i'd recommend reaching out to the chair of your program to clarify! i had a similar thing happen with two of my schools, where the official offer letter only had scholarship information, but my full offer actually included a TAship as well. so, once i reached out to the respective chairs, they were able to tell me the scope of what was included in my package. hope this helps!

heard back from my last school today, so i wanted to give my wrap up: BU (visual narrative): accepted 2/19 with 40% merit scholarship SAIC (comics): accepted 2/ with 50% scholarship (pritzer graduate 50% fellowship) WashU St Louis (illustration + visual culture): accepted 3/2 with sam fox ambassadors fellowship (100% tuition scholarship + small travel stipend) overall super happy with my results (even if i'm slightly sad i didn't get the fellowship WashU has that offers a stipend..but again, so grateful for what i got). i'm gonna mull it over to make sure, but most likely i'll be moving to st louis in the fall :-) good luck everyone still waiting to hear back!!! it only takes one yes! o7

i think part of it is that SAIC is an art school who doesn't guarantee funding (or really scholarships of any kind) to their prospective students--they're just interesting in getting people in. (now that's obviously not to say that there isn't rigor involved both in the vetting of applicants or in the quality of the education you'd get there...but they do need X amount of students to pay tuition in order to keep everything operating). i applied to SAIC for a different MFA (for comics--i like keeping up in both the threads), and i had an interview and had the head of the department call me, but a.) i had been chosen for a merit scholarship, and b.) i think it really depends department to department. compared to say, a research institution with an english department, i have to imagine that the size of the creative writing department at SAIC is a bit smaller. all this being said though, i would totally reach out to the head of the department to set up some kind of call/zoom meeting, just to get a sense of the program a bit more. i think it's understandable to have some warning signs going up, but hopefully talking to them would give you a better clue on what decision to make. good luck!

i had my interview with washU IVC on january 28th (they had reached out to me on monday the 26th) and i just got a phone call this afternoon from john hendrix with "really good news" but i didn't see it when he was calling, so i called and left a message and am waiting to hear back (ššš). they had told me in the interview that they'd be releasing all their decisions on march 1st i believe (that's the impression i got--could be wrong). not sure what that says, but i'm wishing you the best of luck too!!

for me, when i open the decision letter in the SAIC grad portal, i can scroll down and see the scholarship letter under the decision (though, it doesn't look like it's including any FAFSA-related stuff?). you could also reach out to the grad admissions office if you want to double check though

just got a call from the comics chair at SAIC and they said i was accepted with a 50% merit scholarship!! (specifically for their comics MFA). waiting until march 1st to see what my offer's like from washU (ivc)... hoping to negotiate with SAIC further since i've had a really great experience thru the interview so far, and chicago seems awesome...but the price tag is still too much for sure š š

its also my first cycle, but from what i've read in forums from previous years is that it's definitely possible to negotiate your offer, particularly if you get a stronger offer from another school with more funding...but, whether or not they can actually give you more funding is another story. think it's worth asking either way, even if the conclusion is "sorry, this is the best we can do". (i also think best practice is to negotiate before accepting the offer--you can express your interest in the program while negotiating, but i'd imagine its more persuasive to ask for more funding before agreeing to their original offer). again, haven't done it yet myself, so this is just based on what i've seen other people say haha

i had my interview on february 9th! they told me i'd hear back "in the next few weeks" (with march 15 as a hard deadline on their end), so i was not expecting to hear back so quickly LOL

just got notified via email that i got into BU (visual narrative) with a 40% merit scholarship! i think unfortunately with the cost (even with the scholarship) and the program itself, i most likely won't be accepting...but soothing to know i got in somewhere i guess haha. i'm assuming that all the departments have different timelines so, can only speak for my own experience

have my last two interviews today (BU - visual narrative and SAIC - comics), and then it'll be back to the full freakout waiting to hear back from all three of my schools š happy that i've gotten interviews with all of them but we'll see how the financial aid turns out i guess š good luck everyone!!!

yes, definitely š despite the name of the forum i still underestimated how this stage would feel LOL. keep trying to remind myself that i did the best that i could and am trying to keep myself busy...but every time i see an email notification from one of the schools i applied to (that ends up being some kind of promotional or reminder email) it takes some years off of my life for sure š BUT ITLL BE OKAY...itll be okay. we're all in this together š¤

hmm, i feel like it depends on if you're a morning person or not--for me i feel like waking up early for 5am would be easier than staying up until 2am, but that could just be me LOL. congrats on your interview requests, i hope both go well!!

congrats!! not sure about OSU specifically, but here's a frankenstein'ed list i found and copied from one of the previous forum years...the main questions i feel like come up again and again are "why grad school now?", "why this particular program?" (would be good to mention specific faculty/facilities if they connect with your practice), and then questions related to your artistic practice (like "what are you reading now?", "how do you want your work to develop?", "can you explain [piece in your portfolio]?"). they definitely can't ask *all* of these questions though, haha (but, kinda fun to think about the hypothetical answers--also, haven't done any interviews for schools myself, so take these with a grain of salt) Common Questions Visual Arts Applicants are Asked During an Interview How does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene? Why do you want to go to XXXXX? Why do you want to go to grad school? Why now? What resources of this program will be the biggest benefit to your development as an artist? What is your work about? What are your influences? What for you constitutes a good work of art? What draws you to a piece of work? What motivates your work? Who are your main influences? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? How does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene? What do you think is a good critique of your work/bad critique? Why/how did you choose the people who wrote letters for you? How will you contribute to this program? What do you do for fun? What artists do you like? (you can have a list prepared) What artists who are no longer living influence you? What book are you reading right now? What do you think about it? What are you working on right now? happy new year! and good luck to everyone (and especially anyone who's finishing up their apps š®āšØ). i just finished my last one--ended up only applying to 3 this year focusing on illustration/comics programs. if i don't get in (/secure the needed funding) this round i'll probably continue to hone my portfolio and apply a bit broader for round 2, but we'll see how it goes this time... also just noting for anyone in the future--i applied to WashU for free (was free before december 15th), SAIC for 50% (you can pay the application fee before the application's done, so i did that while they were offering it at half price ($45 vs $90)), and BU for free (requested a fee waiver and it was suuuper easy, didn't have to prove my income or anything). honored to freak out with you all this cycle š«”

Hiii! Finally making an account to post for the upcoming cycle after going through so many of the old ones haha. Paying it forward to future sleuths like meā¦ Iām gonna be mainly applying to painting/drawing programsāright now the only exception is WashU St Louisā Illustration MFA, maybe Iāll add another illo one in there. One of my biggest priorities is going into as little debt as possible (preferably none! Regret the amount I went into for undergrad), but unfortunately thereās soooo few illustration programs that offer any sort of funding. The WashU IVC funding isnāt guaranteed, but the Sam Fox school seems to offer a pretty generous amount of funding if youāre lucky (and plus the faculty seem really great!). Like, SVAās illo MFA is probably the most well known, but the amount of funding they give to students is like 20 cents and some moths floating out of their wallet, lol. Might apply to RISDās illo program too..? (Iāve at least Heard of grad students getting substantial aid there, whether or not itās likely is a different storyā¦) I did my undergrad in illustration + have a predominantly illustration portfolio, but I think long term Iād really like to pivot to more gallery / fine artwork (or at least do some dual-wielding) along with teaching. So Iām gonna be grinding out new work between now and when apps are due. I feel like thatās the biggest barrier between me and applying to more programs, LOL. BUT, assuming I can create enough stuff, the painting/general studio art programs Iām looking at are: BU UW-Madison UConn Northwestern Michigan State University Tyler WashU St Louis (again, for their studio art sideāI like the vibe Iāve gotten from their website at least) I feel like this list will end up changing by the endā¦Iāve been in the northeast my whole life, so Iām ideallyyyy looking for something close, but different enough. Iāve seen great things about the UC schools (Davis, Santa Barbara, etc.) in past years of forum threads, and I know Caliās popping off for contemporary art stuff, so I might end up applying to one of those (Main thing keeping me away are the app fees for UCs--$135?!?). One of the profs Iām gonna ask for a LOR from went to OSU, so that program may end up making my list as well. I know a lot of folks apply to Yale, but honestly I just donāt know if itād be my kind of place. Love and light to the folks who are gonna apply there, more power and luck to ya! Excited to see who else pops on here as we get closer to the actual app cycleāwishing everybody good luck, and plenty of funded programs to choose from!! o7
