  1. Turn the phone off? I can't think of much that would look more unprofessional than to have my phone go off during an interview, campus tour, class, etc when thier impression of me is so crucial. Other schools will certainly leave a message and you can excuse yourself to call back during a break or wait until the next day. I guess it's a good problem to have, but no one actually expects you to be at beck and call 100% of the time.
  2. I was accepted to UF today, granted it's masters not PhD, but they are for sure working through thier list and letting people know. Best wishes!
  3. It really depends on the situation. I too did two internships, at one I didnt learn much, I was mostly there to photocopy (although, I now am a kickbutt photocopier). At the other I had an amazing experience in my feild of Media in a once of a lifetime environment. There ARE internships that are worth your time and are career making experiences but they are few and far between and are hard to find. Internships, depending on your feild and I'm sure PR is one of them can be hard to find (good ones anyway) too. Many it is a requirement that you be IN SCHOOL and you are receiving CREDIT for the internship. With the job market the way it is, there is value in interning while you make the long look. I had an intern supervisor tell me something very smart, when you find a good paying job, the people you intern for should not be upset if you leave them to take it. They know you need to live, to make money, especially if you had been working for them for free. If they do get upset, they didn't have your best interest in mind and you don't want to work for that anyways.
  4. ...I didn't know that even existed....

  6. Although they may not care, others will not think higher of you because you do not take effort in your dress. Conversly, dressing professionally holds the opposite. If there is a chance someone you want to have a favorable view of you will be around, whether you see them everyday or once in a lifetime, dress with thought, at the Library cramming? Maybe not so much.
  7. It does sound like 6 years of funding, however, I suggest calling the dept or the finaid office and clarifying. It very well could be 4 years of funding (2 fellowship and TA/2 TA). From my research many schools do TA in conunction with a TAship. As far as whether you'll have to take out loans that really depends on your style of living and where you will be living. If you can live very fugally you might now have to take out loans. You can probably scour the school's website (or call finaid office) and find out how much a TA makes, figure out your monthly pay, take out 1/4 for taxes and have a good idea of how much money you'd have to work with. All that said, it does sound like a pretty good deal, no harm in asking the school a few questions...after all, you were accepted to be thier student! Congrats!
  8. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think it's a big deal. Asking someone to repeat themselves show that you are interested in what the other person is saying and want to make sure you are understanding what the other person is saying or that you are overloaded with information and need clairification. Maybe I'm crazy, but when people ask me to repeat myself I take it as a sign they are fully interested in the conversation.
  9. I don't want either team to win. Instead, I'm rooting for my team Blue Moon, Shock Top and Linney's.
  10. ME TOO! I've unsubscribed to everything. I'm not sure which influenced it more, being sad it wasn't grad school stuff or mad that it's all Valentine's day stuff. Ugggghhhhh.
  11. Your signature says you applied to UNC, UMiami and Mizzou...so YES. Okay, sure you can get away with not liking football, but those three schools in particular are Football heavy. And when you get here you'll find there is much to love! Screaming fans, cute boys in uniforms, alcohol....it's what we call the "college experience". Okay, yeah, study, get good grades, but sports are a great way to pass the time and as a student at most schools going to college sporting events is FREE!
  12. I can't help but laugh at the people who picked Dallas as the site this year....you know when they did they said "at least it'll be warm!" They've had to spend the whole week in freezing temps outside the stadium. When will they learn? Always pick Florida or Hawaii.
  13. The smoke free campus comment made above is a great point. You don't want to break any rules before you even get accepted! A little google search (seriously, what did people do before google) turned up this doc of smoke free campuses. http://www.no-smoke.org/pdf/smokefreecollegesuniversities.pdf That said, I did my undergrad in Chicago and a huge chunk of the student pop. smoked. Now I live in Florida and it's really weird to see people smoke, so I think it depends on the atmosphere....maybe the most unuseful ahead of time advice ever.
  14. It is officially Friday. And so it is now officially superbowl weekend, ah blessed distractions. In your most academically convincing ways, list reasons team x or team y will win the superbowl or off the wall interesting things you hope happen on Sunday football, party, commercial, fan etc related.
  15. Depends on the school and the sport, but you WILL be able to find activities that you do not have to try out for....if not at the university at the community level.
  16. If you need to give a new phone number certainly call them, the graduate coordinator pr secretary for your department is the right person to help direct you with what to do and who to contact. In addition he or she will be able to personally update your file with whatever information needs to be changed. That said, we are all glad to hear that you are safe! What a crazy and scary situation has evolved. Best wishes with the remainder of the program, hopefully whatever is best for the students, the program and the people of Egypt will unfold.
  17. How obnoxious of this school and what a stinky circumstance for you. The email(s) are definetly ambiguous, hopefully they actually will get back to you with more info, but if they don't I'd lean on the side that you'll be highly considered for acceptance next year if you choose to leave your application on file. I say that because it is a specific superviosor you want to work with and they will certainly be looking at all applications sent in 2011 for 2012 as well. I'd imagine you'd be a high candidate since it sounds like you were top choice this year, but hopefully that means you were a top candidate at other schools as well and better news is coming your way...and news that isn't so confusing!
  18. For me personally, I'm into gender roles in media and new and digital media development and policy (I know, could I be anymore all over the map?) And I did my undergrad in film so I'm into film theory. Anybody who is into film policy the doc "This Film is Not Rated" is a must.
  19. Truth is we can all hemm and haww all day about what ifs and shoulda, couldas. Really, you'll never know until you try. It seems you should apply to a variety of programs and see where the chips fall. You could make it into Columbia, stranger things have happened, none of us knows what makes an ideal candidate since applications aren't run through a stats program, they are reviewed by people, who may have had thier kid throw up on them before they left for work or who could be feeling particulalry generous on the day they read your app. You nor us will know until you try. I would say, however, expand your search outside of NYU and Columbia if Grad school is something you really want, if it isn't Grad School that is drawing you, but instead the idea of NYC/Boston, then nothing is stoping you from just moving there and starting a career. With your experience with other papers, you might also consider DC as a good jumping off point as well.
  20. As much as I'm enjoying wasting my time watching Teen Mom and Pretty Little Liars (judge all you want) I need to find something more productive to do to. What are your favorite comm books, journals, documentaries (or narrative films for that matter)?
  21. It sounds like the issue will be expunged before you're apps are complete? If not there are schools that will over look it if they ask about it at all. If you do come accross questions about it on the application, talk to someone in Graduate admissions (not your department) about your situation to make sure you anwser the questions as accuretly as possible. If you do not mention it and it is asked about and they judge it belonged in that section school can revoke your acceptances. That said, I really do not believe something that small will hurt your chances.
  22. Your SO and newms are right!
  23. Ha ha, sorry, sometimes it's hard to tell from text. I'm in Florida where it is currently 63 degrees and mostly sunny. Before you get too jealous, rest assured the process on this side of the country isn't going any faster!
  24. Unfortunately the snowpocolypse will only slow things down. Adcoms aren't going to risk crashing or getting stuck in the snow for our account!
