  1. Hello, I found out Monday I was taken off the waitlist at Indiana and I have committed. I never did hear back from Oregon State, but I let them know that I have decided to go to IU. I'm super excited about Indiana! I wish everyone else nothing but the best. This was a tough and grueling process. It wasn't my first time applying to PhD programs and I'm certainly glad it's my last. Hope to hear what everyone else decided. Wish you all the best of luck this fall!
  2. I e-mailed UCSB this weekend and I got a reply back yesterday that they only had 3 spots and I was not selected. They didn't have staff supposedly and I got a real letter today. So I'm finally done with hearing back from everyone. I'm really crossing my fingers that I get off Indiana's waitlist. I don't want to be disappointed though. On Oregon State's letter, it said I may not even know if I'm off the waitlist until April 30 which is odd. It is likely that I may just end up at Ottawa. @freedom110 I would suggest applying to MA Gender Studies programs. There are a lot more MA programs VS PhD programs in Gender Studies. In 2020, I applied to a mix of MA/PhD programs, so you could do the same. However, it's such a competitive process. I applied to 16 programs (most were gender/feminist studies) and I got accepted into two programs (one without funding), waitlisted by two, and rejected by twelve. I would definitely look into some other interdisciplinary programs (you may want to check out American Studies). I don't regret applying to so many because of how competitive these programs are. Like you said it's very niche. Rutgers had 100+ apps and accepted 3. Arizona had 47 and accepted 3. I know Oregon State only accepted 4. Indiana has a cohort of 4-5. Good luck.
  3. York e-mailed me back tonight that unfortunately I was not accepted as they only had two spots for international students and she encouraged me to re-apply next year (won't be happening). Going to continue to cross my fingers for Indiana.
  4. Hey! It's a waiting game for me. I'm still waiting to see if I get off the waitlist for Indiana and Oregon State. Indiana is my top choice. At this point in time if I don't get off, I'll be attending uOttawa. I emailed York and they're still in the midst of the app process. There's only two VISA spots, but they said they were impressed with my application. They said they should be updating apps by next week. I still haven't heard from UCSB, but I know it's most likely a rejection.
  5. I was just checking my Kentucky portal and I got rejected (it was posted on the portal today). They didn't even send an e-mail. Is that too much to ask for after we put so much into these apps? As we know, Rutgers didn't either. I don't think we can blame the departments though b/c it's the Graduate Schools that send most of these rejections. I just have York and UCSB to hear from now.
  6. Hello, I just got waitlisted at Indiana! I'm totally shocked and ecstatic!!! Indiana has always been a top choice. I thought they already had their recruitment event (but maybe I was wrong) and someone posted in here that Indiana already gave out all their acceptances/waitlists. Nothing is a for sure thing until you receive that e-mail or portal notification. Also I would like to note that I never had an interview here. Edit: Thank you @lagom_lagomfor the kind words.
  7. University of Toronto just rejected me. 3 rejections in one day. It doesn't feel great.
  8. Also denied at Rutgers LOL. "Your application has been reviewed, and the committee has denied admission." If I didn't check this thread, I wouldn't have even checked my portal. I cannot believe they didn't even send an email. On the plus side, I got an application fee waiver. Second rejection today (McGill rejected me for Sociology).
  9. Is anyone else still waiting on any programs? I pretty much know Rutgers and Indiana are going to be rejections obviously and I assume the same for UCSB due to never receiving that finalist email. So I'm still waiting on York, UoT, McGill (Sociology) and UKY. I recently found out Kentucky's program had a second deadline of March 1st? Their priority deadline was Dec 1st for fellowships and assistantships, but I guess they let folks apply until March 1st. I am the most optimistic about this program because of that deadline. I've heard nothing re: UoT and it doesn't seem many other people here applied to Canadian programs. I have my virtual recruitment event tomorrow with Oregon State. I'm still waitlisted there though. I'd like another offer because uOttawa said they will try to match other funding packages (unsure if it'll work if it's American though). I will go to uOttawa if it's my only choice, but I'm just worried about the high cost of living. I wish everyone the best of luck with their decision making.
  10. Thanks I just checked the portal and it says "in review". I hope that isn't the only batch of acceptances!
  11. Has anyone heard anything about McGill's PhD program in Sociology?
  12. I have yet to hear from Rutgers either. I'm also waiting to hear back from Indiana, Kentucky, UCSB, University of Toronto, and York (in Toronto) for Gender/Feminist Studies. My friend goes to Indiana and said their recruitment event is on the 4th, so that's not the best sign. UCSB had the finalist e-mail in January. I saw a post from York a couple weeks that they were accepted and it was an international student and they only accept two international students. Kentucky I've heard an international student got rejected (via the results), but that's it. I know nothing about UoT, but last year supposedly people didn't find out until MAY!? My same friend has told me that nothing is final until you get that letter, so I will remain optimistic but rational at the same time. Edit: Thanks for letting us know, Kayla.
  13. Just got rejected to Yale as well. I applied to the combined program with WGS. Ugh this is my 4th rejection since Saturday.
  14. I just got rejected to Guelph's PhD program in Social Practice and Transformational Change. I'm a little surprised b/c my potential supervisor told me I had a really good shot of getting in and that he would vouch for me which is why I applied. 8 more PhD programs to hear back from. UOttawa is still my only option given Buffalo gave me no funding, so I'm hoping Oregon States takes me off the waitlist.
  15. I just got rejected to Stony Brook. I think this is expected given the acceptances here were Jan 19 and I applied on Jan 13 (deadline was the 15th). It was the last school I applied to. I always wondered if they started reviewing before the deadline though. Because how else would they have reviewed my app so fast? They said, " Your application was very well presented, and our inability to offer admission reflects the intense competition for a limited number of openings. You are to be commended for your achievements so far. We encourage you to continue your studies and are confident you will find another graduate program to match your interests and excellent qualifications" which was at least nice. Ugh. I really need more acceptances. I have heard from the grapevine that Yale's PhD in American Studies (combined with WGS) will come out this week.
  16. Hello, I just got rejected to UCLA. Ugh. Why do they keep rejecting me in the middle of the night!? ? On the bright side, I didn't think I could afford the cost of living of Los Angeles anyway lol. It doesn't feel good that UCSB sent out a "finalists" e-mail in January. It's a top choice for me (but also high COL). I was talking to a prof yesterday about this site and she didn't think it was helping me in a positive way re: stress. I really do appreciate the community we have here, but it doesn't feel good always reading some of the updates. I have to remember these rejections aren't personal. If I recall, UCLA gets like 80-100+ apps with few spots. Hope everyone has a dandy weekend. I have thesis work to do.
  17. Hello, I got an email from Oregon State that I am an "alternate" today which basically means I got waitlisted. It looks like I will be invited to the virtual recruitment events in March as well.
  18. Happy for you and fingers crossed! Has anyone heard anything re: interviews for Indiana? Also, last year someone had posted that Rutgers doesn't interview everyone they admit, so there's still hope: "I wasn't. The grad director told me during my interview that they aren't interviewing many people (and not all admitted will get interviews) and that they didn't know exactly how many they would admit. She told me she only interviewed me because while she was very impressed with my application she had a specific and technical question about it."
  19. Congrats on Oregon State! I also applied there, but I haven't heard back yet. I feel like we should hear about interviews re: Rutgers fairly soon.
  20. I don't think anyone here has applied to UMD (or has said so anyway). Several of us have applied to Rutgers, but no news yet. It's interesting you also received no funding at Buffalo. Do they fund anyone? ?? In 2020, I had applied to Emory and I got my rejection in mid-January so I wouldn't give up yet. I know several people here got accepted to Stony Brook and got in, but I also haven't heard back yet. Maybe they are still making their decisions? I know for some schools they'll give out rejections first and that's not the case here. hugs to you @bluekayla, Arizona just wasn't meant to be!
  21. I woke up to a rejection from the University of Arizona, so that's nice. 2 acceptances and 2 rejections thus far, but no funding that's very affordable (Buffalo gave me none). I still have 12 schools to hear back from, so I'm glad I decided to apply to 16. ?
  22. Hello, I got accepted to Buffalo's Global Gender Studies PhD tonight. However, they are providing no funding. It says "our funding to support graduate students is unfortunately limited, and we are unable to offer you financial support at this time" I honestly wasn't expecting to get in at any institution and then receive zero funding. I had heard that some programs won't even accept you if they don't give you funding. At least I wasn't rejected. I'm just disappointed.
  23. I just got rejected from Minnesota too, LOL. So happy I'm not alone. ? Your first rejection hurts a little bit.
  24. Thank you! I asked and basically I was told that I can accept now and always decline later, so that's what I plan on doing. The biggest problem after doing the math is the funding. They give me 21.5k CAD, but you still have to pay tuition so your TA stipend is just about 12.5K CAD after and that's not even enough to pay for rent. From my understanding from talking to people in the US, your tuition waiver and your stipend are separate where as here it's not. I was told that they may be able to match other offers, but not sure if that includes American programs. I have no idea what the timeline is. When I applied to 3 PhD programs in 2019-2020, I got rejected to all 3 and it was in Jan (Emory), end of Feb (UW), and April (UCSC; even after April 15th). I've heard Rutgers and Indiana require interviews, but I'm not sure besides that. It doesn't exactly state on the website which programs require interviews. I'm just anticipating them to come on in gradually, but they could all come in at once. Honestly not positive because every school is different. I wish you nothing but the best @anxious_chic. I know how hard this process can be.
  25. Hello! I have some good news. I just heard back from my first school (UOttawa) and they accepted me! I'm very excited that I'll be going somewhere! However, they want a decision by Feb 4. I won't even hear back from all my schools until April. How would you go about this? I'm going to ask for an extension for sure.
