  1. I've asked this before, but.. anyone heard from UCSB BMSE or UCSD/SDSU JDP?
  2. Stanford has admission rates of 3% or lower across all bioscience programs (domestic and local together), so I didn't dare imagine the acceptance rates for internationals
  3. They sent me this email today: "We will be sending out invitations by February. "
  4. That's super interesting. My research was in biophysics, but I wrote my statements pivoting towards interests like virology, microbiology etc because I want to move away from biophysics and towards cell/molecular biology. I think my statements might be weak for that reason, but I really didn't want to write a statement about a subject I no longer want to pursue.
  5. I haven't received any interview invitations (yet?) so it remains to be seen if my approach worked, but I looked up the specific admission rates for internationals at each place before deciding whether or not to apply. For schools that didn't provide a breakdown rate for internationals, i just estimated it by halving their usual acceptance rate. Some resources: https://nglscoalition.org/coalition-data/#close https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/doctoral-program You can also find those stats on the individual uni's page sometimes.
  6. Please forgive me if this is a silly suggestion but... is there any possibility they could have made a mistake? Like a simple admin error?
  7. Has anyone heard from the UCSB BMSE (biomolecular science and engineering) program? Deadline was Dec 15th but haven't heard anything since then and they didn't respond to my email asking if interview invitations had been sent out. Undergrad Institution (approx. rank/reputation in STEM): Oxford Major(s): Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular) Minor(s): NA GPA in Major: 3.5/4.00 approx Overall GPA: same ^ Demographics/Background: international, asian, lgbt etc GRE Scores: Did not take LOR: 1 from Masters project PI, 1 from a short undergrad summer internship Research Experience: Um... see above. Very little Publications/Abstracts/Presentations/Awards/Honors/Recognitions/Fellowships/Funding: Basically none, except some funding from my college (St Hilda's) for part of my undergrad/grad projects (see above) Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Also none, to be honest - none directly related to hands-on research Other Miscellaneous Accomplishments: Literally irrelevant Anything else in your application that might matter (faculty connections, etc.): PI for my masters project is a famous biophysicist, but I have no connections within specific US university faculties. Research Interests: Bioengineering, biomolecular/cell biology (kind of straddling both) Institutions/Programs: UCSB, UCSD + SDSU joint program, USC Comments:
  8. Fellow USC PIBBS applier here. Haven't heard from them. Applied to USC a two weeks before the deadline and then scrambled in a revised personal statement on Dec 14th.
  9. I think your background looks great! Just wait a bit and it will all be fine, I think.
  10. International student here, anybody heard from USC Keck PIBBS, UCSB BMSE, or UCSD/SDSU Cell Mol Bio? Stats: Oxford Uni B.S./M.S. Biochemistry, GPA 3.5 equivalent, very little research experience but I can say I've tried. Very nervous about USC as it's become my fave program, but all these programs had later deadlines - USC was 12/8, UCSB 12/15, UCSD/SDSU 12/22 so I'm not sure when they will send out interview invites. Fingers crossed!
  11. I got in touch with the postdoc who mentored me. She basically sent me a draft of my LOR, so now at least I know what I did....
  12. have considered, very hard to find funding in the UK for international students. I believe the deadlines are also later in the year, I will look into it, thanks for the reminder.
  13. @escriva73 Wow I have nothing but total and complete respect for you and your tenacity in furthering your career and working in HIV research. This is my first time applying too so I don't know the details, but I'm wishing for the best for you!
  14. Hi! I don't know the acceptance rates but they do sponsor international students for some programs. The stipend given to international students is lower than it is for locals, but it's liveable. For NUS, check out this page: https://nusgs.nus.edu.sg/scholarships/ For Duke-NUS, google the Integrated biology and medicine program. Good luck!
  15. Thanks! Will do. Have expanded my list to include 4-5 more German PhD programs.
  16. Hi hi - I think you are in the wrong section of the grad forum. This is the biological sciences section...
  17. Sadly no publications. Reference letters: one from my PI, one from my tutor who hasn't observed me in a research context but taught me for four years." I've changed my list to lower-risk unis: UCSB, UCI, Scripps, one program in Germany, and one in Singapore. Your thoughts?
  18. Hi everyone, I'm applying for fall 2022... already posted this on the international page but hoping someone can help me out here since that thread isn't very active at all. I need help with evaluating my profile. I'm not sure if I'm a competitive enough applicant for the schools I'm applying for. Schools applying for: UCSF, Scripps, UC Davis, UCSB Undergrad: University of Oxford, MBiochem (master of biochemistry, 4 year undergraduate masters), marks 62% (low end of upper second, a first class is 70%) - Yes you only need 70% to get the top grade in a UK university Research experience: Molecular biophysics - 6 months in a lab doing my masters research, wrote up an 8000 word dissertation.. and one 2 month internship in 2nd year of which i remember absolutely nothing except that i read harry potter during breaks in between experiments. Interested in: virology, immunology, cancer biology Type of student: International, LGBT, chinese singaporean, female Irrelevant but interesting: I've lived in both Wales and Boston before I have limited research experience. Do you think my profile is unsuitable for the unis I've applied? What other places could I consider to lower my risk of being rejected? Should I apply to Duke Cornell WUSTL UChicago etc? I'm not inclined to as I don't think I'll get in, but would like other perspectives. Thanks in advance :))
  19. Helloo everyone. I'm doing fall admissions. Anyone else?
  20. Are you relying on funding from the university? Here are some unis that fully fund international students for PhD in biosciences: I put their acceptance rates in (%) Duke - 9% (int’l) Cornell - 20% (all) Harvard - 17% (all) UChicago - 18% (all) Scripps - 22% (all) Washington St Louis - 20% (all) UCSF - 9% (all)
  21. Hi all :) I'm applying too. If anyone viewing this thread has applied before, I need help with evaluating my profile.
