  1. My sister is living in oakland and attending SFAI. She is only 3 or 4 blocks from BART(public transit train). Oakland is less expensive to live in and only about 20 min of travel to SF. On the weekends there are events to talk too from her apartment like a flee market. Its less dynamic than living in SF. It was much less expensive than living in the ugly area of SF she lived in her first year there. I cant remember how much she is paying now but she has a two bedroom with another AI student. I 'think' she was paying 1300 for a single and now she is paying around 1400(together with her roommate) for a two bedroom.
  2. Well this is sad. "The cost for tuition and general fee for full-time masters degree students in the School of Design for the academic year 2010–2011 (Fall and Spring semesters) is $40,056: of this, $2,153 is a general fee." I have to claim some ignorance here, I thought Penn was a state school. Turns out its Ivy league? I wish I had some more direction when applying. I will be visiting the school but that amount of debt is scary without funding.
  3. Wow, I really love how they structured your program! I like all of the freedom to work. UNLV is similar in how it is stretched out over 3 years. On the flip side, I have been steadily working on my own with little structure or discussion about my work with other artists. Two years of intense discussion/study with peers and professors may be more of what I need. Who knows? I have to eagerly wait for those letters about funding to roll in!

When I was accepted at Rutgers I deferred acceptance because they were offering no funding what-so-ever. On top of that I would have to pay out of state tuition. At that price i might as well go to a private school. They sounded like they would reconsider offering me funding this year. It may be worth it or it may depend on the school.
  5. Atumble, I totally understand the 'burn out'. I went through that my first year after graduating from undergrad but under different circumstances. Working Full time, directing photography for a magazine, my own small business, personal work all adding up to a minimum of 80 hours a week! I had to stop it all and restart, pay off undergrad and now focus on my own personal work. Learned my lesson and so I feel better prepared for Grad School. I have not received any financial news yet Penn said I should have a letter within the next week, similar to UNLV. Rutgers said mid april. Penn is my top pick for now but its really going to take a visit to these schools to decide. Like littlenova i will be doing some traveling for some of my work and coming back to North Dakota. I am excited to bring work I am doing in ND to Philly for critique. Ive got another question for you folks. How are these critiques going to start? With work completed recently? Will we be able to bring in work we had been working on throughout the summer for instance? I have quite a bit of work lined up(portraits/documentary) for July and August and by the time I get them developed it would be September. I guess that may be a good question to ask on my tour next month!
  6. Well, in about two weeks I'm going to start visiting campuses (Rutgers in NJ, UNLV and U of Penn). I was wondering if anyone else was moving to a drastically different location from where their current work has been based. The town I have been living in for the last year and a half has 18,000 people(Dickinson, ND), hour and a half from a starbucks, 9 hours from a art museum and zero art community. I'm not worried and have projects planned to work through in school. Anyone have advice on how to prepare for such a drastic switch? I have done a lot of traveling and am very excited for the change! I feel pressure to get to work instantly when I arrive at school and yet I will be totally unfamiliar with the surrounding area. I would like to be able to move a few months before the program would start but I dont think I will be financially prepared until August.

Ive had to answer all of these questions for myself over the last two years. I applied to a couple private schools last year and decided I will only go where the funding is. When I get out of school I think it would be great to teach and if I dont - I will work. Grind out as much of my own work as possible and try to show like crazy. or at least that is what I dream of doing. What I dont dream of doing is moving back to a Po-dunk town where the rent is cheap and there is NO art scene to speak of just so I can afford the loan payments. I also applied to schools that were 'relatively' less expensive to live so that most of the money I make as a TA can go back into my projects with less reliance on loans. What do you want to be free to do after you graduate? Do you have money saved up for after you graduate to offer some buffer from the debt? I wont. Does this school offer career opportunities that out weigh the cost of attendance? If you dont get any funding would you be able to reapply for funding after differing your acceptance for a year? I did that with Rutgers. I sent in my portfolio and resume again in hopes that they will now offer me funding/TA. If they don't - I'm declining their offer.
  8. Dear Mr. Cote: Welcome to the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania! It is my pleasure to confirm that you have been admitted to our 2 year Master of Fine Arts program, beginning in September 2010. Online letters have been sent for Photo. That puts my list at: Accepted: Penn and U of Nevada Las Vegas Rej: WashU
  9. It seems like most posters are giving you great references. Researching writers, artists and technique. That is typically post grad work in my experience. When I was in undergrad i had little time to read anything that wasn't solely for class study. I learned more in my first year out of school than my 5.5 years in school. My GPA was 2.8 and I did not go on for my BFA. I didn't really go to class my first two years and was not an art major(I also attended 3 different schools) and it doesnt matter. When I was asked in an interview why my GPA was so low i just stated although my work ethic wasnt very well developed (Lazy until my junior year). The board stated that they didnt understand why it was so low because from their perspective it was A quality work. I was accepted a day after the interview. Its about the work and the experience I gained after school(graduated 3 years ago). Im not sure if anyone else mentioned Cindy Sherman. She is a photographer but another artist dealing with womens issues and identity. Gerhard Richter's early work from photographs was brilliant! He was dealing with completely different issues than you are but you would be able to learn from his work. The lighting, composition, depth of field and other components in your paintings reflect photography. -- thats from a photographers perspective anyway. One other note: There really is nothing negative to say about your work. Schools and MFAs don't make artists. Maybe after some development, your going to have an even harder decision, which school to choose from. Posting this was a great idea, as you may need some fresh eyes to see your work and give you critical feedback.
  10. I visited PNCA. I liked the campus and portland is wonderful. The program wasn't for me. It was too liberal in its structure, meaning I wanted to be surrounded by more photographers and less interdisciplinary artists. The program stresses interdisciplinary work or at least that is what i got from it. The studios are pretty nice and ample facilities for most concentrations. I visited last year and it was going to be their first year offering a MFA. The head of the department was really open, honest and experienced. Her work was also really great! I just cant recall her name. If you have any other questions(I did get a tour and had a friend who attended the school) PM me.
  11. is impatiently waiting!

  12. @brianmc After reading that post I feel like we all need to go out for a drink... or two! I too had a very hard last year as an undergrad. I got a C- in the first half of my senior photo year followed by a B- the next semester(which i had to explain in my interview with UNLV). My professors didnt quite get what i was doing and I barely did but the images were very successful in a technical and conceptual sense. That being so I dont care how the school that I will attend is ranked. Some day its going to be a foot note just above my repeat solo shows at the MOMA in NY on my CV. Gotta Dream. Like you I want critical eyes and minds viewing my work with encouraging words to help it all grow into a more developed body of work.
  13. Figured it how...now how to i delete a topic?
  14. Upenn: Dear Nathan, We are currently evaluating applications and will be making decisions in the next few weeks. On March 22 after 12 noon EST, you can log back into your online application and view your notification letter. In the meantime, if you are applying for financial aid, be sure to submit your FAFSA or Penn International Financial Aid Application if you haven't done so already.
