According to the International Council of Graduate Schools, member institutions are required by mandate to give a Graduate Applicant their admission and funding offer by the 15th of April. From what I gather, if you applied but were not offered admission then affiliates are not mandated to inform you of anything at all. It seems that offering an applicant a rejection letter is a courtesy that differs by academic institution. It is called the "April 15th Resolution Date." The University of California at Santa Barbara, as well as Columbia are both signatory schools of the council and are mandated to inform you by April 15th that you have been accepted and what your funding will be. I don't know if they are flexible about it or if the situation is affected by being waitlisted. All I know are the CGS rules that are outlined on their site. Does an applicant have to accept summer, winter, or spring admission by april 15th? "The April 15 Resolution only applies to offers of financial support for academic year offers beginning in Fall term. Admission to graduate programs that start in the Winter, Spring, or Summer terms are not bound by the resolution." There are a few people that are still on the fence about USC Roski because of the cost. I've found a couple of resources and opportunities that would help to inform you if you would like to have them. Not sure if the resources will tip the scale, but if they have the potential to take some of the sting out of admission costs, I would be happy to share. Otherwise, there are other opportunities and scholarships out there that aren't directly from USC but offered to Arts and Humanities students that are easy to dig up. I've shared with a few of you, but if we haven't talked about it feel free to DM me if interested within the next few days and I'll send you a couple links. Right now, more than ever, society needs our artwork and practice and energy. We are coming out of an ugly and confrontational time in our recent history where we have to start rebuilding and creating beautiful things that are good for the people and geared toward social justice and equality/equity. Like always, the onus falls on the Artists, Music, Literature, Screen, Stage, and Humanities to lead the way. (And we will generate revenue for ourselves while doing it). If you don't think we have power, take a look at who fascists and oppressors kill first during times of darkness. We give the people a voice. Let's be leaders. Let's elevate ourselves and one another. Let's hold one another to account, and also be supportive and tolerant. It looks like all the admissions situations are either wrapped up or closing very quickly, and I don't see the need to keep patronizing The GradCafe beyond March. This joint has been a daily thing for me for the past 3 months and I've enjoyed interacting with everyone while sharing your worries, strengths, hopes, art, and life stories in the DM's and otherwise. You've all given me strength. It's encouraging to see so many happy young people moving in the direction of creativity and working in the programs they want to serve the best they can. This is an internet forum, it's not an artist statement. Don't really care about grammar. As Chicanos, we are a small slice of society, insular, even. It's why I create art from that perspective. If other people have criticisms or don't like what I do, KOOL! I'm glad that individuals have their own perspectives, this includes people who don't like me. Do others minimize or marginalize me for having opinions about my art? Heck no. I do this for me and my familia and gente. I'm rubber, you're glue. Whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you. CHILDREN ARE WISE and we can learn from them. I've never been unsupportive toward "members." What I've done is ask questions of anonymous avatars posting unsubstantiated claims that deserve rigorous and thorough investigation. OR, at the vey least, a shred of proof. See, I'm a social justice warrior, Anti Fascist, Chicano, and proud of it all. I didn't create a life for myself and become a success by believing what people tell me without proof. It's a little discouraging seeing anyone online accepting something as fact, hook line and sinker, with no proof. You see that in the Qnonymous insurrectionists who attacked democracy on 6th. You see that in all the Soviet propaganda on the internet. I'm down to elevate any minority, but I'm not a chump and will definitely ask some rugged questions if I feel that more information is needed. It's troubling that you will believe any anonymous poster on the internet just because it fits your narrative. This is a good discussion to have. It's positive, and productive, and I'm glad future posters will get to read it.

This forum has a secret power where you can ignore people. I even have that power in REAL LIFE! It's easy to be happy and make a better world for all. It's much more aggravating to be angry at everything and try to make the world into something that adheres to your standards, only. That's fascism, and I don't go for that. Can you please describe the types of disruption and bullying as well as the situations going on in your department at UW-Seattle? What does your faculty say about it? Has this feminist been reprimanded? If a woman chooses to advocate for naturally born women it doesn't mean that they are anti-trans. I don't actually know anyone who's anti-trans, but ones personal feelings about a very small slice of society shouldn't be the defining reason to judge them to be bullies, unless it's warranted and they are actually bullies. Despite what we feel, everyone cannot think the same as we do. Heck, I work with rednecks sometimes when I weld or work with metals or carpentry. Rednecks think in their own hokey way. Some love Trump. Who cares? They aren't me. I feel the way I do, they feel the way that rednecks do. And life goes on. Also, try to remember that these are Art programs, not elite clubs filled with untouchables that must adhere to the status quo where everyone must fall in line and believe in the same thing like a bunch of clones. Take a good look at how some of the finest artists felt about politics and society. Look up the political and social leanings of Orson Scott Card or Wagner or Leonardo Da Vinci. Artists are not perfect, FAR from it. How do you and your cohort at Seattle deal with this situation? Do you have rock-solid proof of your allegations of bullying and abuse within your department that can be cross-verified with staff, faculty, and the student body? If you do, then you can take it to the dean. If the dean sees something wrong then it should be dealt with, post-haste. If it's just a situation where a few people don't like another person and treats them badly because of the way they believe; that's called discrimination and bullying and slander. I really hope it's not all bad. Maybe it's just a case of needing something to do and minding their own business? Perhaps people can redirect their focus to where it should be, on their own art, instead of someone else's point of view. Please always remember the old adage: Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." It's real. Sometimes in life you just gotta do you and let other people do them. Please give details. I'm interested in what's going on at your school and I hope you guys have a positive way to direct your energies. I appreciate it.

Awww... I was kinda hoping you were gonna go to UCLA so I can go say hi to you from USC. I've grown to like a lot of you guys on here, even people I just meet. I always hope that people I talk to on GradCafe who are considering USC or other L.A./Southern California schools accept admission there so I could have some pals I already met already once I move back down. I know a few people in L.A. because I'm from San Diego, but I haven't lived down there in a long time. L.A. is definitely hectic. It's the edge of the world. That's cool you declined the offer to UCLA tho. You just made a wait-lister very happy! ?

You did, indeed, and I remember you did. As a matter of fact, my homeboy Nate who is a high-school teacher told me that I can start substituting with a Bachelors Degree alone, right now. I think I'm gonna do that in L.A. during grad-school. I'm gonna substitute at high-schools because it seems kool, and there's a grip of work and it pays okay for a grad student. With my post, I still want to teach kids for a little while, but I need to end up at the collegiate level. I corrected what I wrote. See? What would I even do without you correcting me up ?????

YUP! This seems to be the same with applicants across the board. COVID disrupted and ravaged academics from 2020 through present time and American colleges have decided to lower admissions standards for applicants from around the world. Because of this massive increase in demand and the decrease in supply, schools have cut stipends, grants, fellowships, and many other perks. Not just that but they've significantly reduced admission rates in every subject. link--->As Applications to Colleges Skyrocket, Acceptance Rates Dip<---link If you look at prior years on the GradCafe there have been WAY better seasons for admissions and perks, by far. From most people I've been private messaging on the board, this year has been pretty sucky, especially for those who have applied more than once. There are artists who are in their 5th and 6th application season who have been admitted to colleges in the past but continue to put off admission in hopes for a better deal next year, and some of them not only didn't get a better deal this year but didn't get admitted anywhere at all and I'd wager that it has something to do with the schools lowering admissions standards and that encouraging everyone to apply. The schools now have more options, and sometimes much better options at grad just by encouraging applicants in general. If I were an admissions counselor at high school or community college I would tell an applicant to try to negotiate with financial aid, but if loans are all you've got and you've got a solid plan that you intend to follow through with then you should take the loans and attend grad at the school that takes you because its just going to get even more competitive over time, especially since Harvard has dedicated that it is keeping admission standards low for the next 4 years, no matter what. All colleges follow Harvard so expect that rule to be adopted by everyone. Seems like it's just going to get exceptionally more competitive over the next 2-4 years. link--->A Competitive Year for Grad Students<---link I, like several other students, lucked out with admissions to top tier school like USC, others were admitted to programs in the same vein like Stanford, RISD, UCLA, and Fresno Community College. Personally, I think the lowering of academic standards is a good thing in the arts because the art world in the United States has become FAR too academic, philosophical, political, tedious, and condescending for its own good. The quality of American art is terrible right now, just AWFUL. For every 100+ pieces of straight up shitty art I see, there is one that I think has merit and is done well. You can't just throw dirt in a corner, fill a pair of women's pantyhose with cotton, then stare into a camera looking grim and expect that to have any impact or weight to the working class people we create art for. And if you aren't creating art for the working class people, who are you making it for? Yourself? Other academics? The privledged and wealthy? The New York art gallery leisure class scene? Hi gang. I got picked up by the University of Southern California and decided to accept admission and pay my admission fee. I've been working towards USC for a couple years and the USC Roski program was my 1st choice by miles, so I'm completely satisfied with this years outcome. I'm excited to begin my hunt for grants and scholarships. Anyone else up in here choosing USC??? Let's talk.

Yup. The USC interview was way different this year. It was less structured and I felt compelled to really lean in on them about the cash situation, especially with COVID going on. This round it wasn't the whole gang. It was Jennifer, Ruben, Thomas, and Keith. No Edgar, and Nao is still on sabbatical. Nao is the homegirl. She's been really helpful and kind to me. Jennifer gave good funding advice, and they wanted to know what I've been up to. USC and L.A. are definitely where I'd like to be, but they're gonna have to kick down some REAL money this time around. Every other mid-range art school out there like Bard or UCI or VCU are funded with stipends. USC has a MASSIVE endowment in the MULTIPLE BILLIONS of dollars. Surely they can find a way to fully fund students being that they are an "elite" level school, or whatever. If USC can't do better then I'm gonna wait a year and take my skills to San Diego State University. It would hurt because I've been counting on USC for a year and a half and have got to know the school and faculty intimately. But SDSU is great. Both my parents went to San Diego State, and I love SD. Who doesn't? Creators can learn skills anywhere, but getting the most out of grad school as a visual artist is ALL about location location location, period. My big thing this year is gonna be about moving back to Southern Califas. I've had it with Sacramento and Northern California in general. After April I'm gonna start milling around for some more public art projects down south. Ya knoe... Years before this, like last year even; people and programs felt energetic and exciting. This year it's all low energy and blahhh... I haven't seen anyone in these programs I'd be particularly excited to work with, and the professors haven't done much worth entertaining. Potential students artworks haven't exactly been top shelf this season, either. I was just rejected at UCSD and I tried hard to feel upset about it. I even wrote them an email, but I just don't care. Maybe it's just me? I dunno. What if COVID's got me so down that I don't even realize I'm depressed? C'MON USC! KICK DOWN SOME GREEN AND LET'S MAKE SOME FUKIN HISTORY!

That happened with me at UCI as far as my recommender not sending my LOR in on time. I let UCI know what happened but haven't heard anything from them. If it was me I'd let my recommender know and then let UCSD know what happened ASAP. Which professors are doing the interviews this year at USC? What did you like about the interview? Did it go long?

You can tell all your UCSD buddies that you know the guy who did that Zapata sculpture. I'm seriously SERIOUSLY excited for you. Got my USC (University of Southern California) interview tomorrow morning. Anyone else going for USC Roski??? I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anyone talk about Roski considering the caliber of their program and the city they're in. I didn't think I'd feel nervous, but I kinda do. It's prob because I've been following this group of professors for a few years now and talking to them again as a group is a trip because I feel like I know what they've been up to, intimately, but we don't hang out. Ahhh... It's gonna be fine. The USC faculty are fabuloso. ?????

As frustrating as it gets, patience is always the best route in just about anything. March isn't that far away, so fill the time with doing life. Make art, chase girls or guys around for romance, skateboard, play ping-pong, buy Rosetta Stone and learn a new language, creep the forums and start a political argument... Tons to do. These learning institutions aren't unbreachable towers of gilded ivory, and the professors aren't gods among men who are too good to be bothered. These are schools where people are teachers and we paid a friggin $125 dollar fee to be considered and another $10 bucks to upload our art. NONE of these ultra-wealthy universities, especially Stanford, (where I also applied), should be charging students a crime dime for an application. Yes, there are waivers, but it still shouldn't be a thing. If someone applies for a job, the expectation is that the applicant will be interested in the position enough to call or drop an email to check in with the potential employer. In our situation, we are hiring THE SCHOOL. We are paying THEM tuition, fees, etc... It's a symbiosis, mutual aid. It's your money, it's your time. If you feel like checking in, then do it. If a school is SOOO precious, SOOO above us that it collapses under the weight of an email or phone call then you don't want to go there anyway. Telling potential MFA people not to contact the department is lame and pretentious and boring. It probably has nothing to do with the professors concentrating on the applications and everything to do with creating tension and marketing and busywork. Or... OR OR OR, maybe there's no big scary secret-society after all we just have to wait it out and be patient because that's how it goes. ??? Yes, it's frustrating. LOL! For reference, I've directly contacted every school I've ever been admitted to from the UC to CSU to private educational institutions and it doesn't seem to have hurt because, hey, I was admitted. Funny thing is, the schools that I did NOT contact refused me admission. Granted, I didn't want to go to those schools, anyway, tho. If you hit up the school just treat them like a potential employee. Be the kind and honest and respectful professional that you are and they will respect you! ?

Sup gangsters. USC, (University of Southern California) Roski interviews are going out. I got mine this week. I hope they offer better funding this year. I've taken on painting, over the past few months. Been doing Hopi and Apache inspired canvasses. I've also enjoyed studying the way that color patterns develop on southwestern desert rock, and how it can look a lot like rust. I've also been working in the world of animated gifs. I've always made them, but lately I've really been trying some new directions. Kinda wish I would have started earlier so I could have put them on my art resumés. Tomorrow I'll be back in the sculpture shop/studio working metal. Got an unveiling for my pubic art coming up soon. I'll post some pix when the pieces are installed in a couple weeks! ?

"I understand the desire for more information." Do you? If someone wants anyone to believe anything then there must be evidence and accountability. Literally the lowest bar out there. This is a board for MASTERS degree student applicants and evidence should never be up for debate for educated people, otherwise education is not education. This man, "Cmusurvivor," posted back in December talking about all these things he allegedly went through with Carnegie Mellon. Again, no evidence and anonymous. I asked him for evidence to support his claim. He attacked me personally. I was contacted by a "mysterious stranger" who informed me of who this man is, what the situation was/is, and the institutions that he operates in back east, and even here in Southern California. I didn't take it for face value, so I did some digging on my own and found the information to be accurate. For all I know, the email could have been from him for some reason. What it boils down to is an individual who has access to student bodies at several educational institutions from the eastern, to the western United States, and influence over the students. If this person feels that it is okay to make statements without proof, then that absolutely reflects on his modus operandi with regards to higher education pedagogy. I know who the guy is, and if he reads this then he will know that I know who he is. I'm never going to throw him under the bus and "out" him because I'm not a punk ass bitch like that. I remain firmly tethered to reality in that that the claims that he is leveling against CMU must be backed by verifiable evidence and must be done by an individual willing to make that public sacrifice no matter what the outcome. If these basic criteria cannot be met then right or wrong there is no basis to believe the claim/claims made by this man. As a Chicano Public Art Activist, I stand against fascism, hatred, and the 1% supremacy every single day, and I'm loud about it. I do it in the public gallery and people know who I am and where I live. I'm on the side of good, on the side of God, and have zero to fear from any man because my path is just and I have a long record of doing the right thing. That's not a very high bar for me to expect of others. I've talked enough with this guy and his sock accounts. This is energy that I don't want to entertain. I've reiterated my piece and I'm over it.
