Yeah, if you want to be an academic librarian you need an MA in any other subject than library science - this is because many librarians (and certainly library directors) on campuses are technically faculty. So taking the history MA could actually work for your library science career.

Well, then that's not fair if there was no way for the OP to find that information.

What is more important: Program or Research?
qbtacoma replied to laurend's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Yes, I would say go with the group that you connect with on a personal level, even if the research may be not as spot-on to what you are doing. If they are supportive anyway they will give you opportunities to pursue your own flavor of research even if it is a little off of what they do as a whole. -
You know, I don't necessarily agree that the history department was culpable for not being aware the application didn't make the GPA cut-off. Yes, they should have double-checked, but I feel the burden is on the applicant to make sure s/he qualifies for a certain program, and to get an exception in writing from the grad director if that is not the case. Probably the program just assumed the applicant, like all the self-selected others, met the Graduate School requirements and didn't double check. Or, some staff member just made a mistake when verifying the basic requirements and didn't get this one for some reason, eventually leading to the OP's unfortunate situation. People make human mistakes. We expect grad programs to cut us some slack when, say, we attach the wrong files to our applications, but then we don't give them any slack.

For folks waiting on University of Michigan and Washington, both have confirmed to me that they will be sending out notifications next week.

Congratulations! This sounds like a good thing, and like wanderlust said, this is probably a case of one or both professors going on sabbatical while you in the program. Actually this is also good news because clearly the program is thinking ahead and helping you in advance instead of letting you scramble for a new advisor while your first goes on leave. It is likely that the professor you mentioned in your SOP isn't taking new students or doesn't have enough room for you - lucky, you have two others who match your interests at the same school!

Now my hands are all itchy for my official acceptance letter.

Someone on another thread mentioned that one program basically said this to her.

What! That's stupid logic. If they are trying to privilege domestic students then they should just say so (so people could call that out for what it is). Obviously some international applicants will have advantages over others, advantages comparable to domestic students, and they shouldn't be punished for where they happened to live just because other international students might have to work harder to get to the same place.

A is a lost cause. Grieve, and then accept a position at B or C. You know that A fits your research interests right now, but you can't predict whether/how your interests will change over the next few years. It may turn out that you will develop in new directions which will in the long term make B and C great fits for you. Regardless, it is NOT a good idea to reject two admits to selective schools on the slim hope that A would accept you next year - not if you really want to go to grad school, that is. Congratulations on your acceptances!

Do professors care if you wear sweatpants all the time?

Should I mention a possibility of NASA giving me a fellowship
qbtacoma replied to lotrsimp12345's topic in Waiting it Out
I think you said on another thread that NASA will give this to you if you get into grad school. First of all, congratulations! Second of all, yes, absolutely tell you grad schools! When they have to make the hard decisions about who to admit, knowing that you have outside funding is another point in your favor. -
Are you suggesting that all public servants feel no accountability to the public, always? That they wouldn't want to keep budgets and low taxpayer burden in mind? I find this a dubious assertion, especially as there have always been (where I've lived, anyway) fiscal conservatives who seek out positions in government for the sole purpose of preventing it from spending too much money. These are in addition to the folks who work for government because the genuinely want to serve the public. They exist!
