For Cornell applicants, I'm a 1st year PhD student in American Politics at Cornell. I received an email today from our Graduate Field Assistant that contained helpful info that I wanted to share. The email said that the department sent out its admission offers today (I still don't know for certain if waitlists or rejections have been sent out at this time), but I do believe all admission offers went out today. The department received 464 applications and admitted 18 people (6 in AP, 6 in Theory, 6 in CP). The department admitted fewer students than last year due to high yield last year & the department also did not admit anyone for IR this year. Admitted students will hear soon from the DGS and info has been sent out about the open house. It seems like this year was very very competitive -- I hope this info was helpful to people though!

This is a totally valid question. I'm also from an area bigger than Ithaca, so I also had my reservations about being in Ithaca. The town/city has honestly grown on me a good bit though. Ithaca has a nice array of stores, restaurants, and businesses for a city of its size (we have Wegmans and Trader Joes, as an example). I quite enjoy how short of a drive it is to everything. The weather is certainly quite cold. but if you're from the northeast I'm sure you are used to that. I would definitely attend the visit days and see how you feel about the area. I turned down another PhD offer in a much bigger urban area to attend Cornell because I felt like Cornell's PhD program was stronger! Happy to answer any more questions

I don't have much insider information about this year's process (the admissions committee does not tell current grad students really anything about the admissions process), except for when the grad student open house is, so that we can plan to be there to meet people. Last year though, I think they sent out all acceptances and waitlists on the same day, and then the graduate field assistant sent out all the deny emails a few days later. I'm so sorry you haven't heard anything yet -- I know the wait is agonizing. I wish you the best in this stressful process!

Hi everyone, congrats to the Cornell admits that got good news today. I've been lurking on this year's forum page... haha. I'm a current first-year PhD student at Cornell University in American Politics. I'm happy to answer any questions y'all may have about the Government department at Cornell

I’ve already committed to Cornell for my PhD, but I find it fascinating that I still haven’t gotten a decision from Georgetown lol. Are they really taking this long just to send me a rejection email?

This is the gradcafe biology PhD forum that I was able to find: https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/166585-2024-biologicalbiomedical-sciences-phd-applicants-and-admissions-results/

American politics, their poli sci PhD. I’m not too mad about it, as I have more appealing offers elsewhere
-
I’m sorry you didn’t get good news 😕

I emailed Georgetown about the status of applications, and received this response: “At this moment, the admission committee is still reviewing all applications, so decisions have not been made as of yet. There is not a concrete date, but all applicants can expect to receive a status update in 2 weeks near the end of March. Hopefully this helps, let me know if you have any questions.” This answer is bizarre, because I’ve seen some people on here say they already had their visit days and everything lol. Also, many people have reported receiving decisions from Georgetown, so idk

I was waitlisted. But because of other offers I have received that are more attractive to me, I requested to be removed from the waitlist, in hopes of helping other applicants potentially get admitted.

Hi all, I hope you’re doing well. With just under a month from the April 15th commitment date, I’m pleased to say I’ve tentatively decided where I’ll be attending for my PhD. I applied to 15 PhD programs and was admitted to 2, rejected by 11, and have 2 decisions pending, though given my current acceptances I would decline them even if admitted. The two schools I was admitted to were Rice and Cornell. I’m going to be accepting Cornell’s offer, and I will decline the offer from rice soon, to hopefully allow for waitlist movement.

Rejected by Michigan state. No email yet, but I checked the portal, which had a rejection message
-
Question for those on this forum: is there any substantive difference between PhD programs titled “Government” vs those titled “Political Science”. For instance, Harvard, Cornell, and Georgetown all call their PhD programs government. My understanding is that this is merely a name thing. Anyone have any thoughts?
-
Georgetown historically sends rejections very very late. Sometimes late March or early April.
-
I’m going to assume these schools have relatively little waitlist movement haha. My guess is that many of those who get admitted likely accept their offer.
-
Thank you! I’ve gotten into two schools (rice and Cornell), so once I’ve gotten to attend both of their visit days, i do plan to make my final decision shortly after, in hopes that it allows for some waitlist movement.
-
What is meant by the April 15th deadline is firm? Do you mean an admission offer must be accepted by April 15th or it is at risk of being lost?
-
People who were admitted to Georgetown, did they already have their visit days? I haven’t heard anything from them yet, so I’m assuming a rejection at this point
-
I applied to Pitt and have no idea what’s going on with them. It’s now March 1st, and with the commitment date being April 15th, you’d think we would have decisions by now
-
I received a rejection the other day. It was just an email to check my portal, which had a rejection letter. You could email them if you want to see if they can give you a decision by email. But, it may make more sense to just await an email from them. I’m pretty sure all admitted applicants have been notified
-
Anyone know when Georgetown rejections are going out? I know they already had their visit days
-
Yeah. It was an email to check my portal, which had a rejection message.
-
Just got rejected by UNC
-
I applied there and haven’t gotten a decision yet
-
Maybe I’m wrong about this, but it seems UNC admitted very few students this year. There’s a small group of acceptances that was posted at the end of January. But it does seem very few were admitted this year
