), probability (A), ODE (A-), intro to number theory (A), proof linear algebra (A), Real Analysis I (A), intro to stochastic process (A), intro to math stats (A), Math learning assistant experience (A), numerical analysis (A), Complex analysis ( currently taking- High B or low A), PDE (A)

CS: intro to programming (A), data structures and algos for non cs majors (A-), elements of data base(A), elements of data analytics(data mining) (A), graphics and visuals (A)

Research - Statistics REU at Texas state, and incoming reu at Emory.

Work Experience: grader and learning assitant each for one semester, but not anymore

    GRE: 163 Q, 156 V, 4.5 AW ( WILL RETAKE)

Letter of Recommendation: I will probably ask the professors at the two reu, and one of the math professors I took class under. I think they will be medicore or fine.

Questions: Any advice for improvements? I am only decided on applying to UT, TAMU, and Rice. I am unsure on what other schools to apply to. Is the next semester course load of applied regression, applied statistics, and elements of software engineering okay? Any other courses should I take? I am really interested in machine learning and data science related fields, but I am unsure on what to study in graduate school.

    Thank you!
