  1. Hi ! that was a quote from an e-mail I received from a faculty member. We are not eligible for any of the training grants which fund many PhD students in the US.Moreover funding has been extremely tight this year.
  2. Hi Classmate! ( Hopefully,if I get my visa )
  3. Great to hear from you! Hope I get to meet you somewhere...a conference perhaps...But how would I know you are zose? Thanks once again for the great advice.Best wishes for a great time at Harvard!
  4. Hi Zose, just wanted to know what you decided finally.I might make it to Pittsburgh thanks to your advice.
  5. I have noted that those accepted into the biostats dept at Hopkins seem to be getting full funding including stipend [ results page] while an epidemiology admittance does not guarantee this.An idea why this is so?
  6. "Foreigners can only be hired (a) as GSRs on federal grants, or (b on pharma studies. The difficulty is not because you are not a competitive candidate but because NIH is funding far fewer grants than before and when they do so they cut at least 20% from the proposed budget. In the old days (not that long ago) people had more money. Also, if you had a green card you would easily get into a training grant which would pay your tuition fees and a stipend." Now I am wishing I had a green card.Whatever that is. I started the whole application process thinking PhD meant automatic funding..... Has funding become difficult for US citizens also? Or is it just for international students?
  7. Hi Zose! Thanks for the timely advice...I am going to do just that. Will keep you updated. Which school have you finally decided on?
  8. I am from a developing country and I don't want to share my concentration as the admission process is not complete yet. No info on funding still. Do you have any other acceptances with funding? Do you know of any university which would automatically fund all accepted students(including internationals) - maybe I will try next year Received rejection from UNC too today.Only Berkeley left. I dont think there's any hope there either...
  9. Thanks for sharing ! Yes,I was told that this was the most competitive year for Epi PhD at Hopkins.7 years in research is unbeatable. I have been mostly in programme management and teaching [in a developing country] though I have done some research and published too.I was hoping to make a career switch to research. I have not received any funding from the two universities that have accepted me and therefore might not finally come over there [ I assume you are from the US] Are you aware of any university which would fund all the candidates they accept, including international students? Maybe I will apply next time...
  10. Congrats on your acceptance Zose. I have 2 acceptances but Hopkins,of course was the dream. I am an international student and had an interview with a Hopkins professor over the phone towards the end of January.Rejection after interview feels doubly bad. Could you share your stats if you don't mind?
  11. I discovered gradcafe after submitting applications.Have been greatly encouraged, enlightened and entertained by the posts. I am an international student and don't know any other US gradschool applicant - but hey, this is my team...
  12. Check the results page on gradcafe - at least two acceptances and several rejections reported for PhD epidemiology at Hopkins
  13. I have seen lot of results for PhD epid at Hopkins lately. Those of you who have been rejected/accepted - was this after an interview? Did you get an official email ? Did your status change on the application site? I have no info and am wondering........
  14. epi_man, did you get a GSR position at Pittsburgh? I have no news on funding yet.
  15. Rejected by Emory.Accepted at Pittsburgh.Waiting on the others.
  16. Thanks to all posters above, I have evidence that I am normal. My husband thinks I've gone crazy, the way I check my mail and gradcafe obsessively. But then he is the one who wakes up at 5 am [i am an international student in Asia ] to check whether someone mailed in the night....;-)
  17. Is tomorrow the day?

  18. Hi,I have shared in another thread but will repeat it for you. The interviewer was very friendly but I had difficulty understanding her accent. I just about made out what the question was. I was asked why I want to do PhD,why in this subject, why in that School, what I hoped to be when I graduate and why they should take me. No subject questions. All the best ! Be cool - you will sound better.
  19. Thanks Strangefox.I had my interview yesterday.Any idea what percentage of those called for interview get selected?
  20. Tough.Very Tough. The professor was very friendly but I had difficulty understanding the American accent. I was straining to understand what the question was and could not answer as confidently as I usually do.The main questions were about why I want to do the PhD and why they should select me.Lasted about 25 minutes. The prof said that I will be hearing from them in March.Funding is a possibility if admitted.
  21. Yes,they are. I am one and I had a telephonic interview today morning. It depends on the school also I think.
