  1. Just got my Duke rejection. I will probably accept the Chapel Hill offer since my partner already got rejected from Brown and we want to try to stay in the same area. With that said, I will probably be not using this site as frequently and focusing more on the next steps. This whole process has been pretty rough on my mental health. For those of you still waiting, best of luck! I hope the tides go in your favor
  2. @SPGR_22 I wouldn't worry too much about that. I received a rejection from some schools and my application still said "being processed" or "submitted", so the portal clearly doesn't always align with the most current update. You should get notified one way or the other via email Best of luck!
  3. @SPANGRAD22I genuinely hope that you hear back soon. My email was actually quite disappointing. It was a generic email that wasn't from anyone in the department, rather the "Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid". Even a generic email from the DGS would have been better
  4. @MillerS Congrats!!!! That has to be a huge relief. It's an amazing program
  5. @SPANGRAD22 Just got my rejection 2 hours ago. If you haven't received one, perhaps thats a good thing! Good luck
  6. @SPANGRAD22 I still haven't heard anything from them either. I reached out three weeks ago and they said last Friday decisions would be out so I don't have a single clue what the delay is ? Hoepfully we hear back soon!
  7. I suppose that I can assume rejection from NYU since I did not get an interview...oh well. That definitely sucks but it is what it is
  8. @MillerS I know right...I feel the same way about Boston, the wait is torturous! I emailed them 13 days ago and they told me "within the next 2 weeks" was when they expected to give results. NYU told me they were aiming for last Friday and I still haven't heard anything from them either. I am assuming that things came up that delayed the decisions, especially with that giant snowstorm in the northeast a few weeks ago :')
  9. I hope they aren't interviewing, bc I definitely did not interview...good luck to you as well @MillerS. This has been a rough semester to apply it seems
  10. @MillerS haven’t heard from BU, but according to DGS they should get back by the end of this week…we’ll see if that is actually the case lol
  11. Hi everyone! I am from NC but don't have a lot of experience with the Triangle area. I received an offer from UNC and my partner has an interview at Duke, so a UNC-Duke combo (ironically enough) is looking very possible. If this is our situation, then what would the best living situation be? Are there good housing options between Durham and CH, or would it be reasonable to live in one city (or a place like carrboro on the outskirts) if the other person has to drive back and forth to campus? Also, if anyone goes to school in that area and wants to connect regardless of discipline, please feel free to message me I would love to get to know people in the area since it is the most likely scenario.
  12. Follow up- I emailed my POI and she basically said if I wasn't interviewed then I was not going to get in. It was a kind email where she told me that I had really strong materials but they just didn't have a lot of funding this year. This rejection stings a little since I thought I had a really strong application, but oh well. Life goes on and I am still very excited for my UNC acceptance.
  13. Still haven’t heard anything. Probably a bad sign, I should probably start mentally preparing myself for the worst case scenario.
  14. Hello! I am coming from Hispanic Lit but I saw your post and thought that I would contribute my two cents. Like others have stated, this year is particularly competitive. The application pool is atypically large since a lot of universities did not accept applications last year, on top of the fact that several universities are accepting only around 3-4 new people. I also agree with everyone here in the sense that you should not give up hope yet; you still have other schools to hear from. That being said, the advice that I want to contribute is that a successful graduate application largely depends on how you frame your experiences and weaknesses. For example, I have not published anything, yet I got accepted into a fairly prestigious public university. For context, I will have done two semesters of paid research in my department by the time I finish my masters this Summer. In my SOP, I first talked about doing research for my honors thesis. When I then addressed my time as an RA, I talked about what exactly I did and how that would prepare me for the graduate school environment. I also discussed how I had plans on submitting my honors thesis manuscript (which was also my writing sample) in addition to a literature review in my research field based on the work I'm doing as an RA this semester. Obviously I have not seen your application, but two years of RA experience and three years of relevant work experience gives you so much to work with! It could really set you apart from other applicants if you dive into how these experiences are unique to YOU and contribute to your perspective as a scholar. My point is that if you can successfully leverage your experiences into relevant skill sets and create a convincing argument for yourself, I think that you can beat out an applicant who has publications, but does not know how to talk about themselves. I also agree that getting more education (especially if it is unfunded) is not the best route to take. Publishing could never really hurt your application, and I also think you could apply to more places just to increase your chances if you don't get in this round. It is hard to say what more you can improve without seeing your letters and whatnot, but I honestly think you have a strong set of experiences to work with. And just to reiterate this again, grad acceptances are a crapshoot this year so try not to lose hope. Best of luck ❤️
  15. No, which makes me lose a little bit of hope if I'm being honest. However, I think someone else in this forum mentioned that they might not interview everyone. I wasn't expecting too much when I applied there, but I had a meeting with my POI this Summer and she expressed interest in my research and we discussed the program at length. On the other hand though, they are only accepting three people and it's a highly competitive program. Either way, best of luck to all of you
  16. Nothing from Cornell. I was told by their DGS to expect results about a week from last Friday, so hopefully that means that we will hear early next week.
  17. I asked specifically about interview/decision timelines and she said they will "try to let people know" by Friday, but it could be later. She didn't tell me specifically what we would be notified about despite asking about both, so based on the info given by @GRADSPN1, I would assume that we should hear about interviews or if we make it to the next phase of the process. I wish I could help more ?
  18. @GSHopeful1 Firstly, thank you so much for the kind advice about teaching. I have done teaching prácticas on a small scale where I did 8 hours of teaching, but I have only done research assistantships so I don't have practice planning an entire course for a class larger than 5 people. Although it seems daunting, I have confidence that the cohort would help me. I felt the same way about Michigan that you do about UNC in terms of program fit, but I guess that goes to show that you never know how the chips will fall. 3a/2w/0r is amazing and you should definitely be proud, especially given how selective programs are being this year Mucho ánimo!
  19. For everyone else who might be applying to similar schools as me, here are the general timelines I received: NYU: Goal is this Friday, but could be later. Brown: End of Feb, early March Duke: Early March Cornell: By the end of this week Boston University: This week or next week
  20. Officially got my rejection from the University of Michigan today. Congrats @GSHopeful1 on getting in! @Angela Merkel The more that I look into their teaching fellowship and talk to alumni about how it works, the more I actually like their program. I was stressed about the idea of teaching right away, but it seems like you get a lot of support. Speaking of supportive environments, I have already gotten a few emails from graduate students and faculty members who were all very kind and willing to meet with me about any questions that I had. Basically, I already have a good feeling about the program and the environment there, and I think I would fit in well. I agree with sportengels here, although it probably depends on the program. This might be a good option if you don't get in anywhere else and you want to improve your application for next time, but as someone who did an unfunded terminal masters it wouldn't be my first recommendation. Based on the email they sent you, I cannot tell if they plan on matriculating you into the PhD program after you finish your MA or not...it's very vague. I'm sure you have already thought about asking for clarification, but if you haven't I would definitely email them. @smgr Welcome I applied to NYU but I haven't heard anything regarding decisions or interviews. I emailed them last Friday to inquire about the timeline, however, and the DGS told me they were aiming for this Friday but she couldn't determine exactly when. Hope that helps you breathe a little easier!
  21. @GSHopeful1congrats! I’m still waiting to hear back from 6/8 programs. I don’t know a lot about Northwestern, but it’s an amazing school and I’m sure they support their grad students well. I hope that hearing a positive response has eased your anxiety during such a stressful experience.
  22. Just to clarify, I LOVE Chapel hill's program and I would be thrilled to accept their offer- but the stipend is a con that gives me some pause
