Honestly, for me (and I know you're applying for the same types of programs), I had made up my mind before even applying that if I couldn't find funding to at least cover tuition (and then maybe look at on-campus employment to cover housing and such, maaaaybe taking out a loan to help cover those) that I wouldn't attend. I was lucky enough to get a couple of funded offers but I would have had a terrible time justifying paying for it!

Looks like some more results are starting to pop up on the results board - how's it going for everyone? It's going way differently for me than I expected so I'm curious about all of you guys! -
Can't hurt to call and ask. The worst you can get is a no!

Reviewed for assistantship but no admission decision?
lasgirl replied to beelz's topic in Waiting it Out
"I received an email stating I was being reviewed for an assistantship and was wondering if that indicates a decision has been made on my application." -
What do you think about the ones on campus (single grad student housing and the rita atkinson residences)?
-
I'm about 99% sure I'll be attending - anyone else? Any information about grad student housing (reviews, rumors, best/worst)?

post here if one of your programs has started contacting...

Someone was accepted to my top choice program on a Friday, and I assumed that meant I was most likely rejected - but on Monday, the program director called me and offered me full funding, so never say never -
Hello! I was accepted to my top choice school (eek!) and have a question about responding to the program. I don't plan on officially accepting until I hear back from all of my programs, but I do want to get in touch with the school. How do I even start this email!? haha Something along the lines of "thank you so much for this opportunity. Before making my decision, I'd like to ask a few questions." or something completely different? I was offered a RA with full tuition/fees and a small stipend. Would it be appropriate to ask about additional funding opportunities (readerships, possibly a TAship) to cover my room and board costs? What would be the best way to approach this? Thanks

I'm not, simply because I'm currently in training for a job that I will be quitting in September to start school, so there's no reason to have any issues with that. I finish training this week, though, and I'll probably post something when I officially decide where I'm going (though it's already 99% sure, since I got into my top choice with full funding, buuuuut you never know what the other schools might come up with haha).

I'm about to finish training and will be working as a flight attendant until classes start!! I'm super excited, especially since it's a very international airline and I'll get to visit lots of places I haven't seen (and some I already have!), so it's a very good use of my time until then Now that I have acceptances, too, I don't have to stress about "what if I get stuck in this job foreeeeeeever?!" and can just enjoy it

I was offered a Graduate Student Research Assistant position at my top choice university, which will pay full tuition and fees in addition to a very modest monthly stipend. It's a 25% employment position (10 hours a week), and from what I can tell, the university allows grad students to work up to 50% employment. While TAships are 50% and therefore unavailable to me, readerships are generally 25%. Would I be able to use the readership payment (which usually covers a portion of tuition/fees as well) to help pay for my room and board? Of course I'll be contacting the university directly, but just curious what other people may have done!

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?

I'm in training for a new job (that I will be quitting to start grad school!) and had basically given up on my top choice, since they said they would send out information the first week of February and this was yesterday, Valentine's Day. I checked my phone and saw a missed call and a voicemail from a number I didn't recognize, but realized it was from the same city as this school. I ran out of training and checked my voicemail, which was from the program director asking me to call him back to discuss the status of my application. I did, and not only did I get in (which I wasn't even expecting as this was a reach school) BUT I got funding/a stipend and a travel grant for the summer in between my academic years! I immediately called my dad after, started crying while I was talking to him, pulled myself together and went back in for my last hour of training, then called my best friend and started crying again, hahaha -

Not sure where else to put this, but just got my first acceptance at UCSD with a graduate student research assistant position offered, providing full tuition and a modest stipend, plus a travel grant for research abroad summer 2012! So while it may seem impossible, there really IS some funding offered for LAS MA students, as rare as it may seem -
And at the very least, have every single privacy setting on that's available. You can't search for my name/email on facebook, nothing can be seen if you're not my friend, and even my friends can't see my pictures

I was lucky enough to study abroad four times during undergraduate, I've taught English abroad, have a professional-level scuba diving certification, and went to the World Cup last summer

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application
lasgirl replied to DeWinter's topic in Waiting it Out
I hope so! I'm already going crazy waiting to hear back - I can't imagine stressing myself out even more by going through all of the ways I could be totally humiliated in the decision process as well! haha -

Although apparently you're not supposed to sound optimistic about your applications, I think my committees will seriously consider me at all of the schools I applied to. I don't necessarily think I'll be accepted at all of them - of course, some of my schools were "reaches" - but if I really didn't think they'd even give my application a second glance, I wouldn't have applied. Everything in my application is solid. Parts are what I would consider stellar, parts aren't, but I don't have anything to apologize for. It makes me kind of sad to see how everyone is so convinced they'll just be laughed out of the room -
$685 in application fees $40 in GRE prep books $160 + $138 in GRE fees $81 in transcripts = $1104 at least - not taking into account several school visits and things like that!

Just last Thursday and Friday, so when I get them into the mail tomorrow they'll be there within a week of my visit Thanks!

I recently visited a program that, due in large part to this visit, has become my number one choice of school. It was an informal visit (not an interview), though I was able to meet with a professor in the department, the program director, and the student affairs officer while I was there. The program deadline is January 14th, my application was submitted before I visited, and I was told that we would be hearing by the beginning of February, as the AdCom meets at the end of January. I presume it won't be taken as brown-nosing to write handwritten thank-you notes to those I met with, correct? I write thank you notes for everything and so it would feel wrong to not write them for this! I will be writing to the professor for sure, but should I write one to both the director and the student affairs officer, just to the director, or to the department as a whole (and mention both of their names specifically)?

I'm currently applying to LAS programs right now, so hopefully I'll have some ideas or answers soon
