  1. That's rad. I didn't know it worked that way. It's a good idea to have students in on the process.
  2. What kind of first hand proof and evidence do you have that CMU is a bad university? Please drop some serious knowledge about your experience, as well as who you are. No one who posts anonymously about something so heavy such as smearing an entire department, again, and without any first-hand evidence again, online, should be believed about anything whatsoever whether they are from Sacto, or Blacksburg, or Philly, or the City of Lost Men, yadda yadda yadda... Two friends of mine are CMU applicants, so in order to pass on peer reviewed information to them I'm gonna need some legit evidence from you please. And it should come from a real person, not a robotronic. Should be no problem since you feel so deeply about it, enough to have several other bots doing the same thing on this forum. I'm willing to believe you. Just need some actual solid proof.
  3. I've heard nothing from University of California San Diego, either. I did get the obligatory financial aid emails from University of California Irvine and the University of Southern California. Couple days ago got an update from San Diego State University. Nothing at all from Stanford, tho. Maaaaaaaaaaan....... ??? COME OOOOON. JUST LET US IN. Lol! ?
  4. If you really want to go to SFSU, I'd appeal it. I was denied admission to UC Santa Cruz over some Mickey Mouse thing. Upon appeal I was offered admission to the University of California. Almost everything in academia has an appeal process. 5. Phone rings... Area code is 619!!! Could it be the UCSD MFA Dept??? Chill out, and, ANSWER THE FONE, ANSWER THE FONE, ANSWER THE FONE. Clears throat... *AHEM* (politely) - Hello? In robot-lady voice... "Hello. We have been trying to reach you regarding expired automobile warranty service." ???
  6. Indeed. A couple years ago I tried applying to an MFA program, but I didn't put in any LOR's and half-assed it, so I was not admitted. The next year I applied to one school and was admitted to the program I wanted, but funding was bad because I only applied there. This year I applied to a handful of universities and I'm waiting to hear back. I've seen a couple of the homies online get interviews at Stanford and UCI, where I also applied. That's rad, and I'm hoping for the same so I can make an informed decision with options, this time around. Like many of you I am stressed about it. I'm feeling the need to get going again. I've been practicing public art during COVID, but not so much with other artists, and I miss that. It's gonna be nice to get back into the world of other artists doing kool stuff, and earning my MFA along the way. I'm looking forward to being able to share MY knowledge and experience with other peeps. I'm curious about what types of artwork and artists people on this board are into. Anyone have any faves? I mentioned earlier that David Middlebrook is an artist I've looked up to for several years. I also like Jeff Koons, a lot, as far as big-shot artists go. I also really like artists within the Chicano Community like Yolanda López and Esteban Villa. What artists do all you forum gangstaz enjoy??? ?
  7. UC Santa Cruz is accepting till 11:59pm Pacific Time. I was admitted to UCSC and somewhat regret not attending. If you can bang out your app in like an hour, then do it. UCSC is fab. ¡¡¡ANDELE PUES!!! https://applygrad.ucsc.edu/apply/ Also available at the fabuloso CSU system are: CSU Fullerton MFA - 02/07/2022 Cal State LA MFA - 02/15/2022 CSU Northridge MFA - 02/01/2022 (Good school for Chicanos) Sacramento State MFA - 02/15/2022 (SHOUT-OUT TO MY ALMA MATER) CSU San Bernardino MFA - 02/15/2022 San Francisco State MFA - 02/01/2022 San Jose State MFA - 04/01/2022 (SJSU is RAD) One of my fave artists, David Middlebrook, is from there. David Middlebrook Art Gotta give love to my Cali institutions.
  8. I just knew they were gonna hit you up! Remember? That is so great. ?
  9. Just got an email from San Diego State University saying that my file is now "under evaluation." That makes me happy. San Diego is my home town and it would be kool to have the option of studying there. Still waiting on UCSD, UCI, Stanford, and scholarship opportunities from USC. Happy to see one artist got an interview at UCI. One of the reasons I chose to apply at Irvine is that they have a lot of community outreach to the Chicano, Latino community, their art faculty is tight, and their housing opportunities are great. Get it!
  10. I had to edit this to add a thing at the beginning. I just want to say I'm not trying to be bossy or tell you or anyone what to do. I hope I don't come off pushy when anyone reads this. LOL! ? Just be all, "yo, wherez my DOLLA DOLLA BILLZ!?!" JK! If they ask about your biggest fault, don't be like, "my biggest fault is that I work too hard." That's some bullshit, LOL!!! Honesty is a good thing. Tell the truth. You don't have to tell the WHOLE truth, tho. Like, don't tell them that your biggest fault is that you're a raging alcoholic who likes to steal just to see if you can get away with it. But I got a feeling if that's where someone is at then the main thing prob isn't applying to grad school. For reals, tho... I think it's wise to ask about things that are important to YOU and YOUR world. It's your future, be a little selfish about it. These cats are interviewing lots of peeps every year, and have been interviewed themselves mass times in the academic world. I think the best policy is to just be exactly who you are and ask about what matters to you because these folks have heard it all. Be the most Strawberry the Cat, ever! ? The other thing is that we're going to be repping for our cohort, professors, and bringing glory to our learning institutions. Because I'm a super hyper and high strung people-person, that idea gets me all pumped up. Don't hold back your enthusiasm. My enthusiasm is what gets me into crazy situations that shy people don't ever get to participate in. My enthusiasm makes other people want to engage in what I've got going on and be part of MY thing. They've already seen your art portfolio, you sold them on that. Now sell them on YOU. Be EAGER. And I know that you are up to it after seeing you here for a couple rounds. If the institution you're applying to gets you bouncing, then you will have no problem being exciting, being yourself. The reality about any kind of interview like this, whether it's a job or school, is that it's always about behavior and psychology. Is it about mad skillzorz? But of course. But these peeps want people who are all about it and getting on with the gang. When I conducted interviews as a floor manager I would look for people who could gel with the team and create good energy in the work environment. Everyone can make art, it's a fakt... But can everyone be interesting, be motivated, be outgoing, be crazy, be sane, make a grip of GOOD art all the time and STILL KICK ASS??? No, most people can't do that. That's why they want US to be at their school, because WE CAN do that and bring glory to the institution. To reiterate: As boring as it sounds, just be yourself. Be honest. Ask about things that are important to Strawberry the Cat and what she needs and can offer. Make sure we let them know EXACTLY what we can offer the outfit, and what makes it unique to US, just like any relationship. I've got things that are important to ME!!! Numero uno is MONEY. If I'm gonna give myself to the program 100% then I need a stipend, I need a part time job, and I need grants. Does the school have these things? How can I have them as soon as possible? Numero dos would be about how they've handled studio-work during the pandemic. That's GOTTA come up because if their thing was just to close up shop then that's a problem. Also, what ABOUT the studios? How big are they, what kind of access do you have, can you be really loud or will that bother people... I don't think it hurts to ask the interviewers exactly what they would like to get out of YOU. Not what they would like about any old admitted student, what they would like to see from YOU and what is it about you and what you have on offer in specific that is of interest to them. Be like you already got admitted and you're asking them what's crackin today. I don't know why I started numbering the things that are important to me and then stopped at two, but those are some of my ideas. I'd also like to hear what others think, and what you think as well. Why am I up at 2am?
  11. Maceo is over at the Chicano Studie Department at UC Davis. He's pretty cool. We don't really hang out, we just run in the same circles. Plus, his dad and mine had beef since like the 1960's, LOL! Old Chicanos were crazy. I peeped your Davis painting, online. I haven't gone by the joint but yeah, it's tight! I can't find your Woodland piece, online. Can you post pix or a link? I hope you get into the MFA program because we really need more prolific and Masters Level Chicana Artists doing big artwork in the public gallery for the kids and abuelitas and varrios. There's so much of us men, too many, and a lot of the guys aren't even that good. Not to be mean, but I've seen some very crummy Chicano "Arte" out there. Too many Dia de los Muertos, Aztec Warrior, Pachuco/macho stuff. Chicano Arte has become very stereotypical. We need some fresh new ideas from some pros, some LADY PROS!!! ? I'm hanging out with my artista homegirl Marbella, and also Esteban Villa, this weekend. Esteban created the RCAF with Maseo's pop. Esteban is a living legend in Chicano Arte. I'll post you some pictures! ?
  12. Yes, dood. For real. I keep rotating from the application management sites where your decisions are given, to my inbox, to The Grad Cafe. It's Wednesday. If you look back at the FOF's from last year till 2018, the schools start sending out stuff starting from tonight. So, yeah... Nerves in full-effect fasho!
  13. The Grad Cafe sux for data hosting. If you want to add images of your artwork to the forum you have to first post them to a site that will host the pix, then add the image as a URL to hotlink them from the host site to The Grad Cafe. It workz for animated gifs, as well. A good site for that is imgbb.com because you don't need to give any personal info and you can use a burner email account from temp-mail.org to give them as a contact. Just sign up and start posting the hostings. It's really easy. Plz see instructions below in my gif with our boi Speedy Gonzales.
  14. So nice to hear from Raza going for the MFA! We really need more of us doing this. I've been private messaging with another homegirl on the forums here who is doing her MFA and is also really good. She's not Mexican/Chicano, but her culture has so much in common with us. Woodland is real nice! I did a commissioned painting for the Mayor of Woodland City Council Member, Art Pimantel back in 2014. I know Maceo!!! ? You didn't go to the bottom of the webpage in my signature? There's a whole video of me and Maceo and his brother and the Royal Chicano Air Force and Chicano Park getting awarded for our Chicano art at the Leland Stanford Mansion. Maceo's dad José and my dad Arturo were friends back in the early days of the movimiento and the Royal Chicano Air Force. My dad taught agriculture and Chicano Studies at Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl University at Davis, José taught arte there before he went over to CSUS. Maceo's uncle, Malaquias, taught Chicano Studies, over at UC Davis. I still do arte with Esteban Villa who created the RCAF with Maceo's dad. Back in the day the Chicanos all got into being professors and working in education in order to elevate and maintain our cultura that the White supremacists in and out of the art world were trying to ignore and destroy. People like the Montoya's, and Villa's and Orozco's and the RCAF, and my father made sure that MEChA became strong and we put our people in places of learning. We have to keep it going and be strong, as well. Yeah, things are not so good here in Califas. It's getting impossible to afford anything. Forget about being a homeowner. Everyone from all the other states and countries bought up and gentrified all the land here in the mid aughts, priced it up, and sold it back to us like we're a bunch of pendejos acting like we're investors about to get rich. Plus, the ghetto-lyfe attitude is everywhere and people are totally entitled ready to get mad at each other at the drop of a hat and start fighting. I'm not exaggerating. My little Chicano neighborhood here in Alkali Flat was nice when I moved up here 5 years ago from San Diego. They put in a homeless camp right across the street from my apartments a few years back and filled it with homeless people from other states who decided to come out to Califas and live here because we're better to homeless people than other states. I feel for them, but now my friends with familia won't bring their little kids to my house to play anymore because people shoot meth right outside my building. I can't walk out of my house without being harassed for change from grown men. I usually live in Chicano Varrios because you don't really have to deal with that sort of thing, but times have changed. Sacra is very terrible now and I can't wait to move far away from here back to Southern Califas near the border with Mexico and the beach. It's not like ALL of Califas is like that, just most of it, but you won't see it on the news enough to make a difference. Every year that Silicon Valley keeps inviting cheap slave-labor to "innovate" and make Califas less livable, more expensive, more dangerous, and less family friendly for those of us that have always been here in Aztlan. The White supremacists are definitely making a big-time comeback since the Orange Nazi was president. I've been told to "GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM" on numerous occasions enough that it wouldn't feel abnormal for that to happen to me. It's still not as bad as the South or Midwest Estados Unidos, tho, for the most part. Do you have links to pictures of your murales??? I'll drive out there to Davis and check them out!
  15. Baaahahahaa!!! YOU KEEP CHANGING YOUR AVATAR! Why are you so crazy? ? That's awesome you are getting hit up by the universities. So stoked for you!!! Well, this is the last full week of January. It's the week a lot of us start hearing things. Today I got an email from UCI about an update to one of my recommenders. That's about it. Nervous, worried, excited...
  16. YUUUUUP! Because you guys posted these, I decided to just give my applications a once over cuz you both made me paranoid. LO AND BEHOLD... friggin, my San Diego State University LOR's had not been sent!!! I panicked and hit the resend thing, then I hit up my recommenders and asked what's up, and they never even got the requests. Or, they did, but they went to the "round file," right off. CRAP!!! I had to remind the ladies who were writing my LOR's to check their emails again because I resent the requests. SDSU utilizes this deal called "Interfolio" for their admissions process. It's disjointed, bizarre, and clunky, unlike the UC and Stanford things which are moar efficient and easy. A couple emails I got from Interfolio were flagged in my MacMail on my MacBook, for some reason. I had to tell it to send stuff from Interfolio to my inbox. Outlook flagged Interfolio, as well. I wrote the program to tell them what time it was. I hope that's okay. So lame. Thank you for the heads up Katfude and SC. That's why I love this forum. I did some portraits of you both as thanks. Anyone else have Interfolio problems??? From what I've read on previous years FOF's, and from my own experience, this weekend is when denials of admission have gone out for some of the U.C.'s, and next week is when interview invites start showing up in our emails. C'MON!!! ??
  17. AYYY! YOOOOOOOOO!!! Just a heads up... Competitive art used to be in the Olympics Between 1912 and 1948, the Olympic Games awarded medals in sculpture, music, painting, and architecture, according to Smithsonian magazine. After a heated debate in the post-war years, the competitions were scrapped. John Copley of Britain won one of the final medals: At 73, he would be the oldest medalist in Olympic history if his silver, awarded for his 1948 engraving "Polo Players," were still counted. There is also Walter W. Winans!!! Walter W. Winans (April 5, 1852 – August 12, 1920) was an American marksman, horse breeder, sculptor, and painter who participated in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. He won two medals for shooting: a gold in 1908 and a silver in 1912, as well as demonstrating the sport of pistol duelling in the 1908 Games. He also won a gold medal for his sculpture An American Trotter at Stockholm in 1912. In addition, Winans wrote ten books. Winans was HARD AF!!! Dude was shooting guns and making animals live and duling and running and travelling and writing books like a BOSS!!! WALTER WAS A MAC, STRAIGHT UP! Ol' Walt harkened back to the O.G. Olympians of the classical/golden era of Greek history, like almost three stacks ago. The Greeks were masterful. In Greek society it wasn't enough just to be a theoretically visual artist. As an artist, you had to understand the fundamentals and be able to create things that bettered society and were worth looking at and considering, beautiful things. BUT, you were also expected to understand philosophy, mathematics, as well as be good at athletics. That is a well rounded individual. A holistic education for an advanced and enlightened society. The word “art” is derived from the Latin ars, which originally meant “skill” or “craft.” These meanings are still primary in other English words derived from ars, such as “artifact” (a thing made by human skill) and “artisan” (a person skilled at things). But it's not like there weren't problems and lame crap, tho. Like, if you didn't do stuff correctly, they would whip your ass. Like literally BEAT YOU UP!!! ? And they could even fine you cash-money for things like starting the race too early or poking some guy's eye. Oh, also, dudes only. No chicks allowed. PLUS, you're gonna be butt-naked in front of all the homies. ? Pshhh... I'd prob be all like, "nahhh." They should have kept fine arts (visual) in the Olympics. Art competitions at the 1912 Summer Olympics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_competitions_at_the_1912_Summer_Olympics Walter W. Winans Art: https://www.invaluable.com/artist/winans-walter-4vvrq20jvs/sold-at-auction-prices/ Look at this crazy guy! ♥️GET GUD AND BE LIKE WALT?
  18. HELL YEAH MAN!!! Nice job! Hope I receive the same kinds of emails at some point soon. ??????
  19. BARELY BEING USED??? Oh boi. I would tear that UP! I'm wanting to still work with metals, but also work on my nu-media explorations, robotics and what-not. I got my fingers crossed pretty hard for UCSD!
  20. You guys are ALL so freakin GOOD!!!!! TMNG is tight with the threads and incredible residencies and exhibitions. My boy Pickle has the supafly nu-media thing going on. Hannah is crazy with the color, imagination, and detail. Slick Jake, have you seen his prints? The dood is for realz! Homegirl Kate Flake has those ill draped cut-paper mono's. Ya girl Sīxíng is breaking off these ink and polystyrene creations, she ain't playin. @Pickle95@slickjaketheruler@kaflake@xu6ing@tmng There are others too but that's just off the top of my head. I'm glad I don't have to compete with most of you for a grad seat. I wouldn't want to. @Antisocialprintmaker Oh, Hannah... You mentioned the Laguna College of Art. I always say to people who are considering a school in California to just do it. Two years ago my niece got into some good schools including Harvard and Stanford. When thinking about this, it's a no-brainer. Stanford for sure. Why? Because it's in California. My buddy Dylan used to always say he loves living here because "California is the edge of the world. It's where everything starts, and where everything ends. California is the alpha and omega, the Yin and Yang." Dylan was messed up and crazy as hell, but he was right. As an artist who intends to produce on the broad scale, spending time in California, especially in your youth, is a MUST. No pressure, no judgement, jus my opinion, jus-sayin. Plus, dood, Laguna Beach is FAB. I grew up south of there in San Diego, and as beautiful as SD is, Laguna Beach is next level. Plus you've got San Diego, L.A., Mexico, the desert, the mountains, the beach, SO many kinds of different foods and cultures. It's the biz. AND YOU'VE GOT CHICANOS HERE. C'MON NAO! We're the best evar for food and FUN! ???? Has anyone heard anything back from UC San Diego or UC Irvine??? LET'S GOOOOO!!!!!!!!! ?
