  6. OT, but good luck with your applications! I go to the gym with the director of the CMES... really great guy! I can highly recommend that program just because of their excellent faculty!

  8. Yeah Mazar has been doing guest lecturing there for awhile, I am hoping he still will if/when I get to the school. He is still one of the best people for an overall understanding of the Levant and the "big picture". I've actually been re-reading his book about the levant and its layout, politics, etc. Great stuff. I honestly was bored to death when I read it 11 years ago in my undergrad, but I am loving it now but that is because I finally understand the lay of the land and how everything relates geographically so it makes what he says a lot more relevant. Best of luck to you in your programs, that is certainly the second most interesting field of archaeology!! Just kidding!
  9. Levantine Archaeology, specifically Late Bronze and Iron Age Transjordan. I'm applying to UCSD, there are several reasons that make this school the best match for me, but basically its the coming together of a good professor and great interdisciplinary research happening. I would actually be doing something that meshes IT with archaeology, since that is already what I've been doing over the last few years (I have been in the field now for several years, working in the Amman region, and for the last few seasons I've been specializing in GIS and database techniques for my project). I see you are applying (I assume, have applied) to Chicago. Are you doing NELC? My wife is a PhD student at UChicago, nearing completion! Any word on your apps yet?
  10. Right.. I feel that this is a really good sign. Like I said before, I feel like I'm cheating because this professor and I have had plenty of contact before I even applied. Whatever the case, he spent more time talking about my possible research possibilities at the school rather than if I'm in or not. Yay! I'm pretty excited, the interview will happen in February on campus... can't wait!
  11. I just finished talking to the professor. I should add that this professor and I have been in contact off and on throughout this whole process. We know each other from work in the field (archaeology) so I do somewhat have a head start on this whole process. Anyway, he elaborated a bit on what he hoped my research will look like in the program and he wants me to come out for an interview in February with the department and some of the other programs I'd be involved with. So, positive call in the end! *sigh of relief*
  12. I'm very nervous, the professor I'm hoping to study with e-mailed and asked to talk to me, but gave me no other information. I'm currently and officially nervous and freaking out. I really wish that he would have just inserted a nice little "by the way, your app was great" OR "by the way, I want to call to say I'm sorry you didn't get in...." something, anything, please... don't ask for my number and then wait to call me... call right away... PLEASE.... *sigh*
  13. So anyone else waiting to hear from UCSD's social science's division??? we can commiserate together...
  14. Speaking of mail... it is really funny that other people get excited about snail mail. My program application specifically said I will be notified by e-mail... doesn't change the fact that the day AFTER I hit submit on the online application I was eagerly checking my mailbox... like I'm going to find this magic acceptance letter that some how moved through the Chicago postal system in record time. Yeah right. But faithfully every day around 3:00pm I am antsy and I eyeball the postwoman coming down the walk and then storm my mailbox only to angrily tear up 2 or 3 credit card offers... arggghhhh!!!! I want to hear SOMETHING... ANYTHING!
  15. I'm so glad to see that other people are going through the same! I've been waiting desperately for some insight into what is going on with my application. I only applied to one school due to the advice of several people in my field of interest who also are close to my POI. The POI actually reviewed my application before I submitted it too, but he has only ever been enigmatic about whether or not I will actually get in. I'm suffering. The funny thing is, I am fine if I don't get in. I have a great job, and working with a startup company could offer the promise of great financial rewards if I stick with them. On the flip side, I'd love the study track more. So... I'm sitting here running in circles about something I can't even decide yet!!! AAAGGGHHH!!!! I feel like I'm 5 in the back of the car asking... "Are we there yet?!"
