  1. I'm in at 2 places now and I'm realizing I will have to spend my whole summer reading to feel like I can even deal with grad school. I am excited to learn, but worry about looking dumb when talking to profs or other students and they know about people I may only have heard of. Oh and right now I teach undergrad (randomly... in a field I did major in) and have IS every day I teach. If anyone were to ask pointed questions I'd probably break down.
  2. Single and on the prowl for intelligent, sensitive, handsome grad student.
  3. I'm trying to figure out what to wear as well... I can't go for the official recruitment thing, so I may be going either on a normal day OR on the day the dept is holding a conference. I'm thinking khaki chinos and a sweater (same thing I usually wear to teach) is the best bet either way, with brown tennis shoes (the sort that are like semi-dressy, I guess? In a way...) or hiking boots if it's cold there. I might blow dry my hair for the occasion, though I usually let it air dry.
  4. Hahaha, we can only hope I was more considerate. It is an awkward note to write...

    Vancouver, BC

Hey, I live just south of the border from Vancouver and it is gorgeous up here, for sure. One thing I hate about going up there, though, is the traffic. It's a city designed best for walking/biking. Avoid cars at all costs!
  6. Ok, so I applied to 5 PhD programs and 5 MA programs. I got accepted with funding to one of the PhD programs! Now, 2ish of those MA programs I know I would not attend for sure, should I not say anything and let them make their decisions, or save them the trouble of reviewing my app and let them know?
  7. The problem with the Sidekick 2008 (I have one) is that it doesn't have push email, so you don't get updates right away, which is problematic when you want to know right away when you have emails!
  8. Got an unexpected early acceptance today, and here's what I did: 1. Freak out as word is opening the attached file called "mylastname accept". 2. Skim quickly as heart goes wild. 3. Call Mom. 4. Text bff. 5. Post on GradCafe.
  9. Ooh, yeah, a trip to the interwebs to buy school related items is a must.
  10. 3 acceptances/successful waitlists 3 unsuccessful waitlists/no funding 4 rejections 3/10... I have several MA programs so I'm hoping they come through for me!

    Burlington, VT

Anyone know anything about South Royalton, where Vermont Law School is?
  12. So... I also took it last year and had new reports sent out this year. I could have sworn that my AW %-ile was 89 and when I got the receipt this time it said 90. I live 1500 miles away from my old receipt so I can't check that, but I self-reported 89th on all the apps. I thought maybe I was just crazy?
  13. I see. I worked as an intern for a Chief IT Architect last summer for a State, but as a philosophy student I don't get to whip out the IT knowledge much
  14. Geographic Information Sciences, I think...
  15. Same here, I start teaching again on Tuesday and I can't wait to be busy!
  16. I used the Kaplan Vocab book that has flash-card type pages and literally learned/memorized (whatever you want to say) all of the 500 words and very few of them were on my tests. There are very few questions ultimately, so learning words is a gamble. If you have the time roots, prefixes, etc... are the way to go, but if I had it to do over I would probably just try to get a few more words and work on the reading comp more (it was my least favorite aspect of the test).
  17. I don't think there can be any hard and fast number or algorithm. In general I think it's a good idea to have the bulk be in programs you think you fit well with and have a good shot at, then 1-2 safeties if you have the money and 1-2 reaches if you have the money.
  18. How about this... make it a goal to lose 10 lbs before your first notification comes. That way it's win-win. Scenario 1: you lose the weight before your notice comes. Congrats, you are thinner and healthier! Scenario 2: You don't lose the weight but your notification comes... a. you were admitted, good for you, celebrate. b. you were not admitted, well at least you killed some time and now your crushing depression will help you lose those last 3 lbs because you won't eat anything, or alternatively, you can lose the rest between now and the next notification. I need to lose some weight, I need to kill some time. I'm going for it.
  19. It seems like science programs are the first to notify, followed by social science and humanities.
  20. I had the opposite problem, low test scores (590Q 600V) and high AW (5.5... though I thought I would get a 6...). I thought about taking the test again a couple times (that was in fall 07), but it was just too expensive and the computer format didn't really match well with my test-taking style (I have to skip around). I did really well on the ACT back in the day and have taken and gotten As in tons of math classes, so I know I'm capable of a better score.
  21. Nothing that crazy for me yet... I did have a dream that the adcomm for one of my schools came to my house (which in the dream, btw, was not my house, I have no clue where I was) to do an interview and then I fell asleep on the couch while they discussed me in the kitchen. Then last night I dreamt my new roommate at grad school was Sarah Silverman, which you would think would be a good and hilarious dream, but she had a huge live grasshopper collection and I have irrational deathly fear of those things. So, I guess I'm just going wild in dream world for now.
