  1. Hi! I'm a current MA student in regional studies applying for PhD programs in Anthropology. All of the programs explicitly state that a background in anthropology is not required, as long as you have social studies research experience (which I have plenty of!). Should I explain why I chose to go with anthropology? Of course, my proposed research topic is based on anthropology and my MA thesis will be written anthropologically, but do I need to be even more explicit with it?
  2. I'm working as a flight attendant and squeezing in as many trips as legally possible - thirteen countries so far, including seven I'd never been to before Making as much money as possible, which allowed me to pay off my credit card debt this week (been carrying it around for years!) and now to start saving for a terribly expensive move to NYC! I'm hoping to have enough saved by the end of the summer to cover first/last/deposit on an apartment/room, plus enough to cover moving costs and setting up in the city
  3. My undergrad thesis adviser was a PhD candidate at my school, who also worked there and taught study abroad programs (which is how I initially met him), and didn't get his PhD until after I'd already heard back from all my schools. And I got into one of my top choices with full funding. Just saying, it's not always make it or break it!
  4. My program doesn't recommend that you work in the first semester, in order to get yourself back in the mindset of school (I took off two years between undergrad and my MA), so I plan on not working that first semester and then probably finding something part-time in the second one. I'm lucky enough to have a stipend to cover living expenses and such, though.

  6. I got an email response literally three minutes after sending my confirmation email to the program director (at 10:30 at night, no less!) where she mentioned she was thrilled with my decision, blah blah, and I would be receiving information about registration soon.
  7. For me, it would be in a heartbeat. I was accepted to both as well, offered a small scholarship at GWU and half tuition at Georgetown, and even just that half tuition offer caused me to seriously stop and think about accepting it compared to a fully funded offer with a generous stipend at another very good school (hint: the one I eventually chose, haha).

    NYU!

Officially decided I'll be going to NYU as well
  9. I applied to 9, was accepted at 7, waitlisted at 1, rejected at 1. Obviously had I known I would've been accepted at certain schools I wouldn't have applied to my safeties (three of them were definitely safeties for me) but I wouldn't have done it any other way.

    NYU!

I'm meeting with some people in my department at NYU tomorrow so I'll hopefully be making a decision veeeery soon
  11. Did they have a priority deadline/did you apply by it? I don't even remember if they did or not, haha.
  12. Did you apply to the MA in LAS at Georgetown? Because I got an email from them about two weeks ago and the official letter in the mail on Wednesday.
  13. They offered funding (of varying levels) to the top 10 applicants they admitted, and information was sent in the official acceptance packages.

    New York, NY

I was accepted to NYU with a monthly stipend of about $2600. I'll be looking at getting a part-time job/TAship/assistantship on top of that, so hopefully there would be a little extra income, but let's just assume there won't be. Would living in Manhattan be doable on this? I'll be looking at renting a room from someone, not getting a whole place to myself.
  15. I don't really have much advice at all except to say that I'm going to be deciding between LAS programs pretty soon here too and have my heart stretched out between three schools, including NYU as one, haha
  16. One of my schools that offered funding also asked me for an answer, and I told them the truth - that university B offered me full funding and a generous stipend, and university C has told me they will offer funding but haven't yet told me how much, and I want to make sure I have all of my information as well as have a chance to visit university B before I choose.
  17. Mine will be handwritten, not emailed, but I plan on listing all of the schools that accepted me and what funding/fellowships/etc each one offered. They know where I applied, and since I got into 7/9 of them (and really, I was waitlisted at one of the others, which I will also tell them) it would sound weird being like "oh, and BC said no." haha
  18. It really can vary - I applied to an interdisciplinary social science MA, and was offered funding from several schools, including full tuition + 24k/year in stipend (but in NYC, that doesn't go as far as it sounds like it would! haha).
  19. Update: the DGS wrote back within about 15 minutes and we've set up a time to meet tomorrow Thanks!!
  20. Thanks guys I emailed the DGS but either way, I'll be going over just to wander around campus (after falling in love with the school for undergrad and being rejected, it's going to feel awesome to walk around again knowing that this time they want me! haha) and hopefully will hear from someone about stopping by!
  21. In for Latin American Studies, but will be declining so hopefully someone else will get in
  22. I was accepted into what is basically my dream school, with no word of funding yet (which would be a dealbreaker). As it turns out, I'll be in the city (and actually staying very close!) where the school is tomorrow morning for work. Would it be weird to just drop in on the department and be like "hey guys, you admitted me, I have a few questions" or would that be okay? I would have notified them earlier if I had the chance but I didn't know! Thanks
  23. When I hear back from all my schools (one more left!) and then make my final decision (so... April 14th, probably, haha) I'm going to write each one a handwritten thank you note letting them know where I was accepted, who offered funding, and where I chose to go and why. And probably a token gift as well - small coffee place gift card or something like that

    NYU!

It looks like I'm deciding between NYU and another school now, as they were my two best-funded offers - now I'm just trying to figure out if a 24k a year stipend in NYC is really that much better of an offer than UCSD, taking cost of living into account
