  1. I turned down an offer from University of Illinois at Chicago and am praying to get in off the waitlist at UVa. Is there a specified hour for the April 15th deadline? Midnight on EST?
  2. Anyone turning down UVA?
  3. Sorry to hear that Leto. They should be obligated to offer you admission just on the basis of that mistake.
  4. I highly suspect that admission via the website as false. I´ve only seen UVA contact admits through phone and email. I´m another waitlister at UVA. I suspect there is probably 10 of us or so? Who knows what will happen this year, but I´ve heard in recent years there has been a lot of movement on the list. I´ll be headed there if I end up getting the offer. Good luck to the other waitlisters!
  5. Cicada123--Who was the person you contacted at CUNY to get application feedback?
  6. Good point.
  7. So when is this mass email coming? Let´s get this over with already.
  8. I just received an email saying that I was put on the waitlist. Someone said the top waitlisters were invited to the visiting weekend so maybe I´m farther down on the list? The email said there are 12 funded spots this year. This is my top choice so hopefully some of the lucky admitted ones choose elsewhere!
  9. I received one of the acceptances. There is no information in the letter on the number of those accepted. The funding is 16k for the first year while teaching one class a semester. Then for subsequent years its 19k for teaching two classes a semester with guaranteed seven years of funding. It doesn´t look like there is an official admit weekend but they encourage visitors to come before April 8th. I was completely resigned to all rejections so this was an amazing surprise.
  10. Man sending out rejections on a Friday night is not cool
  11. I'm seeing some rejection emails on the results board. Is CUNY done sending out acceptances? Do you admits have any info on number admitted?
  12. I'm definitely beginning to feel like maybe my interests weren't clear enough or my fit paragraph in my SOP was too general. Or perhaps they are just reading my writing sample and thinking "Huh?" Even though there are many stories of people doing multiple rounds of applications and feel like if I end up getting all rejections that I would rather take it as a sign to pursue a different field.
  13. I'm curious to see if many of the admits have their M.A. or not.
  14. That was a rough day with several schools sending out emails. I'm glad that one is over.
  15. Seems like a nice way to get away from the craziness... I could use a long walk: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/08/a-pilgrimage-walk-to-sant_n_820079.html
  16. I definitely didn't expect two of my tops (Chicago and CUNY) to start sending out acceptances on the same day. That's just too much
  17. Congrats to whoever got the Berkeley acceptance! I didn't apply there but I did my undergrad at Cal. I love those professors.
  18. That poor Grad Director at Duke is now going to receive many emails asking what was wrong with their application. What can one say with an acceptance rate of 4%? I suppose we did pay 70 dollars or whatever the application fee was. Those application fees are large enough that they should give us some feedback.
  19. Does anyone know if PhD programs require new grad students to show up prior to the start of the semester or quarter in the fall? Or is the first day of classes usually the first required day to be there? I'm trying to plan my schedule for a summer job. I'm sure each program is different but are people generally planning on being available late-August at the earliest? (This is of course all dependent on being lucky enough to get into a program.)
  20. Who's going to claim those Duke acceptances?
  21. Looks like the morning wave of notices is going out. I just got my rejection letter.
  22. Is the interview in-person or over the phone?
  23. Congrats to all those granted interviews. I'm sure many of us would be interested to hear what your stats and research interest is if any of you are willing to share. Good luck with the interviews!
  24. It's certainly not the smartest idea, but I wonder if it is still possible to do. I might not be able to travel during summer. Basically I want to avoid being forced to buy an international flight to the U.S. after finding out that some welcome weekend is absolutely mandatory.
  25. Since I am recently unemployed and will hopefully be starting a graduate program in the fall I'm thinking about taking some time to travel right now until summer. But I wonder if I will miss any important orientation or welcome weekends or for that matter if there will be any unexpected interviews. I thought none of my schools did interviews but read in another forum that NYU did in-person interviews last year. Any thoughts on if it is a good idea to go away for a couple of months. I'll still have access to email and a phone so I'm thinking it would work out.
