Agree with what others have said, so I'll just add: if this is based on your friend's thoughts on the professors' writing, I wouldn't let that sway them too hard. Sometimes writers whose work we love don't end up being teachers we vibe with, and vice versa.

Sorry, here's hoping you get better news today! They confirmed receipt of my sample back in december but otherwise, this is the first I'm hearing from them.

Sounds like they made offers already; sorry if that's bad news "This year we were overwhelmed by the number of strong applicants competing for a very limited number of spots. Although your application was not among the first offers we made, there is a chance that we’ll be able to extend an offer to you in the coming weeks."

I'm on the edge of my seat about this one too. I would assume no interview is a soft rejection, but no idea when fiction interviews will start popping up (altho I'd assume it could be any time now)

Just wanna echo what others have said (Alabama is a GREAT school!) and validate that I sooo relate to your line of thinking. I think a lot of us are used to instinctively looking for reasons to downplay our own accomplishments, but in this case I think you gotta throw yourself a bone and celebrate that you got into a fantastic program!
