  1. Tuition waived at both for the first two years. I'm actually leaning more towards Hopkins now. I think the international name recognition might be worth living in poverty until I get some dissertation grant money. Also, the program looks a lot more rigorous. With those federal traineeships do you have to do RA work or something along those lines to earn the funding? Also, final score for me is in at 4 out, out at 1.
  2. ok, I need advice! Hopkins (10k for two years, not including insurance) or Chapel Hill (14k for two years, includes insurance). This is for health policy and management. I have great advisors at both, both are great schools. I've thought about this a lot, I just want to make sure there isn't some factor I'm missing here. I feel like I might be leaning towards UNC because I'd have more freedom with my research there and cause it's not in Baltimore. :/
  3. U street has it's own metro stop. Try the maps at WMATA.com as well. Eastern Market has sort of blossomed over the past few years. There is still some crime, but there are also a lot of young homeowners there who take pride in their community. I imagine that some streets around there are better than others. Aside from the cap hill/EM area which is safer due the presence of Capitol police, I would stay clear of SE. There are ample developing and sort of dangerous areas in NW and especially NE that are at least slightly less dangerous. Although, don't move to the Trinidad neighborhood in NE. Crime was so bad there a bit back that they started setting up police checks to get in and out of that part of town!
  4. Results from American came out a few weeks ago. At least I got my acceptance and $ maybe 3 weeks ago?
  5. FSIA, did you hear back on that JHU fellowship yet? I was hoping to hear before they all went on spring break this last week, but nothing... Maybe this week? I'm hoping to hear before I go visit at least!
  6. Technically you need a masters to start the program at UNC (it's in their PhD handbook), so you might want to inquire about how strict they are about that.
  7. All three schools have very strong alumni networks. Obviously if you go to a school that isn't ranked you'll have an issue, but among the DC schools they are al on par with one another. I've been working and interning in the DC area for a decade now and have worked with people who attended all 3 of the schools. No one school is regarded as better in regards to the MPP program. The only reason Georgetown might have more name recognition is that their undergraduate program is much stronger. That said, the programs have different strengths and you should pick the one that best suits your field of interest within policy. Also just sharing information. No need to get all defensive.
  8. GW is ranked the same as Gtown. No one in DC actually cares if you go to Gtown over GW or AU.
  9. I also have "the fear" of Baltimore I have to say. I live in DC and already that can be really bad at times in terms of crime and feeling intimidated walking down the street. I know some people who bought a house in a developing area of Baltimore (don't know which off the top of my head) only to have their house broken into twice and to realize that there is an open air drug market outside their house during the day. I'm also really tempted by Hopkins (assuming I get money) but living someplace safer (I hate having to be on edge all the time) is also tempting.
  10. Maybe there is some element of cultural differences to this. The only students who ever blatantly asked to cheat off of me (and no, I never agreed) were international students. Maybe that is more acceptable in universities abroad? Not that that's an excuse, but perhaps an explanation.
  11. I'll be taking summer classes and working. whooo! haha
  12. I wouldn't feel bad about it. That's their issue not yours! Just make sure you make a good decision!
  13. AU has one of the highest PMF rates from what I understand.
  14. good idea with the polyvore! This is what I am thinking at the moment
  15. Thanks for the heads up FSIA. My advisor is actually not even going to be the country at the open house, but we'll be speaking over the phone which is good too! Yeah I mean if I don't get funding I'm pretty sure I can't justify JHU, but I hope I do since I'm getting increasingly excited about their particular program. Visiting three schools between now and the 15th though, so hopefully that will help clarify.
  16. Did you hear back on the JHU fellowship yet? I'm still waiting for money. I haven't gotten my official packet in the mail yet (just a letter) so I'm thinking maybe news will come with that.
  17. I know there are some other posts about this that might helpful if you do a search. One about housing and one about condos I think. I know cause I started the condo one. Still no closer to figuring out if I can make this work though!

How difficult would it be to bike from Mt. Vernon to JHU medical campus? I'm just trying to figure out where I would want to live since I don't have a car. I know there is a free shuttle to the medical campus. Am I right in thinking it goes from Homewood with a stop in Mt Vernon and then on? Are there any other stops along the way?
  19. I interviewed for a program last time I did this and was waitlisted. I think to some extent it boiled down to not being a good fit, plus me just not being ready. In retrospect the questions I'm asking now are much better than the ones I asked then. I also got rejected from the one school that required an interview this time around too, although I did meet with faculty informally at the other schools I got into. I think I just don't always express myself well under pressure. I do much better in informal situations or in writing. You might want to do some practice interviews if you do this again next year.
  20. I am feeling increasingly bad about having to say no to some of my potential advisors. They are all being super nice and saying they are looking forwards to studying with me. I know this is all the usual stuff, but it will be so hard to choose and it's even harder when I feel like I am letting people down!
  21. If people leave for summers what do they usually do with their apartments? Just keep paying rent? sublease them? put everything in storage and find a new one come fall?
  22. Silver Spring is nice, but not cheap now anymore. Also as you get further away from downtown it gets a bit sketchier in certain areas. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific neighborhoods in mind since I've lived for too long and know most of them. I would suggest living downtown actually as long as you are on the green line of the metro. Columbia Heights might be a good area to think about.
  23. I'm totally anxious about the recruitment day visits now. I always get sort of nervous when I feel like I can't make a quick retreat for a moment alone if needed, and all of these dinners with faculty and being in cities I'm not familiar with is totally giving me anxiety. I mean it will be fine, I will take a deep breath and suck it up but at the moment I feel all kinds of nervous! I'm also really anxious about trying to decide. I know I will feel guilty about saying no to certain schools!
  24. Nope no news on money yet. I sent an email last week asking and was told they are still working on it. I hope you get the fellowship!
