  1. I came to write my last comment on gradcafe as made a final decision and sent out decline letters to other schools this morning!
  2. Yeah I have received the official GTAship offer with funding information and job description from the graduate office. I was told not everyone gets GTAship, so you might want to double check if they’re giving you funding.
  3. I've just got my numbers for NAU this morning, and it is absolutely the lowest I've ever seen around and also I've gotten. I'm going to ask if there's any fellowship or additional stipend available, but I won't be able to take my spot with the current stipend because average rent in flagstaff is literally 1k - 1.6k for one person. I hope it's better for you. Damn!
  4. I didn't ask and haven't received any information on funding yet. I'm going to email them that I'll be waiting for the funding information before making a decision as that is one of the deciding factors for me! Congrats on your admission too!
  5. well I got my last acceptance to NAU just now and that wraps up my applications. I've got four admissions out of five schools I've applied for Michigan State: interviewed but rejected Wisconsin-Madison: Accepted Hawaii: Accepted Penn State: Accepted Northern Arizona: Accepted all full funding but numbers vary. I hope everyone who is still waiting to hear back get good news soon. Thanks for doing this journey with me strangers on the internet! Best of luck to everyone!
  6. Thanks for sharing! I did see the English stipend and was wondering if we’d get the similar amount. I’ll probably choosing PSU is their stipend is at least 5k more than other programs. Cost of living is also the cheapest there, but I’m worried about the weather and the size of town. I’ll need to see. Either way, congrats to your admission!
  7. I’m still waiting on NAU, but I haven’t been able to narrow it down yet. Have you got the funding info? I don’t know any numbers for PSU, so I’ll need to wait to see what their stipend looks like. Please share if you’ve heard any numbers from them! I’ve tried to look for it but didn’t have any luck. In my case, I do need to make a livable wage to support myself and my pup, so I’ll need to sit down and compare different options once I receive information from PSU and NAU. As of right now, I have no idea! Are you 100% accepting PSU?
  8. I didn’t contact anyone prior for PSU. I didn’t even know Dr. Lu was the advisor for technology for language learning until the interview. I’d say his interest is also not 100% compatible with mine, but regardless, he seemed like a great advisor I’ve contacted two PoI back in November for other schools, but none of them were paired with me when I got the interviews. I still got accepted, so I think contacting PoI ahead of time is really unnecessary (from my experience) I think core faculty in the big programs can accept students at any given time. It’s more about whether you pass the committee screening and how your interview goes at the end.
  9. I put technology for language learning and was paired with Dr. Lu for the interview. The interview went great. Their questions were mainly about my research interest and dissertation plan with a bit of teaching experience. They did say many good things about the program, and I did get the positive feeling after the interview because of how they went into detail to tell me about the program and what they offer to their students. I got an informal admission email from the program director just an hour ago, so I think you’d hear from them in the next few days if you got in. Fingers crossed!
  10. I think the individual email might be for those who have been interviewed. She mentioned 200+ applicants this cycle, so I can see they will just send out generic email for the rest. I think there's a really good chance to get the slot if you're on the third!
  11. Congrats to you too! I assume your advisor is Dr. Isbell right? My advisor is Dr. Crowther! The decision is going to be soooooo difficult
  12. No, I still have not yet heard anything from them. At this point I think it’s either silent rejection or I’m in the bubble, but I came to consensus that MSU is not for me and vice versa. I hope you hear back soon! I’ll post it here if I get an email even for rejection.
  13. I just got my first admission from UW-Madison! The program director sent me an informal email with my PoI cc’ed. The official funding information will be coming in later. I had a really good talk with NAU last Friday too. The interview committee emailed me to apply for GTAship asap after the interview, so I have a good feeling about NAU. The PoI also emailed me to learn about my research plan in detail and gave me what her past and current students did and are doing, saying she’d have them in contact with me. I have one more interview with PSU tomorrow and now I just wait! I am so grateful I have been admitted to at least one that I don’t have to wait in fear anymore. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!
  14. well one thing I know about UIUC is that they are really in boonies my MA advisor once told me he doesn’t understand how people live there😂 I know nothing about the areas but that’s the only comment i’ve heard! I think the school is huge and has many international students though. if you like bigger cities Georgia might be a good option between two. I know some people like quiet, rural areas. I’d definitely try to look into rent prices and the size of the town at UIUC but also Atlanta safety. I’m from South Asia with really good infrastructure and urban cities, so I know small towns in the US would be difficult for me. Currently living in a semi big city for MA, but I think bigger cities have more diversity thus less discrimination if you are POC
  15. I feel conflicted as well. For me, one professor in particular (the oldest one if you had the same members) seemed too nonchalant about being there. Hopefully all three of us receive good news!
  16. Yeah. Cost of living in the US is really high unless you live in the boonies I think PhD fundings are usually barely enough to get by. That was one thing about Hawaii for me, that they are one of my top choices as a program but their rent price is over the top. I'm sure a shared house would be doable, but studies were $2,000 for a box. Probably same thing with Atlanta, since it's a big city with a lot of people. Make sure to check the location of the school too. I think having a car is a must in most areas in the US because even when public transportation is good (which is rare anyway) it's usually dangerous and not reliable. I hope you guys make the best decision for you! If you have multiple offers, you can always try to negotiate the funding too. That's what my current MA advisor recommended.
  17. Thank you! Yeah it's Penn State. I think they might be sending invites at different times depending on the PoIs? It was from the director with the PoI cc'ed in the email. I chose technology for language learning, so if you chose something else, I wouldn't worry about it just yet. The PoI I will be talking to is the last person I had in my mind, so I'm a bit worried, but I'll keep you guys posted! Congrats on GSU and I hope you hear back from PSU soon ps. I am under the impression that you're an international student. I saw that you don't have a specific place in mind yet. If you have not lived in the US and are not well-versed in the urban areas here, I recommend you take locations into consideration when making a final decision. I didn't apply for some programs solely because of their geographical location because I knew I just can't do 4-6 years in such areas. Living costs have huge gap across states, so I'd definitely check out rent prices using apartments.com and safety of the surrounding areas too. Congrats again!
  18. Thanks! I felt the same way about Hawai’i. It was a full 30 minute interview with very detailed research-related questions. They asked me to elaborate on my past research projects I’ve been involved in as well as my dissertation plans, but there were such detailed follow up questions I was honestly surprised how intense it was. Great job though! I can’t wait for all interviews to be over
  19. Got the interview from NAU. I got it from one of two PoIs I had but I didn’t put anyone’s name in SOP due to the limited word count.
