  1. I guess probably they were not impressed with your enquiries for the term in your previous email comparing with others response. Then they make an excuse to turn you down. I don't think there is much to do at this point of time. This experience tells us that we need to be cautious with the opportunities that appear. A lapse of an opportunity may mean very serious results.
  2. Yes, I agree with Golden Monkey. I got accepted to my current MBA program, of course not funded, without any problem with my age. I even got the grand prize from the program as the No. 1 out of more than 800 applicants. However, I do encounter quite a lot of hardships for the funded PhD programs. Till this moment, I hear nothing from any of the remaining 5 programs. I still expect some kind of funding from the school that accepts me to start from Masters of Research program. Sad to think about this.
  3. I applied to 6 American schools. So far one school rejected me via email last month. None of the other 5 contact me for any news. I feel frustrated. I have received an offer without information of funding from a shool in UK and need to confirm acceptance by 28 April. I figure that I have been rejected by the 5 schools, but at least they should send me letters of results so that I won't wait.
  4. When I started to read this post, I was almost dreaming if it were written by myself, because this is exactly what happens on me. But I have decided to go with Masters program even if I cannot obtain the funding. Of course, meanwhile I contact the professors to apply for any kind of funding so that I can be released of some burden. The professor in charge has agreed to try for me. I figured that the professor appreciated what I have done so far but also identified some major drawback that may hinder my future studies. I do feel the professor very friendly.
  5. I have received offer without funding as an international student. Yet this is so far my only choice, so I may just take it by arranging some loans in my home country. I believe UK seldom give fundings to students. I wrote to the department head who interviewd me, who told me that my supervisor is going to write a letter of support on top of my application for studentship, however, it is competitive and there is no guarantee that I can get it.
  6. Golden Monkey, we are of the same age. I applied to 6 American schools, 2 of which I thought should be interested in my application, but eventually I think I was wrong. Till today, nothing has been heard from the 5 others. You are indeed lucky to have one offer out of four. I started to apply to 2 British schools just to enhance my chances. This is a good move, I now realize. One British school has not answered to my application. The last one that I applied, on 15 Feb, gave me offer, till today with no funding. But the school told me that they have attached a letter of support to fund for my studies.
  7. I'm 44. So far the situation is:-- No news from American schools except one rejection in early March. I guess all the others will send me rejections in the coming couple of weeks. But I do hear from schools in Europe. I got one interview but got rejected. I have received a conditional admission from a good program in UK. I do believe age matters to some extent. Though my personal conditions could have weighed heavier, since I did really poorly in GMAT. How are the other older applicants? What are the results of your applications?
  8. I'm anxious too. I have applied to 10 programs but heard from none, except 1 interview on cold-call which made me depressed. I believe that 1 interview may lead to a rejection. The others are still in desperate silence. The problem is that if this year I don't get admitted, it is not likely that I'll try another year and almost for sure I'll go to industry. Sad. Hope I'll get admitted somewhere.
  9. Even though I use GMAT, my test results were terrible as well. I hope what has happened on you will happen again on my application! Yes, I have done well with all other aspects but GMAT. It now seems that mid-low ranked schools could be flexible in their admission decisions.
  10. I am an international applicant, target field: PhD in entrepreneurship TOEFL 102 (L21, S26), GPA3.68 for grad. 3.36 for u.g., one paper under review (SSCI but low tiered journal), one conference paper, one paper in domestic core journal Semi-finalist in Global Moot Corp Business Plan Competition and many other awards Awarded in 2009 Best entrant of the MBA program (AMBA and Equis accredited) However, my poor GMAT almost killed me: T570(Q45, V24), actually due to no time for preparation. I've scheduled to re-take the test and hopefully can pass the damn 600 line! Yet, below 650 are all poor scores, right? I am applying to ordinary programs, non-top tiered. In case of still poor GMAT score, do I still stand a chance for admission? Any comment will be appreciated.
  11. Oversea applicant for 8 programs: total US$2000+, including test fees, transcripts, application fees, etc...
  12. Thank you for the suggestion, which I think is very good. I'll take it. As for editting by my tutors, I am afraid it is not possible. They are all very busy, and won't be able to spend time on my sample writing. I'll do some revision after I take the exames by late Nov. I'll be having about a week. Hope it still helps with my application.
  13. Thank you so much for the advice. I'll try this way. My speed is terribly slow.
  14. My friends, this is really a critical moment for me. A friend told me that a low quality paper may result in rejection rather than getting added points in the evaluation process. I have rushed a whole month to write up a paper in hopes that I could submit as a writing sample. Yet, one month work cannot produce a really theoretical paper. Actually what I write is an empirical research paper with implications for practitioners. The purpose is not to have some theoretical breakthrough, but to apply other theories to industrial practices. My instructor read my paper and said it was not a good paper from theoretical perspective, because there was no clue of theoretical breakthrough at all. What can I do? Should I submit as a writing sample? or Should I just leave this part blank without submitting anything?
  15. Thank you, my friends. I could still try for that. However, there is now a more important issue, my test results. The deadline is Dec 1, yet my Toefl results won't be available online till 28th Nov. Therefore, the transcripts won't reach the school till after the deadline, i.e., Dec 1. Will it be considered as delay if the official test results reach after Dec. 1?
  16. I checked with my professors who told me he had not received the LOR from the school. I wrote to school, and the reply was that I had to submit application fee first. However, according to the procedure that I saw from the online application, one has to finish the applicatoin process before submitting the application fee. I was totally confused. Anyone who apply for this school, please share your experience. Thanks.
  17. Hello, I'm almost the same age as you and currently an enrolled MBA student. I want to apply for PhD programs and feel good to know someone of my age.

  18. I am asked to outline the intellectual history that informs my decision to pursue graduate study. I was wondering if it refers to my past experience in intellectual studies or interest. I'm not sure about this term, because in our culture this means the history of something really big, like the development history of a nation, for instance. I was further asked in what historical period(s), body of texts, and/or mode(s) of inquiry I was particularly interested. Please give me some explanation and advice, thanks a million.
  19. I had been under the impresssion that I was one of the oldest applicants because I'm in my 40s. I'm also concerned about my age and academic background as you do. I'm a non-native, never taken GMAT, which is the exam that I should take, or TEOFL, an exam all non-natives have to take. My first degree was "English", which is not considered as a degree in English speaking countries. Currently I'm enrolled in an MBA program, going to graduate next year. I wanted to apply for PhD program in my home country, but nobody would like to accept me because of my age. Therefore, to apply for a PhD program in Western countries is my only way to achieve the purpose. In order to prove that I have the capability in quantative research, I am writing a thesis, hopefully to finish in a week. I have not yet decided which publisher to contact for considerations of publication. I hope you guys get admitted, and so do I.
  20. Hi, this is the first time that I post a topic here. I'm an MBA canditate with 7 years entrepreneurial experience. I want to continue my research in PhD, but keep learning from different parties that MBA degree holders are in disadvantageous position in applying for PhD program. I'm very much concerned about that. Another issue is regarding my age: I'm senior to most PhD applicants. Is it also a hurdle in application?
  21. I have never taken GMAT, not even done mock. I have just started to prepare for GMAT. I have taken the diagnostic test, and the result shows that I'm above average. I want to know what kind of percentile is meant by "Above Average"? Thanks!
