  1. How many graduate students here will be starting their programs without a car? Since I wasn't too successful finding a job for the summer, my plans to purchase a used car is still up in the air right now, especially since I'm thinking about how to handle all the initial costs I will have to deal with when I move in August. I will be living in Nashville, which is not the most car-friendly of all places, but the upside is that I will be living very close to campus and there is an adequate public transportation system if I need it. I am not too sure about groceries and other places where I will need to purchase items, but I'm hoping they are not too far away. I'm also nervous about how to go about hanging out with fellow students in my program without a car.

But anyway, I was hoping that I would hear from others who will most likely not have their own transportation off the bat. How do you plan on commuting? Do you plan on purchasing a car when you get settled in? My plan is to maybe wait a couple months and see if I can get a used car, but I'm not sure if that will work out. There is a little bit of pressure on my end since my roommate doesn't have a license and isn't from the States so it will take her a while also if she ever plans on searching for a vehicle. I'm trying not to stress myself out over the transportation issue but the older I get (almost 24), the more responsibility I feel to purchase a car so I can be more dependent and be able to go wherever I want to, especially as a graduate student. But maybe I'm just being too hard on myself.

It would be nice to also hear from graduate students who do have experience going without a car. Thanks!

Well I decided to buy a brand new car after I graduated from my undergrad because I was rejected by most of my grad schools and didn't have hope for the last one. However, I was accepted and I'm definitely going. I'm going to school in a city that has a subway though so I'll be fine (I think). I asked my professors at my current school if it was required by them when they were in their grad program (clinicals and externships) and they said not until their 2nd year. I'm going to keep paying my auto loan and see if I do need my car later but I think because I'm in a metro area I'll be okay.

  2. I'll be honest -- I thought I was pretty competitive.. I have the saaaame stats & I was rejected to every school that I applied to. 5 schools in NY 1 in GA and one in SD. I'm super depressed but I'm looking to do some volunteer work (but no one wants to take me on..) and I'm going to retake GREs & rewrite my SOP. I had volunteer experience teaching kids/adult classes and research experience. I'm still going to apply next year, no harm in trying.. but I'm going to check out other programs too.

    Hello everyone,

I am applying to grad programs this summer for the following spring. I have a fairly low gpa overall of 3.3 and a gpa in CSD of 3.45. I am looking for some easy schools around PA or the northeast. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to apply? I have lookied into different programs but I want to see if anyone had any advice on where to look or previous experience from where they were accepted. Please let me know. Thanks!

  3. Do you mind my asking which programs you applied to?

    Hi,

I applied for Fall 2011 with a GPA lower than yours. I got into my top-choice school, along with half of the schools I applied to. I really think my GRE scores and my LORs made up for my low GPA. Also, I have research experience and volunteered/shadowed at a speech center for a while. Study hard for the GREs and look for relevant research/clinical experience. It is definitely do-able with a low GPA and excellent LORs and SOP. It's not JUST about GPA :)

  4. Although gradcafe did increase my stress level, it did help me gauge my results. Before I even knew about this site, I got accepted to one school on 1/31, which is VERY early. Since that acceptance, I checked the board and read info on the 4 other schools I applied to. Others were getting accepted and I had not heard anything. I figured that that meant that I was either waitlisted or rejected, which I was...The fact of the matter is that if I had not been accepted to one school so early on, the past 3 months would have been hell for me.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but has anyone not been accepted anywhere yet? I am only asking b/c it seems like everyone here has been accepted to at least one school...

I've been rejected by 5 schools, waiting on 3 still. No good news yet, and i thought I was competitive for where I had applied

  5. Hey have you had any changes?

no still nothing! i had a dream last night that someone updated on grad cafe and said they were accepted-- ugh! i'm feeling like a loser. I'm really hoping I get into this school, as it's my top choice... gah! what about you still waiting on others?

  6. Valdosta said in the beginning of april we should hear. If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats?

Gahh I want to know now. I'm only waiting on them and 2 more schools at this time. 1010 on the GRE & 3.5 in the major, 3.3 overall.

  7. Hi everyone,

Any new decisions? I am still waiting on Georgia State and have a bad feeling since I still have not heard anything. My husband has a great job in Atlanta and we have a house, so it's the only school I applied to.

    still watiing on valdosta!!

  8. Is it just me or does getting into a program seem near impossible? The stats people are putting up, that have been accepted, are so impressive. I feel like if you don't have an amazing GPA and GRE scores, you're not getting in anywhere.

It depends on the year. It must be impossible to get into a program (at least for me). I didn't do poorly in any of my core classes and I've been a part of research projects, taught kids, worked for a while, and babysit kids with DD.. Doesn't seem to help.
