I do not think it's ethically or legally right. Diversity is great and I am a proponent for it but black CS grads make up 7-8% so 15% is not normal.

So they practiced overt affirmative action.

I see people getting rejected who have 3.9+ GPAs, high GREs and Letters of Recommendation from top Professors at reputable institutions.
I am in no way claiming all of those black people are unqualified.
However this seemed like a concerted effort from Black in AI so it is likely black students got admitted with lower GPAs. This is unfair.

 

It's been a while since I posted this. I have decided to leave the program and I am currently waiting to hear back from job and transfer applications. It is a complicated situation that involves me filling a DEI grievance against my advisor. I am angry and sad and excited all at once but mostly I am grieving the end of something.

My 2 interviews have been POI + 1 other person (1 GPD, 1 secondary advisor). 
We've chatted about:
-My academic journey
-How I came to the project
-Their thoughts on the project
-Fit assessment

Before I applied, I spoke to 2 POIs on Zoom. One of them said that there was no formal interview with a committee—that I would just receive a result. I'm guessing they would set up a chat if there was someone who wanted to talk to you (as with the poster below), but the process didn't seem as formal.

I applied in the end to 4 PhD programs in the US - Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, and Columbia. I focused on fully funded programs with a strong early modern department.  Am also considering some structured programs in the Netherlands and other places in Europe. US applications are in but I haven't heard back from anywhere yet (not surprisingly). Best of luck to everyone and looking forward to hearing more about where people are applying!
