I had two interviews, one as a finalist at Brooklyn College. I looked up Brooklyn in last year's results and saw that some people were waitlisted after the interview and others accepted, so I was really nervous. I emailed Brooklyn to get an idea of the kinds of questions to prepare for, and they wrote back that they just wanted to get to know me. (Elizabeth McCracken re the PS -- they "just want to make sure you're not crazy.") The interview was brisk but very warm and informal. They asked questions that were tailored to me. They said nice things about my writing sample. I asked my questions. After half an hour, the interview ended. I left with a really good impression of Brooklyn College. I would pass that along to the rest of you. When you speak to the director, you get a real vibe about whose hands you're in. Yes, I kicked myself afterwards for talking too much, but this whole application process is helping me understand that the personal touch via interview or whatever is very important to me. So is genuineness -- not over-selling on their side or mine. They just want to know we're not crazy, guys. I also zoomed with a school where I'm waitlisted. It wasn't an official interview, just an opportunity for questions. It was similarly very warm and informal and it was untimed. I was also very impressed with the school. Although it does have teaching assistantships, there were no questions from them about teaching philosophy. It's their job to train the assistants to teach, after all. Hope this helps. My general feeling -- if you get to the interview, prepare, of course, go for a run before the interview to settle your nerves, and then relax. You've already come really far.

Thank you. Yes, very excited. I like the way Brooklyn handled me -- quick note that I was a finalist, immediate zoom interview, openness and honesty, so receptive to my writing and my personal case. My other acceptance so far (which shall remain nameless) was the opposite, kind of cool.

Just got the phone call - accepted at Brooklyn. Have you heard anything from the other NY schools? I haven't heard a peep. I expect they're coming really soon.

Thanks for letting us know. That's helpful. Were you accepted at FSU in poetry? I'm waitlisted there in fiction.

All the best to you @RosA-R. Fingers crossed for you from me here. I'll update you as I know. (Thinking CCNY is so big they might contact CNF and fiction at different times.) It's been a while, but I'd be really glad to return to my hometown, NYC.

I know. Here I am awake at 2:30 am. I'm too new to this process to know what it means that the NY schools are taking this long. But I've scoured the Results, and can't find anyone else who's heard. I did get an email from Brooklyn saying I was a finalist and inviting me for an interview, which I'm doing in a few days. I believe it's a screening interview, I mean consequential, but it's not quite presented that way. Trying to figure out how to be myself and do my best all at the same time. Did you apply to Brooklyn and Queens? If I get in to Brooklyn I'm going to be really happy and ready to rest.

Hi all -- 15 days and counting. I was rejected by 4 top MFA fiction programs last year and am trying to be more personal and strategic in my choice of schools now. My writing sample this year is a little more hard-edge than the killer (I thought) lyricism of last year's. Any further insights than have already been posted into the selection process or odds, or quality of instruction or community at these schools? New York: Brooklyn College, Queens College, CCNY, Sarah Lawrence, Bard Maryland/Virginia: University of Maryland, George Mason, Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia Pennsylvania: University of Pittsburgh New Mexico: Institute of American Indian Arts (low-res) Indiana: Bloomington West coast: U Oregon, U Washington, UC Irvine I'm particularly interested in your views on the fiction MFA at Pitt. Thanks much.
