  1. How did your Northwestern interview go? I had mine on Saturday, and it was pretty tough. I thought the questions that they asked were some of the deepest questions I have received in an interview.
  2. It looks like each department has a single "artist-in-residence" who reaches out and schedules interviews one by one.
  3. Berkeley's MFA program doesn't have disciplinary tracks. I think you meant UCLA's DMA program?
  4. A couple people here mentioned UC Berkeley. I interviewed with them last week. They said they were wrapping up interviews and would have decisions by the end of the month.
  5. Did anyone interview with Northwestern today and want to share their experience? ?
  6. Strawberrycat I had a similar interview experience but with a different school. I felt like maybe I was supposed to take the reins on talking about my work, which wouldn't have been a problem, but it wasn't clear. The committee asked a lot of questions, but the questions were from a list of general questions rather than follow-up questions to what I said. At the end of the interview, I didn't gain any insight about the program, and I don't know what new things--if any--they learned about me. I have to think that maybe this is just the style of interview practice for some schools.
  7. That's amazing that you were able to finish new works after submitting your application! Bravo. I don't think the interview process is a test of any sort, so there is no wrong approach. Your submission probably reveals productivity as one of your strengths. I submitted four images of works that I felt would best narrate what I hope to work on while at Yale... 3 were from my portfolio, 1 was older and intended to support an origin story of sorts.
  8. Is it fair to ask you how many people they are interviewing for the 8-10 spots? ?
  9. There seems to be much mystery around Rutgers this year! Based on the fact that they are doing only one interview day (this is also stated on their website), and assuming they are doing individual interviews and not panel interviews, I'm going to guess 10-15 interviewees.... ???
  10. My portal shows no changes either. Rutgers has an option to do on-site interviews, so maybe they are reaching out to those who live far away, to schedule the zooms before on-sites?
  11. Received invitation to interview with Rutgers over email. Good luck everyone.
  12. Have you considered more introvert-friendly programs, like Cranbrook, some low-res programs, or Bard's summer-only residency program? Cranbrook does a European-style art school, where you work in your studio independently, have no classes whatsoever to take, don't have to interact with anyone until you meet with faculty for critiques. Personally I think the amount of time it takes to cultivate a genuine, sincere relationship with a professor at a school you want to attend is not worth it, unless you already have made a strong connection before. In my application process, I spoke with friends/acquaintances who were past graduates or art professors, and everybody said your portfolio is what gets you through the first round and to serious consideration. In programs where hundreds of applications are received and faculty are overworked, you need to have a compelling portfolio to have your statement of purpose read. And in programs where graduate students get to assign scores to applications, they are only looking at images and looking at them very fast. So, again, I think the key is a strong portfolio. When I asked people to write letters of rec on my behalf, I offered to make a bullet-point list of courses I took with them (in the case of professors), the assignments I did in those courses, what I've accomplished outside of the classroom, etc. The fact that you have 3 people submit letters on your behalf in a timely manner is oftentimes good enough for the application. Rarely do the letters determine the final decision after an interview.
  13. Congratulations on your Yale interview invitation! I received one too but in a different department. I spoke with a Yale graduate this week for interview tips, and one of the things she said that stuck with me is that you want to be able to answer the question about where your art fits in with the contemporary art world. In other words, they want to hear you contextualize your art. Yale invites museum/gallery curators to co-teach their classes, so this lets you know they're interested in the world of commercial (for lack of a better word) art more than, say, academia art.
  14. Did anyone apply to UC Berkeley’s MFA program too?
  15. I have been staring at my email waiting for any notification all day, but alas nothing. I feel like colleges took the day off today. Is 2-2-22 a holiday?
  16. I believe some RISD departments, like printmaking, accept students without interviews. But painting and sculpture require interviews.
  17. Did you get an interview with RISD Painting? They sent out invitations last week.
  18. If a faculty from a school that you applied to suddenly started following you on Instagram after the application deadline, what does it mean? ?? Who else is looking for signs anywhere and everywhere like a maniac? Lol
