Hey! I asked around and I honestly think they did not re-award any declined awards. I know some people who declined, and others who were on top of the waitlist, but received nothing at all. It is very strange. The sshrc might have retained the funds.
-
Hi! Do you know what happened to the declined awards? Did they already re-award those?
-
Most probably they will be separate awards mostly for foreigners, so yes.. The purpose of the 2024 budget is to "retain canadian talent" in canada
-
I really do not think that the Vanier or Banting postdoc will be discontinued because those two are open to non-canadians.. if they eliminate them, then they would have to open the regular competitions to non-canadians which I do not think will happen. Btw, the majority of banting sshrc winners this year, were foreigners. I am very surprised by that.

I am holding out hope anyone knows? I tried to ask but no answer from sshrc..
-
Its possible depending on your rank if you are high up on the waitlist or way at the end.. there is still no info about more funds for waitlisters but we can keep track of news through support our science: https://www.supportourscience.ca/
-
That's super insightful. It would also make sense that some of the funds go towards the waitlisters. The budget says that they will "build on" the number of awards in 2024-2025.

Hey everyone! This is from the 2024 budget report released yesterday : "To increase core research grant funding and support Canadian researchers, Budget 2024 proposes to provide $1.8 billion over five years, starting in 2024-25, with $748.3 million per year ongoing to SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR."

Btw, for the sshrc waitlist, it would be helpful to know (also for future applicants) when the waitlist period begins and finishes.
-
Don't give up. Publications are the most important thing in academia. Even more important than postdocs or grants.
-
It is not! You have to keep asking them until they tell you. I kept emailing them for 2 weeks until someone finally answered and told me I am at rank 18. They are secretive and lack transparancy.. but it is our right to know our rank.

Hey! Ive been asking here on gradcafe and on reddit, if anybody knew about declines. Someone here on gradcafe who won a banting said they knew someone who declined on 2B. Someone here in this post said they declined in 4B. Yes, you are second. There is a waitlist, and it is committee specific. The next in line gets the alternate. However, the timeline is weird. Alternate can be given at any time, like it could be in may or september, even though declines all happened in march. I still don't understand the logic here. If you find info on this it would be really helpful. This is from a supervisor: 'Alternates are possible. SSHRC officers do not want to raise the expectations of any candidates as that would be unfair to them, but you have a reasonable shot at receiving the award. If you are first alternate you will receive it if anyone ahead of you declines theirs. The two most likely reasons someone would decline are if they receive a tenure track job, a Banting post-doc, or simply decide to leave the field. The number of SSHRC Banting winners is very small and many of the winners have previously or currently hold a SSHRC postdoc, so the odds of one of the winners being from your committee aren't great. Your best hope is that someone gets a job! Good luck. You might not hear until June or even later. I supervised a SSHRC funded postdoc who didn't hear until late summer the year she got it and came off the alternate list' Updated .message: I'm in a similar situation. I am first in committee 3 and I cannot find a job or a postdoc .. however I think we should forget about the sshrc postdoc, we don't even know when the alternates will happen. Some received alternates in september, there's a whole lot of time from now to september, we can't sit there and wait.. Its definitely better to forget about it than be reminded of it constantly. I did send an appeal too but I am not hoping much from it.

That's amazing congrats! I am still looking but I am bound to Toronto because of family. It decreases my chances to find a job tremendously. There has been 1 decline in committee 6 that I know of, if you are next in line you might get it, if you do get it let us know here please!
-
That's amazing! Did you find out which rank you were here? There's still the possibility to get an alternate, but taking a full time position would be way better.

Hello everyone, the deadline to decline/accept was yesterday. Did anyone hear of a decline? There has been declines in 2B and in 6.
-
Hello everyone! Was anyone here successful?
-
Hello everyone. I got confirmation from a sshrc worker that there is indeed a waitlist, and that if someone declines, the offer goes to the next in rank. The offer stays within the committee. If anyone knows about declines please post it here for those who are on the waitlist
-
Hello! Were you first on the waitlist?
-
Thats amazing! Congrats

Hello everyone, I've made this post due to the immense confusion I got when I received the letter from the sshrc postdoc competition. It says there are alternate awards, but with vague details on how or when they are offered. They also emphasize that there is No waitlist. This is the info they send by email to whomever asks about alternate awards: "SSHRC retains a pool of alternate candidates recommended for funding by committee members in the event that additional funds become available. In addition, the funding provided by SSHRC’s partners in the context of joint initiatives may occasionally allow us to offer awards to meritorious candidates who indicated interest at the time of application but who were not offered an award. SSHRC cannot predict if and when additional offers can be made, as these offers depend on a variety of factors which change from year to year. In the event that funding becomes available, offers will be made in such a way as to maintain the success rate across the selection committees." Is there a waitlist? If somebody declines their award does it go to the next in rank? Are the alternate awards made after the deadline for accepting/declining the award or are they made during a specific period, like specifically in september? Would greatly appreciate the insights! This post could also help future applicants understand what all this means.

Sorry i forgot to quote you in the previous post

Hello! What was the reason for declining if I may ask? Did you find another postdoc?
