My $0.02 as an immigrant: Firstly, you really have good English... judging from your post. Maybe I'm not in a position to say this but I dare to assert that most would agree. And your English will indded improve like a miracle when you come here. Secondly, don't worry about accent. Cultural linguistically, EVERYONE has an accent. By living here stateside for 5 years, I can roughly tell the difference between, say, northern accents and southern accents, or a Chicagoan one and a Bostonian one (where I happen to be staying a bit longer). Yes there are socially sanctioned accents but no one is exempted from an accent. If you still want to "reduce" your accent, I would recommend you take a look at this book: American Accent Training: A Guide to Speaking and Pronouncing American English for Everyone Who Speaks English as a Second Language I used it and it works pretty well. (And if you are unable to purchase this book overseas, *cough* *cough* there are electronic copies and MP3 recording floating around.) Thirdly, you may want to improve your conversational skills but honestly it's not something can be done well out of the linguistic environment. I will suggest, as many already said, watching some TV shows. Given that you are coming to New York, why not Sex and the City, haha And in the end, congratulations and wish you alllll the best

It really sounds like East Asian applicants are not as many as I thought..
-
Definitely a piece of good news. Congratulations ha
-
I don't know if I should say it's fine or congratulations. But good news is always good news. Hope there would be more to you. And wish the same for me... I'm getting anxious...
-
Congratulations! HEAL is an extremely competitive program and I didn't even want to bother. And I really really glad that we are not applying to the same program haha
-
Harvard's HEAL program take its East Asian Program's quota.. no worries
-
That's what I have gathered. Correct me if I'm wrong: Yale's deadline was Dec 15 for 2010 and 2011 fall and Jan 1 for 2009 but it maintained a similar timeframe of notification in 2010 and 2009. I guess we should hear soon too.
-
and Yale and Stanford maybe THIS week
-
I plan to double in JD I have long concerned about legal history and the relationship between law and modernity. No one's doing that in Yale in the East Asian realm but I can consider to jump ship to the western side if chances permit XD Just a plan.. i admit I'm a fickle person but it's better to have choice in hand
-
This is gonna hurt a lot I really don't care - no match anyways but I'm afraid this translates into 1 out of my 6 most important schools gone XD I'm counting my chances haha
-
I regretted I even bothered to apply
-
Oh No... I'm not checking this forum any more ..
-
lol actually I put in my SOP that my ancestors were heavy weights in the Hundred Days' Reform (the Chinese Meiji Restoration) which initiated Chinese modernity and I wanted to study modern Chinese history on modernity, or in other words my own family (jk)
-
This is really really strange... I'm thinking if I should check this forum any longer... it doesn't help anymore but only adds pressure on my little nerves
-
Totally agree.. just one school with funding .. just one .... I guess I'm not too greedy for I've applied for sooo many.
-
I check past years' data and it seems Chicago sent out admissions in one batch. I'm very surprised why this came so early and growing anxious for my own fate now
-
Congratulations too. This is a really good program.. And I'm growing alittle bit anxious...... I wish I could get in. Oh my mirror: tell me if I'm the most admitted man!
-
You are absolutely right, only if my last name was not Shang, haha. As by legend, my last name didn't come from those earlier Shang people, but instead, from the (arguably) the most important single person involved in overthrowing the Shang dynasty. I guess my lineage is not on good terms with the oracles. But I will definitely try some Chinese Divinations.
-
I apply for history programs only.. no interest in east Asian studies... I doubt if I would get into Yale, not a good match (not bad match either) but I would definite do if I'm in haha I will be in desperate need of gossip once I'm in:) I didn't get a letter asking me if I'd like to be transferred to east Asian masters. So sounds like I still (can) have a shot in And of course good luck to your applications as well.
-
This sounds right to me... By the way just realized you are applying to Chinese history as well. Glad we have only one overlap
-
Congratulations first. After all, a two year offer is good news.. And btw, there's still no news for me. I guess I'm perishing in a lacking of news... AFAIK, when we are asked about such questions, we are expected to elaborate our answer a little bit, e.g. giving out details in a clear and concise way, although I doubt if it is an interview in disguise anyway.
-
I have noticed a reject from Yale in the survey from an "inside contact." Just FYI.
-
I don't know if HYP will offer any interview. I don't think so but I can be wrong. I didn't go for Oxbridge. I once planned to but was not really in the mood to prepare any application in January after the long vacation and I've applied to too many anyways so I gave them up
