I just got an update saying I was waitlisted at U of Toronto for the advanced standing MSW! I only applied for the Health and Mental Health stream. Does not feel as good as being accepted, but there is hope! Good luck to everyone else! If anyone who got an offer to U of T thinks they might not be attending U of T, can you let us know or if you know you will be declining your offer.
Received my acceptance to Carleton's advanced standing msw earlier today! I'll wait for the other schools to see but it was my first choice so I think I will be accepting there.
Sure! I share them with caution as I don’t want for folks to feel discouraged or be compelled to compare - I am not sure which parts of my application may have been more heavily weighted in the decision and I am aware that my stats and level of experience may be much less (or more) than other applicants with different outcomes.
I’ll be graduating with my BSW this year (so applied to Advanced Standing - I am not a 2-year applicant) and at the time of application had an 11.3 GPA on a 12.0 scale. Not sure what the specific percentage is, but it's in the A or high 80s range. In terms of experience, I did 780 hours between 2 BSW practicums that were split between a macro role in research and programming, followed by a micro practice counselling role in the VAW sector. I also had around 400 hours employed as an intake worker for a counselling agency and around 350 hours in research assistant-ships. Total hours on my CV - including non-social work related - was about 3000 hours. My references were a professor in the School of Social Work at my university who taught me in two courses and my two different BSW placement field instructors, both who are RSWs.
If anyone is hearing news that was not what they were hoping or are feeling discouraged, please be gentle with yourself. A rejection or waitlist is not reflective that you are not suitable for this program or field - it is merely indicative that the admissions committee was unable to equally measure the capabilities of all their applicants. Wishing everyone well!
