  1. Hi! I'm a current MA student in regional studies applying for PhD programs in Anthropology. All of the programs explicitly state that a background in anthropology is not required, as long as you have social studies research experience (which I have plenty of!). Should I explain why I chose to go with anthropology? Of course, my proposed research topic is based on anthropology and my MA thesis will be written anthropologically, but do I need to be even more explicit with it?
  2. I'm working as a flight attendant and squeezing in as many trips as legally possible - thirteen countries so far, including seven I'd never been to before Making as much money as possible, which allowed me to pay off my credit card debt this week (been carrying it around for years!) and now to start saving for a terribly expensive move to NYC! I'm hoping to have enough saved by the end of the summer to cover first/last/deposit on an apartment/room, plus enough to cover moving costs and setting up in the city
  3. My undergrad thesis adviser was a PhD candidate at my school, who also worked there and taught study abroad programs (which is how I initially met him), and didn't get his PhD until after I'd already heard back from all my schools. And I got into one of my top choices with full funding. Just saying, it's not always make it or break it!
  4. My program doesn't recommend that you work in the first semester, in order to get yourself back in the mindset of school (I took off two years between undergrad and my MA), so I plan on not working that first semester and then probably finding something part-time in the second one. I'm lucky enough to have a stipend to cover living expenses and such, though.
  5. Super Critical - Arabic (Modern Standard, Egyptian, and Iraqi), Chinese (Mandarin), Dari, Farsi, Hindi, and UrduCritical - Arabic (forms other than Modern Standard, Egyptian, and Iraqi), Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese (Cantonese), Kazakh, Korean, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Tajik, Turkish, Turkmen, and Uzbek http://foreign-service.com/languages
  6. I got an email response literally three minutes after sending my confirmation email to the program director (at 10:30 at night, no less!) where she mentioned she was thrilled with my decision, blah blah, and I would be receiving information about registration soon.
  7. Hey there. Why do you say that a LAS degree would be worth the extra money at Georgetown? I'm trying to find comparisons online for the LAS programs and I'm coming up with nada!

  8. For me, it would be in a heartbeat. I was accepted to both as well, offered a small scholarship at GWU and half tuition at Georgetown, and even just that half tuition offer caused me to seriously stop and think about accepting it compared to a fully funded offer with a generous stipend at another very good school (hint: the one I eventually chose, haha).

    NYU!

Officially decided I'll be going to NYU as well
  10. I applied to 9, was accepted at 7, waitlisted at 1, rejected at 1. Obviously had I known I would've been accepted at certain schools I wouldn't have applied to my safeties (three of them were definitely safeties for me) but I wouldn't have done it any other way.

    NYU!

I'm meeting with some people in my department at NYU tomorrow so I'll hopefully be making a decision veeeery soon
  12. Did they have a priority deadline/did you apply by it? I don't even remember if they did or not, haha.
  13. Did you apply to the MA in LAS at Georgetown? Because I got an email from them about two weeks ago and the official letter in the mail on Wednesday.
  14. They offered funding (of varying levels) to the top 10 applicants they admitted, and information was sent in the official acceptance packages.
