  1. I would also note that I tried to turn them down via email, was told I had to mail in my non-acceptance of their non-acceptance, and then realized that they did not provide return postage! So basically, "Thank you for your application fee. We have, in turn, accepted you to our cash cow of a consolation program. Oh yeah, and could you give us a couple quarters?"
  2. I think this (in addition to all of the other helpful bits and pieces on this thread) has helped me decide, so thanks!
  3. I too am a little terrified of the expected teaching load at CUNY. I was accepted to the English department with an EC fellowship, which involves a 2/2 teaching load for three years. I would love to get an idea of how many students would be in a section, if this ranges depending on whether you're teaching comp or a seminar, and how much work it is to do so on top of everything else. I know some of these questions have already been answered, but if you have a different experience (or even the same experience) I would love to hear about it.
  4. I'm going to Thailand for a month with my roomate(s). I've been planning to go for a year and a half now and saving up money, so I'm pretty excited.
  5. Every school where I've applied has notified their accepted students, but there are 6 that from which I personally haven't heard squat. I assume these are rejections and am ready to move on with my life, but I would really like to know for sure. So my questions are: When it is acceptable to email a DGS and ask about the decision? Is it better to call? And if it's better to email, how should I word my request? Thanks!
  6. Is this CUNY's normal procedure? My understanding was that the annual cohort tends to be closer to 20 than 40.
  7. I'm sorry; I didn't mean to take away hope! Best of luck and keep us posted on how it goes.
  8. To the person who just posted on the results board: did you call and someone told you? Or are you a student at Yale currently? Basically, how do you know?
  9. To be honest--and I don't mean to be a buzz-kill--that sounds like an unofficial wait list. So if a couple people in your field decide not to go, they'll probably give you the spot (hence the rolling nature of future decisions). Did he give you any idea of when the latest possible time you would hear might be? Because if it's not late March/ early April, then I'm probably wrong.
  10. I just got waitlisted. Apparently the list is pretty short -- 11 people -- and they've accepted 28 people for 15 spots. Also, (and I know this is tacky but...) can anyone who got accepted tell me what the funding package looks like?
  11. Mwah mwah mwaaaaah (that is the sound of me losing all hope). Oh well; thanks for the info.
  12. Thanks for the quick reply and congratulations! Do you happen to have any info on how many acceptances, if they're notifying everyone today, etc.?
  13. Phone acceptance. Anyone want to claim it?
  14. Whoops- guess I'm wrong. I have the day off from work on Monday, but I'm definitely glad to hear, in this specific instance, that most/all schools don't. Here's hoping some beneficent Rutgers person puts me out of my misery as early as Monday.
  15. Monday is a holiday, so I would guess it wouldn't be until Tuesday. (I don't want to be a smartass or anything; I just want to make sure you're not spending a day agonizing when you're almost definitely not going to hear.)
  16. That's starting already? Yikes. Also, congratulations! Does anyone want to claim it?
  17. I'm not! Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I just don't think they've made all their decisions. There would be more than two results up if they had. I guess all I'm saying is we'll have plenty of time to feel downtrodden when we actually get rejected; why bring it on ourselves earlier than we have to?
  18. I'm with you. I know someone applying for economics PhD programs and he said the same result came up on the economics results board, on the same day.
  19. My thoughts exactly. This is the email I wrote my boyfriend after seeing the second call (censored for those with more tender ears): Subject: WOW Yale decisions are going out Right f***ing now. People are getting calls. I know I probably won't get one. I know that it's not even a good choice for me. But it's Yale. Mother****ing Yale.
  20. Seriously! I mean, that's it, right? How big is the Michigan cohort? If we see four acceptances on this board alone, it's got to be over. Counterpoint: this discussion board reminded me that I should probably check to see if they had my transcript, since it still said it was missing on the website. I called the English department, she asked for my name, and said that they did have my transcript. They would have told me then I had been rejected if it was official, right? Maybe Psych PhD applicants have more insight into all this... Probably not, though.
  21. Just saw the first NYU result--a rejection via the website. Sorry to pour salt on the wound, but does anyone want to claim it? And if so, did you get an email first? And which website did you visit? I just checked the one that confirms the department received all relevant materials, and couldn't find any indication of applications status there.
  22. That was me. I'm on the east coast too, and I got it around 9. FYI, here is the information about the fellowship: The ECF also comes with a service requirement in all five years. During the first year, you will serve as a research assistant, with a maximum workload of 7.5 hours a week. In years two through four, you will be awarded a Graduate Teaching Fellowship to teach at one of the CUNY undergraduate colleges. The colleges are located in all five boroughs of New York City. Graduate Teaching Fellows teach a total of 180 hours during the academic year, usually by teaching the equivalent of two 3-credit courses each semester. In year five, you will receive a non-teaching fellowship (such as a College Writing Fellowship) that will involve working with faculty at one of the colleges for 15 hours a week over the course of each semester. I hope you get funding! Good luck!
  23. We could ask the student from whom we received that email about personal statements. My friend (who is currently at Michigan) said that last year everybody got funding, even though they said everyone might not. And yes, I do think everyone can get set up with a teaching internship if they don't get a fellowship, and I also think that that person would then have to reapply for some sort of funding the year after. As for budgetary issues, you're totally right. I'm guessing, in fact, that that's why they will have to wait until March to be sure.
